Well, not totally what I was wanting or expecting but after last year I have learned to let the pros do their jobs, i.e. TD picking players. I like that both guys are long time starters at bigger schools who have shown flashes of greatness. Hopefully, they will come in and contribute immediately, but I wouldn't count on much from our rookies this year. We are a returning playoff contender and, as such, will look to have as little turnover in our starters as possible.

Michael Johnson may have been a good pick too, but I guess that all 32 teams have seen enough that they don't like.

We've addressed two major needs with good players. Satisfactory first day.

Will be interesting to see whether we go LB, OT, CB, or DE with the 3rd rounder tomorrow.

Hey, maybe Johnson will still be there...

I hope Johnson is there. if you told me in January we were getting both Jerry and Moore I would have been ecstatic. so I might as well smile now.

Watching some highlights, Jerry reminds me a lot of Rod Coleman. I'm not sure how he's going to work at NT. Gotta have faith in Smith and Thomas though. I wanted Michael Johnson, but William Moore is a high reward pick. I like it. Two guys with some durability issues today..

I've cooled on the Jerry pick, but I would have preferred Everette Brown.

Thing is, a player tends to slide for a reason. Obviously a lot of teams had concerns about Brown, so he was far from a slam dunk.

I guess it also shows that we're optimistic about Anderson hitting his stride. Hopefully not overly optimistic.

Regarding our DTs, both Babineaux and Jerry are at their best when stunting, slanting etc, so I'm guessing that our scheme will feature a lot of movement against the run, rather than basic gap control.

That can lead to a lot of TFL, but it can occasionally go badly wrong, and puts a lot of pressure on the linebackers.

Still, if Anderson does progress, then JA98-Babs-Jerry-JA55 would be a hell of a pass-rushing D-line!

the 3rd round pick will be the hardest to predict so far. We'll it's 90% gonna be defense, Im thinking probably a linebacker, but what do i know.

Im pretty happy with day 1. I mean, both are respectable picks, and neither was a reach, and both help with our D. If Moore can play more like his junior year self, Itll be a great pick

I mean, Crabtree wasnt the first WR taken, Sure he was hurt, but when you take one ahead of him that probably only went ahead because of speed, thats a bad pick. I love Heyward-Bey... in fact, im a huge fan, but to take him 7th, when Crabtree was pretty much the best WR in the draft, and the next 5 were slightly below, thats a reach.

So is Jackson at 3... just crazy

Jammal Anderson is a prototype 3-4 DE as well. We would just need anoher big MLB if Trey & Moorehead could hold down the NT.

Anderson will never be a pass rusher. The team must assume he is a bust, which is partially true.

IMO we came out of day one with our biggest need, DE, unsolved.

And I don't think it's a mystery why Everette Brown fell. He's very short for DE or 3-4 OLB, and doesn't have the athleticism to overshadow it.

Nonetheless, I still expect him to succeed. Good athlete who knows how to rush the passer, and great in pursuit.

That just awful. A #2 corner from San Jose St. who is extremely raw. Awesome.

Is he that raw? He started for three years. San Jose St isn't USC, but it's not a wastelands.

He's got good speed, decent size at 5'10" and 185, and has plenty of interceptions. Also seems like a good kid.

A reach, perhaps, but Baker, Douglas, and Jackson were all condemned as reaches last year, and they turned out ok.

Most likely to be our dimeback this year, behind Houston, Jackson, and Hutchins, and may compete for a starting role subsequently.

It does seem strange to pass on a lot of the bigger names that we've been talking about all year, but I'm happy to give TD a little bit of credit for knowing what he's talking about.

He's been described to me as quite raw with potential. While I have a lot of faith in TD, I'm just not a fan of drafting a raw player with poor measurables in the 3rd round.

Ive actually wached SJST twice this year.... from what I remember seeing, he doesn't make too many mistakes, and when he does, he is very good at making sure it's not a big one. Ive seen him slip, but on the same play, he made sure the WR had nowhere to go once he caught it. Every DB has gotten burned in their career... it just happens. But Owens is very good at reading plays and contains the receiver well... I am surprised with the pick, but I am fine with it.

Maybe if we are lucky, Sidbury will be there for our 4th rounder, although he is expected to be gone by then

Well, he's got 38 career starts.

Also, I wouldn't describe his measurables as poor:

40 Yard Dash : 4.51 seconds
Bench Press : 14.0 reps
Vertical Jump : 34.5 inches
Broad Jump : 110.0 inches
3 Cone Drill : 6.93 seconds

Compare that with Darius Butler, whom we considered with our 1st rounder, apparently:

5'11", 183
40 Yard Dash : 4.46 seconds
Vertical Jump : 43.0 inches

3 Cone Drill : 6.92 seconds
20 Yard Shuttle : 4.19 seconds

Butler is obviously better, but the only real difference is in the jump drills, in which Butler is just ridiculously explosive. Owens has pretty decent measurables, and apparently run sub4.4 at his proday - and he's had good production at a level that is far from mickey mouse.

I'm with you in being surprised, definitely, but I can see what TD might have been basing this pick on.

Now we need some OL and OLB depth.

Duke and Ellerbe would be a nice combo.

By the way, the fact that we haven't addressed OLB yet makes me think that we'll at least kick the tyres on Leroy Hill.

4 picks, all defensive. Really, its what we needed. Definetly should pick up an OL in the 5th, and I think we should go after Hill in FA as well

WOW, Sidbury is a huge steal at this point in the draft. He could easily be the Mathis type or DE we've been looking for opposite Abe on passing downs.

Let's not give up on Anderson off the bat people, it's not like Strahan was an All Pro right when he came into the league. Anderson will be, at the very least, very good against the run as he continues to mature in the NFL.

As for the corner, again, I will not doubt TD's decisions. Hopefully, this guy will turn out to be the solid corner we need.
