Default If Shurmur Goes to Cleveland

Sounds like there is a good chance the Rams are going to lose OC Shurmur. Can't say I'm to upset with that loss. IMO his game calling was extremely suspect this season and almost cost us a win or three by going to conservative. In fact, I think that's probably the main reason we lost to Tampa Bay.

If Shurmur goes, there have been rumors that Josh McDaniels or Brad Childress could be brought in. Curious on what your thoughts are on who we should hire if/when Shurmur goes to Cleveland.

NFLN's La Canfora is hearing that McDaniels could be Shurmur's replacement at OC.

I'm not sure what to think. On one hand, he's had success as an NFL offensive coordinator and I'm sure he'd help Bradford's development. On the other hand, his background is in a different offensive system and the Broncos videotaping incident leaves a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. But if Devaney/Spags feel he's the best option and a good guy to lead this offense, who am I to disagree? That said, I'd also be intrigued by Jim Zorn or John Ramsdell, but that's just me thinking out loud, nothing I've heard or read.

I'm kind of indifferent on Shurmur. He's done some good in that he's helped Bradford have a successful rookie season and, at times, got enough out of this offense to win some games. But at other times, I don't think he's been creative enough in terms of finding ways to move the ball effectively that also fit within Spags' conservative philosophy. In some games, it was as if he struggled to find a way adjust to what the defenses were doing or taking away. For instance, abandoning Jackson in the second half and failing to call the RB screen plays that worked so well in the first meeting between the teams.

So I'm not one of those screaming for his head, but I'm also not going to be heartbroken if he leaves. I'm sure he'd be able to do more with better talent, but I've not seen enough to make me feel the Rams have to find a way to hold on to him.

I would love to have Mcdaniels as our Offensive Coordinator. He's had great success in the league at that position, and he helped lead the Patriots to a 11-5 record with Matt Cassel as their starting Quarterback.

As for Shurmer, I really think he's getting a bad rep in St. Louis. Everyone talks about getting Bradford weapons, well Shurmer had to deal with the same thing, Maybe Shurmer was reallt tied down into what he could do with the playcalling due to the lack of talent at the Receiver position. The fact the Mike Holmgren wants Shurmer pretty much tells me all I need to know.

And then basically went MIA in the most important game of the season.

To be fair, The Rams only ran 51 plays on offense total. 17 of those targeted to go to Steven Jackson.

Not an excuse, IMO. Jackson was a focal point in the only drive that actually did anything in this game. Individually, he accounted for over half of the Rams' total offense in the first half. Yet the Rams responded in the second half by decreasing his workload (touched/targeted on 27% of second-half plays compared to 36% in the first half), and went to a 5:1 pass run ratio that included zero designed passes to Jackson.

***

Anyways, it's looking like Shurmur to Cleveland is basically finalized, as they're working on a deal that should be done in the next day or so.

The only concern with McDaniels as it relates to the players is the schematic shift on offense. But I think he's a better candidate than Childress due to his track record of offensive success, especially with quarterbacks. Per ESPN's Ed Werder and Tony Softli's Twitter account, respectively, McDaniels will interview on Saturday with Childress coming in next week.

McDaniels would allow the offense to put the ball down field more and open up the passing game. Childress would bring in the run game like he did in Minnesota. I think McDaniels would be a better fit with what we have and help Bradford grow. Either way hopefully they have the influence to bring in some free agents from the teams their leaving.

One of the concerns that I have had all along with the system Spagnuolo has put in place is that I think the WCO is becoming obsolete. Fewer and fewer teams are finding success with it, and defenses have pretty much figured it out. While I hate to see Bradford be put in a position to learn a whole new system, in the long run it will pay huge dividends IF they keep it in place and not play musical chairs with offensive coordinators.

A huge positive for this move would be if McDaniels can get one or two of these young receivers on his page and do what he did with Brandon Lloyd. I could definitely see that happening with a guy like Gibson, or maybe Alexander. I could also see Gilyard coming in with a whole new approach and making great strides in a new system.

I liked the move to McDaniels. Listen, I was prolly too harsh on Shurmur. He was so, so, so conservative. And he wasn't smart conservative against the Seahawks, he was dumb conservative. Jackson did not carry the ball enough, he was like our home run hitter. I know he had 17 targets and all, but he only carried like 10-12 times or something like that. But I like the move to MckyDs.
