Default "Pay to Play" - Business as Usual?

Ex-Auburn players say they received thousands in payments
http://m.sportingnews.com/ncaa-footb...ds-in-payments
Quote:
Four former Auburn football players detailed a “pay to play” arrangement that included payments totaling thousands of dollars before and after they decided to attend the university.

The players -- Chaz Ramsey, Troy Reddick, Stanley McClover and Raven Gray -- spoke on camera with reporter Andrea Kremer for a segment on HBO’s "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel." The report is set to air Wednesday
Definitely not surprising. Any affect on Newton's stock?

Its a bunch of former players who didn't pan out and now are angry and looking to cash in somehow. Ramsey is the guy who hurt his back and couldn't play anymore and then tried to sue the OL coach and the school for "mis-treating" his injury (and never got a penny in court BTW). Raven Gray was a top recruit who couldn't qualify out of HS, went to JUCO and got hurt, finally made it into Auburn and never did anything before flunking out likely because he couldn't stay in school. McClover entered the NFL draft early even though everyone told him not to, he ended up as a 7th round pick and lasted a few seasons and now whatever little money he made has run out.

There are 70-85 players on every roster on every team, that change every year. You dont think its hard to find a few guys who thought they were the **** in HS and would be future NFL millionaires, never panned out, and now feel vengeful because they feel Auburn somehow prevented them from becoming NFL stars? These guys were all recruited by Tuberville, who ran an extremely tight ship and proably lost his job because he was getting out-recruited by half the teams in the SEC.

A few former players talking doesn't change my mind. I have little doubt in my mind that rules are broken at all the major football factories. Whether it's paying players, giving them gifts, having someone else write papers for them, or whatever else. I bet they all do it to some degree.

100% agree. Although they still deserve the punishment associated with the rule break. Everyone speeds only the ones who get pulled over pay the fine. Same premise with major college football teams. All of them cheat in some degree but only the ones who get caught have to pay the piper.

That being NCAA practice is to wait 5 years for 'new' evidence to come to light and force Auburn to vacate the championship and wins... Why ruin their money-maker game when it matters when they can wait until it's irrelevant.

Will someone in the SEC actually get smacked or are they just gonna get another slap on the wrist?

The New York Daily News reports that former college football player Stanley McClover will also appear on the show, and reveals that he received not just cash but (gasp!) sexual services during a recruiting visit to Ohio State. McClover ultimately signed with Auburn, so we don’t know if that says more about quality of the school on The Plains or about the quality of the services (allegedly) rendered at the Columbus school.
Guess the SEC is not the only conference that pays their players.

Nothing is going to happen because the players aren't the only ones receiving wads of cash. Part of the reason why the NCAA loves the publicity of cracking down hard on a few of their rules is to pose the image that they are tough, when in actuality they let go of so much.

Mark Emmett was chancellor at LSU at the time that they were recruiting McClover. It was one of the schools he mentioned. This Investigation will go nowhere.

My 2nd fave p/o of the HBO expose' was the Gumbel panel discussion when someone said Maybe if the college presidents were at risk when these corrupt practices are exposed, maybe some of them getting fired instead of the ADs & fb HCs things might change. Someone else said Why should the college SEOs get involved at all? They're getting paid, claim they're enforcing the policies (of players NOT getting paid, LOL) while funneling $ to recruits & players with their hands out in the rampant pay for play that was about 99% certainly happening at Auburn & continuing there through the Cam Newton scandal as well as at Oregon.

My favorite part was McClover saying he received "sexual favors" while being recruited at Ohio St along with the envelope of money (the "cash handshake") at LSU. Andrea Kremer (she knows that sex sells on ESPN & on cable like nothing else) homed in on that asking if he took them, which he confirmed.

Why should the college presidents & people in charge of the FBS do anything about it indeed? the system is working for them, for the winning programs -- Chizik held a news conference Thurs, the next day after the HBO broadcast, saying That's not what we're all about here at Auburn (translation: It happened in 07 before my watch), could he be more disingenuous? Like he knew nothing of Newton's past when he brought him to Auburn. And the $ went through so many sets of hands the NCAA couldn't pinpoint any direct wrongdoing this season, & they had to know that -- Newton notably was eligible for only one yr. so they roll the dice & it worked, they won the national title & the megabucks that come with it, who cares about the taint on their unbelievably dirty program or the overhanging cloud of suspicion? Just get the $, worry about he NC & Newton's Heisman yanked down the road much later.....

Yeah, the opportunity for sex is pretty much available on all recruiting trips if the recruit goes out to party with current players. Which is what it sounds like happened at OSU.

"You wanna party kid?" "Uh, yeah, sure." Boom, the kid gets laid by hot football groupies.

The sport is terribly dirty. There needs to be some sort of above board professionalization. An option for kids to take only a scholarship (like now) or to take outside money (ala agents, boosters, Nike, etc...)

The reality is, most kids don't get paid illegally. The superstars can get it if they ask for it or are offered it. I would say a rule change like this would only effect a small percentage, say 3% of all college football players.

Most football programs are cash flow negative, so it's not like there is a whole bunch of money outside of the big programs floating around already.

False. ALL football programs are cash flow positive. Athletic departments lose money on Women's sports, track, baseball, etc.

Basically, Football and a few basketball teams make money that the rest of the department uses to fund their sport.

Quote:
Of the 66 automatic qualifying BCS conference schools, only five football programs failed to make a profit for the 2008-09 school year, according to the Equity in Athletics data. Rutgers, which spent a Big East-high $19.73 million, broke even. Four other programs, however, lost money: UConn ($270,000), Syracuse ($840,000), Wake Forest ($3.07 million) and Duke ($6.72 million).
Quote:
While nearly all of the automatic-qualifying BCS conference schools' football programs finished in the black, the non-automatic BCS conference schools weren't nearly as profitable. Of the non-automatic qualifying BCS conference schools, excluding Army, Navy and Air Force, whose financial figures are not part of the Equity in Athletics study, only 17 of the 51 made a profit.
In other words, 78/119 FBS programs are profitable(with one breaking even), at least as of the end of the 2009 season(in the heart of the recession). Most big time football programs(especially those in the BCS) do make money.

FALSE. Not all programs are cash flow positive.

I shouldn't have said most. Look at JLaw's post.

The point still stands that there aren't a ton of schools flush with football cash to throw at a bunch of players. Only the top dogs have huge profits.

I'm actually surprised any team loses money in football.

A very interesting piece that I think kind of explains why so many people believe the current system is less than desirable for everyone:

http://mgoblog.com/content/monocle-o...ngerous-levels

Basically, major sports revenue is growing significantly faster than college tuition, yet the number of scholarships is not increasing nor is the value of scholarships increasing at a comparable rate. I'm not suggesting they be paid, but that changes to the limits of scholarships be amended.
