No problem at all with naming Culpepper the starter. Makes drafting Stafford much more likely.. though there will be people that think this means we're going to wait until next year to take a QB.

Mike is a stand up guy, not really the disgruntled type to start rumors I do not think? My guess is by "other QB's" that were told Culpepper is the starter he was talking Dan (FA) & Jon (owed 500k bonus). Both strong Christians and both close friends with Mike who stay in contact in the off season and all live close to one another (Canton, Plymouth & Northville). Jon does not plan on coming back to the Lions (house is for sale already) he is pursuing ministry and spending time with family.

So were stuck with Daunte boys?!?!?!

since they haven't cut him yet i've pretty much been thinking that he'd be the guy. maybe linehan has some magic plays ready for culpepper.

Not the smartest move with Culpepper due 2.5 million bonus and 2.5 in salary, but as long as they take a QB number 1 it will not matter to me between Culpepper or Kitna on the roster. Culpepper knows Linehans offense the best although he is not worth 5 million dollars. We have the cap room for it but still. And Dan O might have wanted more than 5 million so Culpepper may be cheaper than him. So I guess thats why Mayhew/Schwartz/Linehan would want Culpepper. And as of right now he would be the starter until hopefully Stafford grasps enough of the playbook and can be protected enough to have a chance.

Cut/Trade Kitna!

Culpepper / Stafford / Stanton should be the 3 QB's for next year.. though I'd look to trade Stanton too.

Ha you'd get nothing for Stanton he has big bust written all over him. Which is sad because I liked Stanton coming out and thought it was a good pick...

Stanton is still an unknown IMO. He was injured for an entire year so this year was his rookie year essentially. He wasn't awful in the preseason either. The coaching staff hated him, but I hate this past coaching staff so whatever. Stanton did manage to throw a td pass in his limited action. However, if given the choice of Stafford or Stanton I'd take Stafford every time. Stanton most likely won't get an opportunity in Detroit. Wasted pick for sure, but bust we'll see. He's got a lot of work to do but he needs to have a chance.

Linehan/Culpepper/Johnson should be somewhat effective occasionally early next season. I'd be shocked if Detroit doesn't take Stafford or Sanchez in the the first round, but Culpepper is probably the right guy to be taking the reigns to start the 2009 season.

I hated the Stanton pick so much.

1- We passed on Puz.. who I didn't really like but would've been a better pick
2- We missed out on Justin Blalock, Chris Houston, and Tony Ugoh in the trade back
3- We picked Stanton ahead of LaMarr Woodley and David Harris. I also wanted Josh Wilson or Victor Abiamiri there..

I do think with a full training camp Culpepper will be a much better QB then last year. He still has a good deep ball. We messed up on his contract. No way anybody else would have gave him such a big option. He should be making around 1-1.5 million.

This isn't earth-shattering news by any stretch....exactly what I would expect. Draft Stafford, let him learn from the sidelines for the better part of the season if not the whole season and give him the reigns to the team for 2010. Daunte still has the ability to play some decent football.

The only thing that I hope is that having Daunte dosen't give the Lions brass a false sense of security and go OT #1 then wait and hope that Sanchez falls to them...

This probably is the right move for the Lions. I really want to see Stanton get a chance probably more than a lot of people.

Doubt it. Even if Pepper is back, he's only a stopgap. QB should be the pick if Stafford is deemed worthy.

The staff has already said they like Backus too.

The restructure just pushes Culpeppers bonus back so we can evaluate him more. There is a mini camp in April I believe.

Can an 0-16 team afford the luxury of a#1 overall pick and 30-40 million riding the pines? I say no way ... If you read how the Culpepper restructerd contract works, they can dump him at a much cheaper cost than before. If it is Stafford he must start.

Can an 0-16 allow a rookie QB who they invest 30-40 million in, to get killed next year by starting him? Stafford is NOT a must start for next year if he is drafted. If they draft him (I'm not 100% behind drafting him), they should do so with the intention of slowly grooming him to take over the team when he and the offense are ready.

How many rookies have been able to take over a BAD team in their first year and have CAREER SUCCESS? I can only think of Aikman and Manning in recent years. To me Ryan and Flacco don't count because they had good teams that didn't depend on them win games.

I look at guys like Couch and Carr who had potential, got rocked (especially Carr who got sacked 76 times in one year) and got their careers ruined. If a team was built around them first, they might have fared better.

Let a veteran (culpepper I suppose) steer the ship and move the rookie into place when ready.

It all depends on 2 things. Staffords ability to pick up the play book so he won't get killed and Staffords ability to read defenses and release the ball quickly. If the coaches deem he can do that and not hurt himself, then he could play right away. Success could happen at least offensiviely, defensivley we will still stink and thus lose a lot of games.

And as for Aikman, he went 1-15 and got killed his first year. Early playing time is beneficial for some, not beneficial for others. And as for Carr, he wasn't ruined because of his Oline. He just isn't as good as everyone though. He has the build, but mentally he couldn't grasp it. Coaches, Oline and Carrs fault.

If Stafford is draftrf, i expect him not to play for 2-4 games. As soon as Stafford gets the play book and has some chemistry with Calvin Johnson, i expect Stafford to start after the 3rd or 4th game of the season. Culpepper will be calling in plays from the sideline.

Watch how nice Stafford spiral is here:

Watch how nice Stafford spiral is here:

I really hope every QB in the draft has a tight spiral by this point, otherwise why bother. If Stafford is in by game 3... then I dunno. Maybe I'll put him in my prayers.

With regards to the original topic, Furbiscuit saying Culpepper has been given the starting job, I would take Jim Schwartz pretty close to his word when he says:

Quote:
"You guys keep on putting the cart before the horse. You're wanting to know if we promised the starting position to (Dante) Culpepper. From my standpoint it's like, jeez, could anything be a worse decision then promising a player that I've never seen practice, that I have no sort of relationship, promising somebody a starting position? We need guys to compete."

Its what I like to hear, and what you would expect from a coach in his first year with the team. Too many times, I've seen Lovey Smith handcuff himself to a QB and say things like "Rex is our guy," until Rex proves for the 80th time that he is not THE guy. I just hope if Schwartz lasts more than a few years here, he is as open minded about competition for the QB position in year 3 and 4 as he is in year 1.
