Compared to a dinky netbook, no. Compared to a Sony Viao and a Macbook (which were the two laptops people were mentioning when I made my post), it's terrifically cheap.

Scotty, for your sake, the best route to go is a netbook. They're really small and you can find them for decent pricing. Dell makes an alright one, but the key is that they have solid state drives which make it even more durable if you want to take it to classes. And for storage, just get an external, which you can leave unplugged unless you need it (it's bad to leave them running).

Well now it is my turn to buy my laptop for university.
My program suggests that I do not get a mac and get a PC.
Right now I am looking at the Dell inspiron with 4GB Ram, 2.0GHz processer, it also has a 15.6" HD screen which is important to me as I plan on getting a slingbox to watch tv on.
Thoughts on this Dell and any other advice would be appreciated.

The Mac vs PC argument is basically preference, though often times people forget that most kids only have cheap laptops in terms of price. PCs for the most part are like civics and little Asian cars, they are budget cars. Macs are more of a luxury car.
I would right now like a mac though, cause I'm into music making, and my computer is just not working out, though it is kind of old. I have had a mac, it lasted a while and was good to me, just like my pc.
Anyway, you can get some nice laptops for $800-$1000.
Dell has decent laptops, I hate their desktops though.
Oh, if you are going to take business classes and need programs like excel, access and all those, you can't use a mac. I think it was because of the grader that you would download, I know you can have those programs, but they didn't work with the school's system. So I would see kids having to do 3 hour long projects in computer labs.

well, I was surprised with a package outside my door, from Dell. So yea, free Dell from my parents as a present=win.
So far it's been pretty good, only had it not even a day yet though...

Well I've had it for a couple of weeks and things are fine so far, minus a little iPod issue that I'm having.

There's a bit of a misconception about Macs and making music. It used to be that Macs were the only real option because Firewire kicked the crap out of the original USB ports (and, to a lesser extent, because Logic was the sequencer of choice for a large portion of the music industry). Today, with USB 2.0 and tons of legitimate crossover software, the only concerns with making music on any computer are cpu power and your sound card. If you want an on-board sound card, PC is the way to go (although I don't know why someone would want one of those over a good USB/Firewire interface). And CPU power still comes cheaper on a PC than it does on a Mac.
Honestly, unless you have to have Logic over Pro Tools/Cakewalk/Garage Band (or one of the really good open source sequencers, like Reaper), the conversation for PC vs. Mac in terms of music composing is the same as it would be for most computing activities.
