Default Concussions

Does anyone have any statistics on the number of concussions in the NFL? It seems that every year, some new helmet comes out and nothing gets better. Also, it seems like football has the most concussions of the major sports with the exception of hockey.

Also, with all of these players suffering concussions, what do you think their long-term health is going to be like?

Not good.. Memory issues, light sensitivity, head aches perhaps. But that's part of the sport. If they don't want those risks in the future, then you can always not play football, and take up another job like the rest of us 9 to 5 ers.

More and more research indicates that having a lot of concussions can lead to early onset dementia and alzheimers. That's a hell of a lot worse than a few headaches. The long term health affects are really serious.

The sport will always be risky. That said, a lot of the concussions are coming from the kind of hits that the NFL is trying (perhaps foolishly) to phase out.

Yeah, I had a bad concussion and I still have light sensitivity. I'd rather have the lights off and keep the blinds open for light then use a regular light. That or I am becoming a vampire. I don't get headaches which is a good thing.

There is no way to stop concussions though due to the nature of the sport. But if people don't like that aspect of the sport, or players don't want to risk it, then they can always not play football. It's not like anyone is making them play it.

Obviously Football and Hockey would have the most concussions. Probably next sport would be either Rugby, or goalies for soccer.

Yeah I've noticed a lot more helmets coming off this year.

Goalies for soccer? Don't see that happening. The only time I got concussions playing soccer was when I was involved in 2 mid-air collisions within a 15 minute period as a centre-half. That resulted from me and another player going for the ball.

I can see concussions occurring from rugby scrums, but none of my friends who played throughout HS have told me about suffering from one. Their tackling is more technique/wrap up based than running head on and colliding into other people.

IMO, new helmets don't do as much in preventing concussions for a variety of reasons. A person's brain isn't firmly attached to the inside of the skull. It floats around. It's like looking at water in a half empty bottle. You move the bottle forward, and stop moving it forward. Water will slosh against one side.

Now pretend the brain is the water. No matter how well you pad the inside of a helmet to slow down the stop, it's still a sudden stop due to impact, and the whiplash. The brain will bounce around the inside of the cavity, unless you have players with foam helmets that look like Jack in the Box's head to soften the force of impact.

there were those goofy helmets that were supposed to be concussion proof, but they were so dumb looking, how much do you really care about being 60
