5 Modern Sports That Started As Excuses for Sex and Violence

Quote:
#5 Football: Basically a Town-Wide Riot

American football was cobbled together from a bunch of different sports, as you can pretty much tell by watching it. It's got some rugby, some soccer, some attempted murder. Probably the oldest ancestor was mob football, which was played throughout the Middle Ages and was really closer to a spirited match of Calvinball than anything else.
This medieval football distinguished itself from the modern game by doing away with those silly and pointless conventions we know as "rules." Teams could be as large as they wanted and occasionally involved entire villages, and the only thing expressly forbidden was the killing of opposing players (although many agree this is a fine strategy if it can be done without attracting the attention of the refs).

Anything else was fair game. Unsurprisingly, matches often dissolved from "rioting" into "rioting while things are on fire." The goal of the game was to get the ball to the other team's goal line, which were often put at opposite ends of the town. As a result the field was huge and littered with troublesome obstacles like buildings and the elderly.
Needless to say, there were some accidental deaths and the game was banned no less than 30 times in England over the course of three centuries.

Over time, they steadily changed the game as people decided they wanted less murder in their sports. By the 16th and 17th centuries, it was civilized enough to make its way onto university campuses, and a few centuries after that it was all about pads and rules and not stabbing people. Still, to this day after their team wins a big game, some fans like to take to the streets and reenact the old days.

I wanted to post this in the pro football section but it clearly isn't thread worthy. So I decided to post it here.

Sweetness playing a whole series at QB!

Great piece, but listen to the idiot sportscaster Tim Ryan from CBS at the 2 minute mark when Packers DE #90 Ezra Johnson goes down with a knee injury, which he is clutching and grabbing.

Ryan says it's the guy's back that's hurt because he had a bad back during the season. Open your eyes much Tim Ryan?

Meh, I'm sure he started off at a much higher salary as an NFL backup than he would have in the real world. Places don't really give a **** where your undergraduate degree came from, and they're definitely not starting any just-graduated kids at a salary above $100,000.

Is that their college completion percentage? How the **** did Ryan Leaf get drafted with a 53%?? What offense was Leaf in? "**** it I'm going deep every time"?

Nope, his pro completion percentage is, like, 48% or something. His junior year, he completed like 55% of his passes.

Didn't Merrill Hodge have to re-learn to tie his shoe laces?

Concussions are scary ****. People often worry about it in boxers and fighters, but if you think about it if you took a fighter you could probably equate the raw energy smashing into their brain to football hits.

I'd wager, and I'm in no way qualified to do so, that a football player from highschool to the end of their pro career has a lot more blunt force trauma rattling their brain than even the most experienced pro fighter at more common intervals.

I think the only thing you can quantify in the college game to the pro's is how well they handled the offense they were in considering their supporting cast and system.

To be a homer, sure Clausen didn't get a tick in every box, but he did a damn fine job considering his supporting cast on the field and that outweighs what a quiz and raw stats about % and starts can tell me.

The best GMs and scouting departments in the NFL generally place the emphasis on one thing and that's what the tape tells them, the rest is just a gauge of how well they'll adjust in the pros and how long that adjustment will take.

Instead of relying on those kind of numbers to decide if a QB can play in the NFL at all, it should be relied on as to how long it will take a QB to be ready to start.

We're gonna see widespread changes re: the safety of the game, though. This stuff could effectively kill the sport at the youth and high school levels.

More evidence as to why I think it's stupid to put people who spent 10+ years of their life accelerating dementia in media positions instead of people who are, you know, educated, trained, and qualified for said positions.

We're gonna see widespread changes re: game safety, though, because when Chris Henry is already developing brain damage despite playing the least physical position on the field, and spent most of his pro career suspended or injured, you know you've got a huge problem.

Didn't know where to put these interesting little tidbits, so I guess here's as good a place as any.

Per Rotoworld:

Retired center LeCharles Bentley is suing the Browns, claiming he "almost died" after contracting a staph infection at the team's facility back in 2006.
Former teammate Joe Jurevicius recently settled a similar suit with the Browns, though it's not known how much he received. Bentley is seeking more than $25,000, which hardly seems unreasonably considering the outbreak of staph infections at their unsanitary facility.

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg believes thinks Michael Vick has finally captured his old form from his days with the Falcons.
"In our mini camps, you could see that great, great athleticism," Mornhinweg said. "I would expect great things from Michael Vick this year." Vick was clearly rusty as both a passer and a runner last season, but reports out of Philly this spring have been overwhelmingly positive. Expect to see his role grow in 2010, especially in the red zone.

Ed Reed stated Wednesday that he feels a lack of support from the Ravens, specifically regarding his contract.
Reed characterized the issues as "minor" before stating his case for a new contract. "The word I got was, 'We’re comfortable with where we’re at,'" Reed said. "Yes, you would be comfortable with the plays that I'm making on the field and paying me what you're paying me ... There are six, seven players in front of me at my position [in terms of money] that I honestly wouldn't let hold my jock."

Bentley is only asking for $25,000 in damages? He needs to get a new attorney. With what his contract was worth, he could easily get millions from them.

I remember being mad when he left the Saints, and he didn't even play a year when he got that staph. Its saddening that it happened to him, and it derailed him to where he never played again (Though he tried to again once I believe). Your right, he should be able to get millions from them.

This nowadays he should just go out and say give me 25 million. Granted he wont get that, but $25,000 the browns should pay that just to shut up him.

why should we give this guy a new contract when he said he may retire this off season. IT looks like he will be back but is coming off of a big hip surgery where he may miss a lot of time. I hope the Ravens dont bite and re-sign Ngata first.

He claimed after his hip surgery he thinks he can play til he is 40 now. But in the same interview he said he thinks Troy Smith could win us a superbowl.

I agree it would suck if he left.

I know YFS you will like this, my favorite Reed memory was 2006 playoffs against Indy, even though we lost that game Reed picked Manning off twice. He would have had 4 INTs but Ray Lewis deflected 2 passes going straight to Reed. If Reed had 4 INTs in that game not only would the Ravens have won, but that probably would go down as the greatest game by a DB in NFL post season history.
