Default BlindSite's Week 4 Sunday Wrap Up

Foreword:
Though I endeavor to include all top performances and as many great plays and players each and every week, time and space means that there will be a few I miss. This is no reflection on the team or me as a fan or writer, in some cases it’s just unlucky they're not included. Enjoy.

Break out Performer
Lance Moore of the New Orleans Saints has stepped up his game big time over the past few weeks. Catching 7 passes for 101 yards and 2 touchdowns on Sunday helped New Orleans get through what could’ve been a trap game to end their losing skid. The five-nine speedster has had two strong weeks in the absence of Marques Colston and it appears he’s just starting to establish his rapport with Drew Brees, a good sign for New Orleans fans.

Matt Schaub also deserves a mention here; Schaub has received a lot of criticism in recent weeks from prognosticators and amateur followers alike. The feeling being that his vastly losing record as a starter and lack of deep passing completions is going to hinder the Texans into the 08 season. Matt Schaub tossed 29 of 40 for 300+ yards and 3 touchdowns with a rating of 119.0, a great improvement over the past two games, against a strong defense. Though the Texans lost (again) this weekend, it certainly wasn’t through any lack of ability at the QB position.

Coaching Comments
Scott Linehan’s team started off well against the Bills but seemed to fall apart fairly quickly after the halftime break. Word on the associated press wire was that Linehan was to be fired after this week’s match up and while at this point in time that hasn’t yet occurred, it’s got to be expected soon. The question then becomes, who takes over? Jim Haslett may be the obvious choice as he wasn’t a terrible head coach in New Orleans and he obviously knows how to run a team, at least for the last thirteen weeks of an NFL season.

Dave Magazu, offensive line coach of the Carolina Panthers is a bit of a paradox. On one hand losing both tackles and still keeping two decent pass rushing defensive ends at bay is a testament to his ability to coach versatile backups. On the other hand the massive number of false start penalties is not something that can be tolerated for a team with playoff aspirations. False starts were the main contributor to the offensive issues last week against Minnesota and cost almost 80 yards this week against Atlanta. This has to change if Carolina is going to compete with the big dogs of the NFC for a playoff spot.

Jim Zorn seems to have found a way to get the Redskins to play well on both sides of the ball and for that he is to be commended. In the house of the NFL’s best unit he managed to prepare his team masterfully and his team executed what was clearly a well put together game plan. I wasn’t sold on Zorn at the beginning of the offseason when he was hired by the Redskins, but I am very much a convert now and very much on the Campbell bandwagon.

Poor Players
LaDanian Tomlinson, as well as he played, could’ve put his team in a big hole today with a costly fumble in his own end zone.

The pass rush and secondary of Arizona has to be asking itself serious questions after allowing 6 touchdowns. While I’ll acknowledge Kurt Warner losing the ball in one way or another seven times hurt their chances to catch their breath 6 touchdowns is still somewhat ridiculous.

A question was raised by Sports Illustrated this week about the defensive prowess of the Denver Broncos and it got me thinking last week about how long Jay Cutler could keep Denver rolling. My questions were answered this week with a big game by Kansas City’s offensive unit, highlighting that the Denver Broncos are seriously vulnerable on defense. In fact, according to Football Outsiders, they have the luckiest defensive unit the NFL and it was only a matter of time before an opposing team found a way to force Cutler into turnovers and exploit Denver’s defensive weakness. Kansas used a healthy dose of the running game and simple passing routes at the right time to pick apart and then run over the Denver defense. The small defensive line and small, but quick linebackers have to find a way to stop a power orientated running game or they’re in for a long year.

QB Watch
There was some big issues today for the NFL’s front runners. Kurt Warner as mentioned earlier had 4 fumbles and 3 INTs, though the 5 sacks allowed from the offensive line didn’t help. Jay Cutler Threw two picks and was a way off his completion rating from the last three games. Four QBs threw 3 INTs on Sunday.
Brett Favre had a story book day that is likely to have ESPN salivating. His streak of consecutive starts on the line Favre tore apart the Cardinals defense and had a career high 6 TD passes.

