Peria Jerry's recovery from a knee injury that cost him most of his rookie year has been a topic of conversation throughout the offseason. Again, it was only one practice, but Jerry looked fine to me this morning. The Falcons are bringing him along cautiously and giving him some practices off. But all indications I’m getting are that he’ll be fully ready for the regular season.
Another guy coming back from injury is receiver Harry Douglas. It now has been more than a year since he tore his anterior cruciate ligament. I interviewed Douglas after practice for an upcoming post and he said he’s fine physically. More importantly, Douglas looked to be completely fine on the field and back to where he was before the injury.

Matt Ryan said the most impressive offensive player thus far has been Harry Douglas. Players call him the fastest player on our roster. Im very excited to see what he can do as the #2 WR.

This Jenkins injury could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. I've long wanted an upgrade over Jenkins and hopefully Douglas takes full advantage of this opportunity.

5:03 pm The punt return and kick return competitions are open, but WR Eric Weems said they are WR Harry Douglas' to lose. "I feel like it's his job," Weems said. "Unfortunately he had an accident which put me in that situation, but basically it's his job."

That really doesn't say anything new. If Harry does indeed take over the #2 job, then I don't see why he would be punt and kick returning as well when we have a guy like weems.

How's Collin Peek been doing at TE in your camp?
If he isn't working out, send him to Dallas. They lost Phillips for the yr. in last night's HoF game, he was set to be the #3 TE. And #4 Sicko (really is his name) got a concussion, so Dallas can't afford any more TE injuries this Thursday & will be riding the waiver wire for TEs now.

We have some really good TEs trying to make the roster right now and beside Gonzo the position is really youthful. We could end up picking TE with our first pick next year.
We got Zinger, Palmer, and Peek battling it out all who could make a great acquisition to your team if they don't work out for us. I heard Peek was a little banged up so there is not much on him, but we'll see how he does when the pre season starts.

That could change the speed of our offense significantly. We are replacing slow footed Jenkins for a guy who might be the fastest player on our roster? Weapons everywhere.
I'd still like to see Douglas in the slot for 3 wide sets though. He is absolutely perfect for that role and could play the role of Finneran as the 3rd down conversion machine (ala Wes Welker).
I don't know how many times I've said this and I'm sure all of you feel the same way, but this season cannot come soon enough. We are returning all 11 starters from last year...this is the 3rd year of our OL staying in tact...3rd year for Matt Ryan in the same offense...Michael Turner is in shape and has been living in the weight room...The defense could get 5 new starters by the end of the season (Moore, Robinson, Spoon, Jerry, Biermann).

Mike Jenkins is not slow footed at all. He is however, unable to catch **** at times.

10:37 am LB Sean Weatherspoon is having another solid outing in practice. He continues to execute his assignments in coverage, highlighted by knocking a pass out of RB Maurice Jones-Drew's hands.
10:32 am CB Brent Grimes , who unofficially sits behind CB Chris Owens on the depth chart, had an athletic pass breakup. Grimes has shown improvement but his consistency still lacks. For every athletic play Grimes makes he remains vulnerable to giving up a big play.
9:56 am The Falcons released an unofficial depth chart for their game against Kansas City on Friday. Listed as starters: DT Peria Jerry , CBs Dunta Robinson , Chris Owens and LBs Stephen Nicholas and Mike Peterson .

I would call him slow footed.
He's fast, but he's not quick. And that negates his long speed for the most part.

He's not quick, but he has good speed to separate from the CB at times and run after the catch.
I'm glad Chris Owens is our starting CB. I'm not really surprised by the depth chart right now, hope we cut peterson and spoon starts.

Jesus AFMB is full of retards. Apparently Kerry Meier is the steal of the draft because he can catch passes in practice against 3rd string CB's. They compare him to Hines Ward and now Matt Ryan has a strong arm. I have heard it all lol.
Did you guys watch the Michael Jenkins injury video? http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-fantas...houlder-injury
Am I the only one concerned at how severely underthrown that ball was and how Matt Ryan had to take 5 yards to step up into that throw with all of his might and it still fell way short?

If Matt would man up and put some weight on it may not be such an issue.
His deep ball was on point during his rookie year.

wow that was a weak throw matty. I like Kerry Meier but I just don't think he has the speed to contribute in the NFL.

