Redskins hire Haslett
Redskins hire Haslett
A league source tells us that Haslett has been hired by the Redskins to serve as defensive coordinator under Mike Shanahan.

just on my way to post this. i think its a good hiring. i dont think haslett is a good candidate as a head coach but as strictly a dcoord i like what he brings. hes got some talent to work with. will be interested to see which guys he keeps around and which go.

Agreed. I'm sure he'll be more aggressive than Blanche but I don't know if he will runa 3/4 or 4/3 base defence (he's done both).

I had heard that you guys might be going to the 3-4 but I'm not going to pretend to know I don't follow the Skins that much.
That said from the outside looking in I would think you would be better off running a 4-3.

Good hire for a DC. A legit coaching staff seems to be coming together here...get rid of Danny Smith and hire a new ST coach next.

Very good hiring. I love hiring former head coaches as coordinators. I think Haslett would have even been an average head coach, so the Redskins' defense should be a lot stouter this coming season. Look at the kind of impact guys like Mike Nolan and Dom Capers had as defensive coordinators this year turning over defenses which hadn't been very good in 2008 but played at a pretty high level in 2009.

only thing i dont like about going to a 3-4 is its wasting away andres talent.. although he is getting old he had his best season last year and i would hate to see it dimished by a year in a 3-4.

theres still been no word that we are moving to a 3-4 only speculation. im torn right now on the switch because i think it could be great for some players (orakpo, gholston, wilson, and all the dbs), im worried about how some others will fit in (haynesworth, jarmon, and andre carter). i think lfb, mcintosh, and blades will acclimate fine inside, although lfb and blades are a bit short for the 3-4 and mcintosh probably needs to add 5 or so more lbs of strength. still, haslett has a history with both 3-4 and 4-3 defenses so at this point im still going to wait for some sort of official announcement before i believe anything.
if we do go 3-4, that makes mclain an interesting prospect at #4.

For someone who knows more about the 3-4 scheme, why would Haynesworth be a bad fit for NT aside from his horrible conditioning? And if he doesn't play it, who on our team could?

I think this is a very nice hire. I'd bet money that you'd stick with the 4-3. I wouldn't even consider a move to the 3-4. It makes no sense at all.

To help out Haslett, the skins have brought in lou Spanos from the steelers to coach the linebackers.
Would have liked the steeler's Butler, but he just got a promotion to miami def. coach.
I'll wait to see what Shanny wants from his defense but the 3-4 is coming into the mix for the skins.
Huge games this weekend in the playoffs with the battle between the 3-4 defenses(jets/cowboys/ravens) against the rested 4-3 defenses(colts/vikes/saints).
If the jets/cowboys and ravens shut down the potent offenses then there is your food for thought on switching the redskin defense.
You dont want to make the playoffs and just be "one and done".

Seriously, the outcome of these games will help you determine which Defense YOUR team should run? That's pretty ridiculous, if not down right stupid. For every Cowboys or Jets defense, there is a 34 defense like the Browns or Chiefs.

Hey Paul,
HOW ABOUT DEM COWBOYS!!
The rested 4-3 defenses came out on top,too much energy for the offenses to cope with.
Favre and Brees were just outstanding.
Except for the jets, but they were going up against Norv,so they always had a chance.
Stupid or not, i think you will find the redskins taking on more 3-4 looks this up coming season.

To tell you about Haslett (from a Saints perspective) I dont see how he is a D coordinator, just because our D sucked when he was head coach. But I guess it coulda been the D coordinator too? Anyways he is a 4-3 coach with little blitzing and man coverage pretty much. Thats going off memory from 4+ years ago.

he ran a 4-3 in NO but has experience with 3-4s from other teams. from what weve heard so far it looks like the skins might be going with a hybrid look. well see.