Jason Campbell isn’t likely to be on any major stat sheet headlines after his performance, which is a little unfair considering he put on what was probably the best performance of any QB playing this Sunday. Though at times it wasn’t exactly text-book, or pretty Campbell hung in the pocket and made great decisions while being harassed early and often and I couldn’t imagine any QB in the league performing better against the Cowboys than he did today.

Rookie Watch
Chris Horton had a big impact again this week against Dallas and leads all rookies in Interceptions with three. For a second day pick, he’s doing extremely well in the backup and situational role, the most notable attribute so far is his range, he showed some great awareness and excellent quickness closing on the ball and in my opinion, he’ll be a starter in the secondary before too long.

Eddie Royal is continuing to play great football for the Denver Broncos and they have to be happy with the investment of a second round pick.

DeSean Jackson immature or otherwise should never have lasted until the second round. Philadelphia don’t need to trade for a topflight receiver or someone else, they’ve found a great receiver in Jackson. Who on Sunday night managed over 100 all purpose yards. He is beginning to eclipse Chris Johnson as the front runner for Offensive Rookie of the year and appears to be doing so with ease.

Matt Forte isn’t a burner and he’s never going to have a LaDanian Tomlinson style highlight reel, but what he has given the Chicago Bears is the metronome of production on offense they’ve been missing now for a number of years. While Kyle Orton is playing smart and safe football and found Greg Olsen with a great pass in the first quarter, with Forte Chicago would be struggling.

Homer Corner
It was good to see Jake Delhomme have a nice performance against a hated rival. Though the Falcon’s aren’t exactly universe beaters, it was good to see Smith firing for 96 yards and a touchdown and Mushin Muhummad treat a cornerback falcons fans rate as their best on the depth chart like a government mule. This sort of tune up pitch and catch against an NFL team instead of the scout defense should help to build momentum and confidence which the team desperately needs.

The loss of both Otah and Gross hurts a lot, but having Wharton as a former left tackle gives the line some variations so long as one of the two tackles can play next Sunday the Panthers should look strong for their game against Kansas City.

Penalties are beginning to become a real issue for the Panthers, against Chicago, Minnesota and now Atlanta the Panthers have wasted over 300 yards in penalties. This has to change.

That pass defense was just ugly today. People just didnt feel like tackling and it seems as if everyone except for a couple players just didnt show up today. Turner, White, Ryan, Lofton, and Babineaux all gave solid performances throughout the game. I couldn't say that about everyone else.

I have to give a lot of props to the Panthers offensive line for doing a good job of containing Abraham and Babineaux despite injuries.

I however did like how we contained the running game of the Panthers. I thought for sure Stewart or DeAngelo Williams might wreak havoc on us, but nope. We are not nearly as bad a run defending team as the statistics show us out to be.

Just to toot the Bills' horn and add to your rookie watch, Leodis McKelvin had a good day today for us. Gave up a couple catches in his first game where he saw substantial playing time. He had some pretty long returns off kick offs as well and was hard to bring down and showed some power, unfortunately coughing the ball up while he carried a half dozen Rams on his back before collapsing. Luckily recovered by about five Bills players before a Ram got there though.

Highlight for McKelvin's day though had to of been knocking the **** out of Dane Looker and probably giving him a concussion on a wicked hit. McKelvin looked to be covering a deep zone and the safety didn't get to Looker and then McKelvin came flying in and completely dropped Looker, forced a fumble and then recovered it.

McKelvin is going to be a playmaker in this league once it all slows down for him. Unfortunately it came at the expense of Terrence McGee who was forced to leave the game with a sprained knee.

Yeah I was surprised at the team's running or its poor performance therein. If the line can stop giving away stupid penalties I think that will change.

Linehan fired.

As I geniusly predicted, Haslett is expected to be named interim HC.

That's what I love about being at college and not having the time currently to watch ESPN.
