Yup. that's what it looks like. It appears it's just a series of 1 year deals that give the Skins a lot of flexibility.

LLOLLOLOL.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5812371

Quote:
One of the contract's most significant points is a payment due this offseason, when the Redskins must decide whether to pay McNabb a $10 million option bonus. If they do, it would trigger the rest of the contract and make Washington liable for McNabb's $2.5 million base salary in 2011.

If they don't, then McNabb would stand to cash in. McNabb then would get to become an unrestricted free agent at a time when multiple teams will be looking to upgrade their quarterback, the position that commands the game's priciest salaries.

McNabb's agent, Fletcher Smith, clarified some of the details of McNabb's deal Tuesday to The Associated Press and acknowledged while the contract is worded so that it has "$40 million in guarantees," the Redskins do have an option to cut McNabb at the end of the season with no further money due.
Wow. I seriously feel bad for McNabb. He's too stupid to even color between the lines. Signing a contract like this is basically asking for your own release.

Why would that be dumb for Mcnabb? He was going to be a free agent. If he's cut he walks away with the guaranteed 3.5 mil and is still free to sign with Arizona, Minnesota, or wherever.

If the Redskins are paying a guy 3.5 million so they can cut him, do you really think there is going to be a long line to give him a big contract?

His value will be determined by how he plays, it's up to him, if the Skins cut him they have their own reasons, a proven QB like Mcnabb will always find a home.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...f-2011-season/

WOW!!! McNabb basically gets $3.50m now but the Redskins have until the Friday before week one of the 2011 regular season to pick up the option. The Redskins can basically sit on McNabb for the entire off-season and pre-season, not exercise the option thus letting him become an UFA and owe him nothing.

And if McNabb wants to buy his way out of WSH, it would cost him $30m. Basically, WSH looks like they're going to screw McNabb if they dont pick up his option in March and wait it out.

For McNabb, his agent his a moron but he's an even bigger moron for listening to him and signing that crappy ass contract. If I was McNabb, I never would have signed any contract whatsoever. I either become an UFA and decide if I want to stay or go or force the team to franchise tag me which if they did, would probably cost around $20m guaranteed once he signs it.

Because Washington really wants the reputation of trying to contractually screw their players, especially well established and productive ones.

The Redskins could screw McNabb, but why ever would they want to?

He isn't setting the world on fire to merit a huge roster bonus. If they bring in someone, anyone, during TC and they feel they can do the job just as well as McNabb for a fifth of the cost, they could release his ass. In fact, i hope that happens.

How is this a bad deal for McNabb? He gets an extra 3.5 million for this year, and then next year gets to either be a free agent, or part of a huge contract.

It's win win...

Because if the Redskins so decided, they could pull the contract out from under him well after free agency and the draft and then no team is going to be able to give him a huge deal. Major risk.

McNabb knows he's done as an NFL QB and wanted to grab as much cash as he could before he inevitably is cut before the 2011 season. Turns out $3.5 mill was all he could manage to squeeze out of Dan Snyder.

Just ask Favre how he gets 20 million for a year at the age of 42 from the Vikings, or how the Ravens paid out for a backup. A team will pay for McNabb

Completely different scenarios. The Vikings were the only team in the league that were gonna pay Favre that much money, because they're the only ones that needed him that bad. He knew the offense and he had already been there the previous year, so all he had to do was come back. And besides, Favre had arguably his best season ever last year with the Vikings. Nothing like McNabb.

but there reasons, which you stated, overcame the downs side. Fact that he wasn't as healthy as the past year, he was older, didn't get the 'it' with the offense during TC. McNabb for example, knows the Vikings offense and a team, like the Cards, Jags, etc.. will take a chance hoping he could get informed with the team during preseason and boost sales.

McNabb would be going back. I bet he signs in Arizona(although local sports radio here, says the organization is not as intrested as one might think with the garbage they have at qb).