Mike Smith asked Jamaal Anderson to aggressively put on some weight this offseason. He's around 300 and I hear he's having a great TC. I'll believe it when I see it, still doubtful anything has changed with him.

I've been hearing that Brian Finneran is going to get the
start at 2nd option and Harry is going to stay at the slot
which is good for Douglas since Matt has said that hes going to focus
a little more on underneath routes this season

I like that. The Patriots always "started" some hack at the SE and it was Wes Welker and Randy Moss that were the real threats. Harry Douglas is better in the slot, just as long as he gets starters reps.

Might as well fully buy into the notion that he is a DT. It is really sad how that pick turned out. Rich McKay always put too much stock in "potential" and would reach on players that just would never put in the work and reach it: Anderson, Houston, Jimmy Williams, Kenyatta Walker with the Bucs.

Not that this should come as a surprise, but Spoon is starting tomorrow.

Sounds more like because Peterson is injured the the changing of the guard. Hopefully Spoon is able to take the position by storm though.
Seems like we've got a lot of guys banged up, but nothing too serious. Other than Jenkins of course.

The injury is serious but it's not a big blow. IMO it's worse losing Harry Douglas then jenkins. Whoever takes up the #2 spot should do fine.

From ESPN's NFC South blog:
Quote:
By Pat Yasinskas
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Time for some observations and notes out of Tuesday morning’s combined practice between the Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars. - Although defensive tackle Peria Jerry got some work, coach Mike Smith already has ruled him out for the preseason opener against Kansas City. Cornerback Brian Williams and receiver Harry Douglas, who also are coming back from knee injuries, also have been ruled out. Smith said he’s optimistic all three can play later in the preseason.
- Douglas didn’t take part Tuesday morning and starting receiver Michael Jenkins is out for four to six weeks with a shoulder injury. That paved the way for veteran receiver Brian Finneran to get a lot of work with the first team. This is situation obviously in flux with Douglas expected to keep getting more work as the preseason goes on. Rookie Kerry Meier also is getting lots of work and has responded well. But Finneran’s experience allows the first-team offense to get work done without a lot of disruption. He knows the system and, as a run blocker, is a reasonable facsimile of Jenkins.
- Cornerback remains an interesting position on this team. Dunta Robinson is set as one starter, but he’s not practicing, although he’s expected to return soon. The Falcons seemed to be using Christopher Owens and Brent Grimes as their first-team cornerbacks and Chevis Jackson as the nickel back against the Jaguars and I didn’t notice any of them getting beat regularly.
- Curtis Lofton got all the first-team work in the middle and rookie Sean Weatherspoon and Stephan Nicholas seemed to get most of the work on the outside. Veteran Mike Peterson sat out and Weatherspoon worked in his spot on the weak side. The Falcons have given Weatherspoon time at both outside spots and it doesn’t sound like they’ve made any firm decision on where they will use him. By the way, it’s only practice, but I did notice the Falcons sending linebackers on blitzes several times.
- Looked like quarterback Matt Ryan and receiver Roddy White already have their chemistry down. They hooked up on a nice pass to the back of the end zone in a red-zone drill.
- It also looked like reserve quarterback John Parker Wilson and reserve receiver Eric Weems have their timing down. I saw them connect on a nice touchdown later in that same red-zone drill.
- People in Atlanta always get a little nervous anytime veteran defensive end John Abraham gets up slowly or doesn’t appear to be moving well. There was one slight scare Tuesday morning. At one point, Abraham stayed on the ground a little longer than usual and got up slowly. He came over to the sideline and talked to a trainer. But it appeared as if Abraham and the trainer adjusted his shoulder pads a bit and he returned to practice quickly.
- I didn’t see Atlanta owner Arthur Blank out at practice. But Warrick Dunn, who now owns a portion of the team, showed up and was making the rounds on the sidelines. Dunn played running back for Tampa Bay and Atlanta. I saw him catching up with Jacksonville quarterbacks coach Mike Shula at one point. Shula was offensive coordinator when Dunn was playing for the Buccaneers early in the Tony Dungy years.
|
He also said in a later post that Jamaal Anderson is having a great camp, which he initially took with a grain of salt.

I heard rumblings that the Falcon's defense has looked largely unimpressive thus far in camp?
I'm one of the few that are not jumping on the Falcons bandwagon this year as the South team that could knock the Saints off the podium.
I think (waits for ppl to call me crazy) the Panthers would be the team to do that if anyone other than the Saints win the division.
