Default Pats talking to Stallworth

Patriots looking to sign an ex-Eagles receiver
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The Patriots may not be done just yet. They are talking with Dante Stallworth.

He was traded from the New Orleans Saints to the Philadelphia Eagles last season.

Stallworth could help at receiver, especially if Troy Brown retires. Tom Brady would love to see him stretch the field, as Stallworth is known for his tremendous speed.

Last year Stallworth had 38 catches, 725 yards and 5 touchdowns in 11 games.

I've been hoping that the Pats would swoop in and trade for Randy Moss. Probably not gonna happen, anymore. They give Welker a huge signing bonus and now talking to Stallworth.

but i can pretty much guarantee if they gain stallworth and draft nice, they will be the super bowl pick for alot of magazines

I don't think the Pats would get Donte Stallworth, and itsw not just because I am an Eagles fan. You DID sign Welker, and you have Chad Jackson to be your future #1 receiver, unless his ACL is torn so badly he won't be able to play ever again. I truly think it is unrealistic the Pats would go after Donte.

It would be a great signing by the Patriots if they do get him. I can't really understand either though, why they would want to give away their 2nd round pick for Welker if they believe they have a good shot at signing Stallworth.

I hope Stallworth goes to NE so it increases the Packers chances of bringing in Moss

Why does everyone think of Donte' Stallworth as a speed reciever? He is not. He ran a 4.48 40. Everyone is saying he ran a 4.2, thats incorrect. That was some rumor that happened around draft day. He has solid speed, but nothing special.

PATS, WELKER MEETING

The New England Patriots are by all appearances proceeding with plans to sign receiver Wes Welker, a restricted free agent, to an offer sheet. Per the Boston Globe, the Pats and Welker arrived in Boston Sunday night to meet with the team.

John Tomase of the Boston Herald addresses the poison-pill potential, which we've previously explained at length. [Editor's note: Has anyone else noticed that the Herald now pushes the last line or two of many of its stories to a second Internet page, in what can only be described as a ridiculously shallow attempt to drive up their web stats?] As we see it, the fact that the NFL tried to get the NFLPA to agree to strike this wrinkle from the CBA means that the NFLPA rightly should be suspicious whenever any team tenders an offer sheet to a restricted free agent without the same kind of form-over-substance verbiage that the Vikings and the Seahawks used against each other in 2006 to craft offers that they respectively couldn't afford to match.

And though some teams are reluctant to use the device, the Chargers, Falcons, and Chiefs tendered their own restricted free agents at the highest possible level in order to deter others from pilfering their players via the poison-pill.

Moreover, not a single player was strapped with the transition tag this year, since by definition it provides only a right of first refusal and no compensation. With the poison pill in play, that's no different than the guy being a fully unrestricted free agent.

If the Pats sign Welker to an offer sheet and the Fins don't match it, Miami will receive New England's second-round pick in the 2007 draft.

Finally, one of our readers noticed the irony of the value of the seven-year, $38.5 million offer sheet that the Pats reportedly plan to put in front of Welker. Last year, Deion Branch signed for seven years, $39 million after he was traded to the Seahawks following a rancorous holdout.

NFL | Stallworth reportedly in substance-abuse program
Mon, 5 Mar 2007 08:14:52 -0800

ESPN.com reports free agent WR Donte' Stallworth (Eagles), according to a report in The Philadelphia Daily News, is a participant in the league's substance-abuse program and could be subjected to a suspension should he violate terms of the program again. Stallworth has yet to visit any teams this offseason as a free agent.

Looks liek this will cause him to miss the big payday everyone else got.

Wow, if the substance abuse thing is true, that is really surprising. I would not have expected that from someone like him. He seems like a nice guy, but everybody has a secret side to themselves. I would be more concerned with fixing this than getting him to sign with us. There are more important things than football, and getting this straightened out should be on the top of the list. Football can wait as far as I am concerned. He needs to figure this out and get his life back in order. I really hope this isn't true though, because like I said before, he seems like a nice guy, he's a good teammate, and a good player. Best of luck Donte.
