Biggest FA that could be on the market?
Bill Parcells?
Quote:
Will Bill Parcells become a free agent -- again?
It's a possibility, hinging on whether Miami Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga's sale of his majority ownership of the team goes through, sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.
When Parcells joined the Dolphins as executive vice president of football operations last year, his deal included a one-time out clause that allowed him to walk away, with the rest of his $12 million guaranteed contract fully paid, no strings attached, if Huizenga sold the team.
Earlier this year, Huizenga agreed to sell 95 percent of the Dolphins to New York developer Stephen Ross. Huizenga hopes to close on the deal by early January to ensure that the capital gains taxes on the sale remain at 15 percent before President-elect Barack Obama takes the oath of office in January, Mortensen reported.
Parcells' contract specifically states only Huizenga can be in authority over him. Once Ross officially becomes majority owner, Parcells has to notify Ross within 30 days that he intends to exercise his walk-away clause and collect the full balance of $9 million, Mortensen reported.
At that time, Parcells would be a free agent. And any team that wants his services would not owe compensation to the Dolphins, according to the report.
Among the teams sources say are on Parcells' radar are the New York Jets, Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns and the Oakland Raiders. However, if Parcells' son-in-law, New England Patriots vice president Scott Pioli, is interested in any of those jobs, Parcells is unlikely to wind up with that team, Mortensen reported.
Parcells could negotiate with Ross to extend his opt-out clause by one year. But as presently written, the clause doesn't extend after one season, according to the report.

The article says he's interested in the Jets, Lions, Browns, or Raiders. Seems like anywhere this man goes, they tend to get on the right track. I think the team that should consider him of the bunch is the Browns. I could see him going to the Jets because of the history and the Lions for the project. What's the connecton to the Raiders?

Al Davis is missing his first Raider game since '79 this week. His medical problems seem to become more and more frequent.I'd love for the Tuna to come to the East Bay.

Parcells would have the Browns on track in no time, they don't even need a complete rebuilding job, they already have a great O-line and two young QB's, he's an expert at drafting personell for the 3-4 which is all they need anyway.

That I would like to see, but a bigger challenge would be for the Tuna to head to Detroit and fix the catastrophe that the Lions organization is

Asomugha's contract could dwarf anything seen by a DB.

I could see Bill with the Raiders. He'd do a fine job there, I think and maybe he has enough respect from Al Davis to actually run the team himself. Besides, he's dealt with a hands-on owner before in Jerry Jones.

I'll take someone with a system and a plan to help the entire team like Parcells if I needed it rather than an individual.

IMO Parcells should opt out and get his 9M Guarantee then work out a new contract with Ross to do the same damn job.

And it'll be worth every penny they give him....
That is really interesting about Parcells though. In a time where guys like Holmgren and Schotty are being floated as possible guys to take over teams the way Parcells took over the Dolphins, Parcells himself could be back on that list. Very interesting.
I still think if I had the option, I'd take Pioli to be my new guy and have him bring along McDaniels as coach. Love or hate the Pats, they know how to build winning football teams and instill that in their FO employees. Look at what Dimitroff did in one offseason with the Falcons.....

I do feel that if Al Davis was ever to hand over some sort of Director of Football Operations title to anyone who wasn't a lifetime Raider, it would be Parcells.
Then again, I'm not sure why he would leave Miami unless the new owner is that much of a hindrance. Certainly things have gone the right way there and Parcells has installed his people in the team's infrastructure. I would be surprised if he left that quickly.

Maybe he built it, saw it was going to win, and got bored with it.
I mean, once he put all the pieces together and saw that they're going to work, what more does he have to do? He doesn't seem like a 'sit back and take in the spoils' kind of guy.

The turnaround of the Dolphins was spectacular, but can Parcells really consider his job done already (unless the Fins win the Superbowl, of course)?

Perhaps not, but if the power is in the hands of the GM and the team is in the hands of the coach, then what can Parcells really do? He can overrule them and have them draft/sign different guys probably, but he put those pieces in place to their their jobs, not for him to do their jobs.
