Default A Look Back.....2005 Draft

Round 1
Aaron Rodgers A-

Picked essentially over value, Rodgers struggled in the preseason and the little playing time he had in his first 2 seasons, but showed promise in 2007. He most certainly will be the starting QB in Green Bay once Lord Favre retires.

Round 2
Nick Collins-C+
Terrence Murphy --

Collins has been solid. Nothing too flashy, doesn't seem to make a lot of mistakes but doesn't seem to make a lot of plays either. His job could be in jeopardy. Luckily for him, he's still young.

I can't really give Murphy a grade. He had good potential and what little we saw of him, but then he had that neck injury. Greg Jennings would not be on our team had Murphy stayed healthy.

Round 4
Marviel Underwood-C-
Brady Poppinga-B+

At the time safety was a huge need for us. I can't blame Thompson for picking Underwood. Unfortunately he never did too much for us, mostly with injuries to blame.

Poppinga has been a solid starter for 2 seasons now. He's not going to wow anyone with his playmaking ability, but he's a high energy guy who leaves it all on the field

Round 5
Junius Coston-C+
Mike Hawkins-D-

He has the potential and skillset to succeed in our scheme but it just hasn't happened yet. Like Collins, he's still really young and has time.

Hawkins was bad and never panned out. He was a huge project and I consider this pick a reach even in the 5th round.

Round 6
Mike Montgomery-B
Craig Bragg-D

I really like Montgomery, he just hasn't had the durability or the PT to shine. He was explosive at times this past year when he had his snaps. He's a good player for us, and fits right into our DE rotation.

Craig Bragg was blazing fast, but that's about it. On and off the practice squad for the first few months(If I'm remembering right) into the 2005 season then cut.

Round 7
Kurt Campbell-D
Will Whitticker-F

I don't remember too much about Campbell, except that he was a LB/S tweener and injuries followed him around in GB

Will Whitticker....ugh

Well this draft has given us 2 solid starters, promising QB in the wings, and a potential starter down the road in Montgomery.

Draft Grade: Solid B

Never done one of these before, don't flame too much on me.

I remember the Mike Hawkins pick and I thought it was a good potential pick at the time, burst onto the scene as a freshman at OU, and he ran a 4.2 40 along with being the top rated db in texas his senior year...Problem was he has a crappy work ethic, he never put in the extra time in the weightroom to get bigger and stronger so he got hurt every time he had to come up and make a play...Has all the physical tools in the world and was dominant at every level he played at, but this is the reason those potential picks end up boom or bust, he's still jumping around on teams in the league but he would of been a 1st rd pick if he stayed at Oklahoma, so it was worth it in the 5th to take a flier on him.

If you look at some of his accolades up to the point he was drafted, it looked like you were getting a diamond in the rough at the time.

But if Murphy had stayed healthy, maybe the Packers wouldn't have needed Jennings and they could have used the pick on someone else they could have used.

I'm grading on how the picks have turned out, IMO. You can grade on the pick and decision at the time, but I think when you look down the road, you get to use that hindsight and apply the production to the player.

Round 1

Aaron Rodgers C+

Good value, but he's had serious minutes in 1 game, and it was still a loss. He's not been durable, though I think he can be as good or better than Drew Brees and play that style of ball.

Round 2
Nick Collins: B+
Terrence Murphy: F. (With a forgiving grade, it would be an I. But the bottom line is that NFL teams should be giving guys neck x-rays/MRI's to see if they have spinal stenosis, particularly your 2nd rounders. I loved Murphy as a pick, though. Murphy, Jennings and James Jones would be an amazing trio after DD leaves.)_

Collins has started since being selected. the only thing more you get from a guy to make the A grade, which Collins might be an A-, is to have them be pro-bowl.

Round 4
Marviel Underwood: D+ (I?)
Brady Poppinga: B

Marviel had a lot of potential, but the injury ruined him as much as Murphy's did. That's part of the game, though and the end result is that he's not in football anymore.

