Default Rookies Starting

I thought this would be a good topic with the draft coming up.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/story?id=09...s&confirm=true

"Farns are starting to get excited about who their favorite team will select in the draft -- and with good reason. The draft can have an immediate impact on a team's roster. Last year, the Kansas City Chiefs were in a full-blown youth movement and got a total of 70 starts from their rookies."

"That's money in the bank for new GM Scott Pioli. The Denver Broncos, under Mike Shanahan, were second in the league with 44 rookie starts, which is terrific for their new regime."

"The 2009 rookie class, much like last year's class, is not going to produce a lot of starts next season. It's OK if your team didnít have a lot of rookie starts and won games -- like the Pittsburgh Steelers, who had one rookie start all season (running back Rashard Mendenhall). But if your team didnít play its rookies and lost a lot of games, thatís a bad sign."

Hereís a look at the 2008 rookie starts for every team:

Arizona -- 37
Atlanta -- 37
Baltimore -- 20
Buffalo -- 17
Carolina -- 29
Chicago -- 16 (all RB Matt Forte)
Cincinnati -- 24
Cleveland -- 3
Dallas -- 15
Denver -- 44
Detroit -- 37
Green Bay -- 8
Houston -- 36
Indianapolis -- 24
Jacksonville -- 9 (all DE Derrick Harvey)
Kansas City -- 70
Miami -- 32
Minnesota -- 7
New England -- 21
New Orleans -- 31
N.Y. Giants -- 7
N.Y. Jets -- 16
Oakland -- 11
Philadelphia -- 15 (all WR DeSean Jackson)
Pittsburgh -- 1
St. Louis -- 31
San Diego -- 6
San Francisco -- 7
Seattle -- 24
Tampa Bay -- 7
Tennessee -- 20
Washington -- 14

Hmm, would've figured New England had more than 21. Mayo started 16 by himself, I know Wilhite and Wheatley each had at least a couple each, and I thought Guyton got some starts opposite Mayo at ILB...Must be mistaken.

Sad that with 3 2nd rounders last year all of our rookie starts came from one 7th round safety. But props to Hort kid's gonna be a monster.

Does it mean drafted rookies only, or undrafted rookies as well? Because Mayo had 16, Guyton had 2, BenJarvus Green-Ellis had 3, Wheatley had 1, and Wilhite had 4, but Guyton and BJGE were undrafted.

interested to know who started 37 games for the cardinals as a rookie

If you count the playoffs(and say that he started all of them) Hightower has 13

DRC started 9 games including the playoffs, thats leaves 15 games

That's what you get when you have 0 picks in the first 3 rounds and your top 2 picks (2 fourth rounders) both miss most of the year with injuries.

Most of rookie starts come when veterans get injured. In the salary cap era most teams carry a lot of rookies as their backups because they are cheap. However, when a veteran starter gets injured, the rookie may get to start but by next season, they are often replaced by new rookies who make less money.
Only 23-26% of 1st rounders start right off the bat as rookies, often becoming starters around the 8th game. However as I mentioned, injuries can speed up the process significantly because teams as mentioned, rely on their rookies to back up starters in many cases.
A high # of starts by rookies is probably far more reflective of injuries than talent.

Eddie Royal and Ryan Clady started 16 each I think. Then I guess Josh Bell, Barrett,Hillis, and Woodyard all started randomly,

Not sure. He has 24 rookie starts for the Colts, but here is what I tallied:

Mike Pollak, 13 GS
(UDFA) Eric Foster 11 GS
Jamey Richard 7 GS
Tom Santi 2 GS
Steve Justice 1 GS

Not including the UDFA Foster, the sum is 23 which is close. I triple-checked to make sure I didn't miss a start.

My guess is he just added Pollak's 13 and Foster's 11 to get the 24, like an idiot not doing the actual "legwork" to get the right numbers. Kirwan is not that smart.

One thing everyone should keep in mind is that a lot of teams had rookies contribute but not start.

Nickel backs, slot receivers, tandem running backs.....great ways to get guys experience even if they're not starting.

So just looking at the amount of starts each team gave their rookies can be misleading, because it's possible they had a lot of guys get experience still.

Yup, thats what I assumed. An UDFA starting is just as important as a top draft pick rookie starting, in most cases. If you take out BJGE and Guyton its alot closer to 21 for the pats, which must mean thats what he is doing, which is stupid.

Rachal, and Morgan were the only rookies that started. Reggie Smith and Kentwan Balmer will both probably start next yearat some point.

Any chance Richard's going get any starts next season? Gotta love a buffalo bull representin in the NFL, so I'm curious what the situation is with your interior oline. Was he playing center with pollack at guard or vice versa?

Chris Johnson had the bulk of the rookie starts for the Titans, and should be the starter next season. Jason Jones started a few games at DT when Haynesworth went down, and should be a starter next year next to Tony Brown. I think Lavelle Hawkins started the Kansas City game, but he wasn't involved much as we had a huge rushing total.

The next biggest contributor was William Hayes in the DE rotation. LB Stanford Keglar and TE Craig Stevens were solid contributors on ST's.
