Because, let's say Detroit wants him. Well, they are obviously going to want to have a deal in place. If he doesn't want to sign there and refuses to do a deal, then they won't/can't trade for him.

Hopefully he goes to the 49ers or Dolphins.

Does any one think they don't trade him and let him play for that kinda money?

The smart thing would to do what we did with Corey last year. Sure they can do what Oakland did last year with Aso but then what happens the following year.

I'll put this here too.
I don't think the Panthers will get what most expect in a trade for Pep after franchising him.
1.Teams know the Panthers have to move him. They can't afford to keep him and he dosen't want to be there.
2. He says he'll only play in a 3-4, that narrows it down more.
3. he's going to command a monster contract, narrows down the teams further yet.

I don't think they can. They can't afford 17 mil on him now, especially after the Gross signing.

I wonder how much Peppers will command in trade value/contract. He could start on the decline, he is 29, but look how well Porter is doing in Miami. I don't know if I would give up a 1st round pick for him, maybe a 2nd and something else.
Now that I'm thinking about it, I think the Broncos should try to trade Dumervil and DJ Williams for Peppers.

DJ's value>>>Peppers' value. Dumervil would be a pass rush specialist, they need a full time DE.
Maybe 2nd, 4th, and Moss can get the deal done.

Why cant the Raiders have management like this? The Panthers did a great job on this.

I think the real question is whether Peppers decides to spite the Panthers and just take the 17 million. Perhaps it wouldn't even be spite. It's highly unlikely that whatever other contract he would get would get him first year money anywhere close to that.
This is a risky move by the Panthers. They're basically relying on Peppers wanting to leave more than he wants 17 million guaranteed dollars. Oakland tried something similar with Charles Woodson several years back and he just plowed ahead and signed the tender.

You are too good to leave. We don't want you to leave, or we don't want to pay you that much, BUT we don't want you going to rival, or we don't want to let you leave for free because we don't get anything. So we will franchise you. So now your stuck with us! So now a year goes by, your shelf life decreases one year, and we get to rent 1 more year's production from you. And if you get hurt, ah well, THEN we will let you go. So thanks for letting us screw you!
That's pretty much the franchise tag now.

No, they allow a team to avoid making a costly mistake, or like last year in the Panthers' case it allows a team to prevent a player from hitting free agency when both sides want to remain together but can't reach perfect terms with one another, it happened with Gross last year.

I highly doubt it, the team really wants to keep Peppers and part of me thinks that they'll trade him before copping a 17million dollar hit. Peppers wanting to go to Dallas hurts like a ***** because we don't need anyone they have and they don't have a first rounder.
LOL could you imagine TO going to the Panthers (not serious).
There's going to be a trade it just depends now on for what and with whom.

I doubt it.
There's only a few teams he "wants" to go to I'm thinking:
Dallas
Atlanta
Tampa
(Based on what was said in differen't places it sounds like there could be two teams he named in the NFC South).
and an AFC team:
Patriots, Jets, Miami (could all use some help at OLB)

Well that's why you have all the time to negotiate all this. For instance we tagged Jacobs, but we had all of last season AND all of this season to sign him long term. We only used the franchise tag TWICE in our history. Once for Jumbo Elliot OL back in the day, and now on Jacobs. So this for us was a shocker.
If a guy fits in your long term plans get it done, if he doesn't let him go. It's not a hard thing.

Look at the scenario I mentioned. Last year Jordan Gross wanted to sign a long term deal with the Panthers, the team had agreed on just about everything except for a few details pertaining to bonus money and other small clauses. It was a nice, pleasant negotiation, no animosity, it just didn't get finished. Just before he hit the open market, the Panthers tagged him, because obviously with the draft and other free agents around the Panthers wanted to focus on other areas, other than worrying about where their LT was about to end up.
Neither party was pissed off with the move and based on last year, it helped the team go 12-4. Not a bad thing at all, for either side.

well he has had no one in front of him to take off blockers from him yet he still produces. Peppers is getting older and he knows it and is going for his last big payday while DJ is much younger and is a great player in his own right.

So production to you means tackles, right? Cause that's obviously all you're looking at. I'm sure hitting someone at the line and making a tackle while getting dragged back 6 yards down the LOS is the same, because a tackle is awarded.