Poppinga is getting better, but we'd not brought Chillar in if B-Pop was getting it done on passing downs. Still, I'd like to see Brady rush the QB more and back killing people on special teams. This grade almost kicks Collins up to that A-...

Round 5
Junius Coston: B-
Mike Hawkins: D-

Juice is challenging for a starting spot and has just gotten better. At the beginning of the year, this looked like a C-, but he rose a full grade over the course of the season.

I had been so excited about Hawkins' potential. I didn't realize the lack of character and drive the guy had, though given his college Hx, the problems were there. In R5, a decent pick, but with his attitude in college, maybe should have been a UDFA.

Round 6
Mike Montgomery: C+
Craig Bragg: D-

I really like Montgomery, he just hasn't had the durability or the PT to shine. He was explosive at times this past year when he had his snaps. He's a good player for us, and fits right into our DE rotation. Slightly above average as he's still on the club and plays periodically. I think he'll get replaced this year unless he kicks it into high gear in the off-season.

Craig Bragg was a player I really liked. He just didn't have the physique to take on NFL CBs though. I expected so much more from a guy who was this good at UCLA, their career receptions record holder and had unofficial times better than sub 4.3. Production, D- as he didn't make it through one TC onto the active roster, pick at the time for me was an A.

Round 7
Kurt Campbell: D (I?)
Will Whitticker: C

Kurt Campbell also a physical freak, more athletic than that Stanford LB, Jon Alston. A pity he never worked out. R7 keeps him from being graded lower.

Whitticker gets a C for being R7, and then starting all those games, turnstile or not.

Draft Grade: C-. Might be a little harsh, but it is what is.
If I give the injuries Incompletes and bump Collins to an A-, it goes to a C+. Now this draft could be as good or better as any draft in the last ten years if Aaron Rodgers turns into the starting QB I think he can be.

I don't see how Rodgers is an A when he has not done anything to help our team yet. I think that your getting a little a head of yourself. Nick Collins a C+ is a little bit of a head scatcher he has been the a stater for three seasons now and a though he will probably never be a pro bowler he is a good player and plays very well within his skill set. Other than that good overall analysis

He actually put on 15 lbs of muscle from his rookie to sophomore seasons with the Packers. Problem was that he couldn't stay on the field, he was always knicked up.

Will Blackmon is probably in the same situation because he looks like he has alot of potential but he just can't stay healthy.

if the player drafted doesn't start currently or has never contributed to the team how is that not an F?

montgomery can't be more than a C @ best.

Collins and Poppinga are safe in the B range as they are decent starters, could get alot better.

Rodgers is an A for value/talent, but maybe a C+ right now as he is still an unknown, but starting.... so twist my arm B

Coston C
Witticker D...+

the rest are Fs. solid Fs at that.

so if we were to avg out those grades (-) and (+) subtract .5 or add .5 to the numerical grade equivalent and you get...drumroll......

F's being 1 and A's being 5 the draft grade is 2.22

almost a D..wow!

I'm not hating, I love my packers. but lets get real. There isn't a draft that would score high if scored fairly. I cheated in my own system by bumping Rodgers up to a B instead of a C. anyway, my .02.

I do remember when he gained the extra muscle, but he just wasn't committed to improving himself to be a better player...He was more interested in being satisfied with the contract he had, staying in the clubs and going off his god given abilities...He had all the tools to be a star, excellent size, and he dominated at every level he played at previously...Lack of talent isn't the reason he didn't suceed, I went to high school with him and even then he had all the talent in the world but he just wasn't a hard worker(think Boobie Miles from Friday Night Lights)...Out of high school he had D-1 schools as Tennessee recruiting him to play WR if it gives you any idea of where his athleticism was it but he didn't take to coaching or authority well because thats how he got kicked off Oklahoma after his freshman year.

At that point in the draft you start to look at guys with high measurables like him, but I really thought he would pan out because he had already lost one opportunity at OU because he was looking like a future 1st rd pick...Currently he has been offered by the Dallas Desperados but he is trying to earn a spot with a few teams on some sort of minimum contract.
