Pretty much the same reasons WR's get more then OL the big guys do all the dirty work and the skilled guys get all the love and money.

Because there are more elite linebackers being paid top dollar and less elite DTs in the same vicinity.
None of this matters too much for the big price tag free agents who're likely to get slapped with a tag anyway.
The figure is either the above, or 120% of their previous year's earnings (whichever is higher).

I'm rather glad the Bears don't have anyone worth franchising.....that much of your cap number tied up in one player can be crippling if you still need other pieces.

Unless it's a quarterback, a franchise player only takes up about 6%-8% of a team's cap next year. Which really isn't that bad, especially considering all the cap space that most teams have this year.

Chiefs are in the same boat and I'm glad they have major cap room and not one player that I would call a must sign FS Jared Page is the closest but he is a RFA.
I look for them to give him a one year tender at either the highest level or close to it or even if they do lock him up long term he won't break the bank IMO.

if it includes 3-4 OLBs then the price would be more understandable

I cant believe how low the cap number is for running backs, i would of thought with the contracts given to rookie backs like peterson and mcfadden and the contracts tomlinson and larry jo have itd be alot higher...

It varies according to the amount of snaps played with hands up and down but usually 3-4 OLBs are under the LB tag.

I'm really surprised at the number for runningbacks. I imagined the LT's and AD's of the world made much more than that.

Depends on the player, thanks to the designated pay raises. If the '09 cap is going to be 123 million, guys like Julius Peppers (17 million franchise tag hit) would take up 14% of the Panthers overall cap and Nnamdi Asomugha (12 million franchise tag hit) would take up 10% of the Raiders cap.
That's pretty drastic.

Yeah, weren't they considering making a different category entirely for the 3-4 edge rushers after the issue with Suggs last year?

runningbacks aren't valued too high because their careers tend to be short. packmann's sig makes me sick as a packers fan

The Ravens and Suggs agreed on a midpoint last year. Teams will have to deal with it on an individual basis probably

I'm pretty sure about 5 or 6 years ago the Panthers franchised Todd Sauerbrun.

They have no real reason not to. They have plenty of cap space, despite all the rumors and headlines there's no real 100% certainty brady will be at 100% for the 09 season opener and realistically speaking you might as well trade him for a 5th round pick to get rid of him out of division than let him walk.
