Default Schaub to Houston

Apparently for our second rounder.

Thoughts?

Edit: We gave up 75 picks for him.

I hate this trade...gave up wayyyy too much for an unproven player...I dont think too highly of Rick Smith and Gary Kubiak right now.

Yes, this trade does look like it favored the Falcons. You guys may feel like this is a terrible trade. Although at this point I don't think Schuab has proved anything to make him worth what you gave up for him, this doesn't mean he won't turn out to be great.

And if he turns out to be very good, which is a strong possibility, the Texans will be going places. And if that doesn't make you feel any better, the Falcons still have Vick who may or may not pan out. Maybe this is a trade the Falcons will regret later. Maybe it won't. It's hard not to be judgemental at this point, but be optomistic. Texan fans have been through a lot the last couple years. Maybe this is the start to something new.

If it's any consolation. I really like what I've seen from Matt Schaub, and he's a perfect fit for Kubiak's offense. I think he will be an upgrade over Carr, for a certainty. I think Houston conceded to Atlanta's asking price, because they wanted to get him in the fold, as soon as possible.

So now having swapped picks from 10 to 8, what direction do you think your team is going to go on draft day? Was that move up just extra insurance to be in better position to select Landry?

I would say the two most likely candidates for the Falcons are Laron Landry, and Adrian Peterson.

how can shaub fit better then carr in the system shacub isnt as mobile and that is what kubiak likes. He wants his qbs to bootleg schaub cant do that as well as carr, but everyone wants him gone so they got their wish and now were going to see how bad david really was. Is it the line and the bad running game or him? Schaub better play above average next year becasue we gave up 2 2nd's.

It seems like the Texans keep trying to piss off their fans. 2 seconds and move down two spots in the first. Rick Smith is trash. What a moron.

Pat Kirwan reported, a few weeks ago, that a mid-1st value is what Atlanta would command. He quoted several personnel guys from around the league. Rick Smith, Gary Kubiak, gave up what they had to. No more, no less.

Here is the article, written at the time of the combine;

Quote:
It appears that as coaches got done watching the Combine workouts, some of them rekindled their thinking about Matt Schaub. Be assured, Atlanta will put the high tender on Matt at week's end, but that doesn't mean Atlanta will require a first- and third-round pick as compensation in a trade.

The Falcons will not give the guy away, but after evaluating the 2007 prospects' performances, Schaub probably is no worse than third in this class, and for a few teams, he's probably second. As one personnel director with an interest in a quarterback said, "The Falcons know that Schaub's value is probably close to the 15th pick in the first round, but putting a deal together that works for all parties is the tricky part."

Here are a few ideas that are floating around Indianapolis this weekend.

1. A team in the top 14 spots in the draft could trade down close to the 15th spot, pick up an extra pick or two, and then trade for Schaub and get the other players they need with the extra picks. Keep in mind, Schaub would have to negotiate a long-term deal with a new club. I'm not sure the Falcons will ever trade Schaub, but if a team calls with a pick close to No. 15, they might sit up and listen. I wonder if teams like Minnesota, Houston or Miami would consider this idea?

2. It can be problematic for a team to get another team to trade with them in the draft in order to position them for a maneuver like Scenario No. 1, but using a second-round pick this season and a sliding-scale pick in the 2008 draft eliminates a third party. Consider the same three teams mentioned above put a package together that includes this year's second-round pick and a second next year that could escalate to a first if Schaub hits certain benchmarks. For instance, a second-round pick in 2008 appreciates to a first-round pick if Matt starts 10 or more games, throws a minimum of 15 touchdown passes and gains more than 2,000 yards. The Falcons would have a hard time turning that deal down, the trading club keeps this year's first-round pick and I'm sure the team would be comfortable parting with its 2008 selection based on performance.

3. Schaub could throw a monkey wrench in the whole thing if an interested club puts out a low-ball offer. He could decide to just sit in a Falcons uniform for one year on a high tender and then hit the street as an unrestricted free agent in 2008 with the opportunity to let any of the other 31 clubs compete for his services. The Falcons know they will receive no compensation for Schaub if he walks in 2008, and there's no way the Falcons would protect themselves in 2008 with a $12 million franchise tag.

Based on conversations I have heard around Indianapolis this weekend, it will be interesting to see what happens with the Matt Schaub situation.
Let's not act as if Houston gave too much. They did what was necessary.

Getting Schaub wasn't necessary. He's 2 years younger than Carr. He's unproven, and I really don't like him at all, mostly because of all the hype. We have too many needs to be trading away draft picks, especially high ones.

The Texans were going to use a day-1 pick on a QB anyway, if they didn't trade for Schaub. At least with Schaub, there is tangible proof that he can play in the NFL, unlike any rookie.

I agree with America on this one. This was a horrible move on our part. Shiver like you said we were probably going to take a qb day one anyway, but the soonest we would take someone would probably be the third round, and we could have at least gotten our hands on some of the great defensive talent available in round 2.

I really don't see how this is a horrible move. There is no talent drop off between the 8th and 10th pick. I'm sure LaRon Landry won't be available at 10, but from other boards I've been reading the Vikings are interested in taking him at 7 anyways. We were going to use the 2nd round pick on either Kevin Kolb or Troy Smith. So this way we get a QB with NFL experience vs. a rookie with absolutely NO NFL experience. If you will...look back a couple of years ago when Matt Schaub started against the defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots. He threw for 298 yards and 3 touchdowns. That is a very hard thing to do against that defense.

Also remember; there are no garuntees that you're going to get a great player with any pick in the draft. We were very fortunate that Demeco Ryans became the player that he was. But not all second rounders turn out like that. Besides, we have plenty of time to recover next years second round pick and could possibly get this years back.

The reason Houston had to throw in the future pick, and the swap, Oakland had the 33rd pick on the table. So for the Texans to get 'their guy,' that's what they needed to do. Otherwise, hello Brady Quinn...

I Just Want To Tell The Die Hard Texans Fans:

I Live In Texas, And I Have Wanted The Texans To Be My Second Favorite Team For A Long Time. I Wasnt Against The Mario Williams Draft Pick, Just Where They Drafted Him At. Surely They Could Have Traded Down A Little And Still Got Him.

Having Said That, This Team Really Irritates Me To The Point That I Cant Like Them The Way I Want To. They Do Some Things That I Like, But The Majority Of The Things They Do Leave Me Kicking My Dog!

Hope Yall Dont Take This The Wrong Way, But I Am Starting To Pull For The Texans The Way I Pull For The Freakin Houston Cougars. I Want Them To Do Something, But I Cant See How They Can.

Traded down to where? All indications were that the Saints were going to select Mario with the #2 pick after we selected Reggie. Nobody was going to trade up to #1 for Vince Young, since a good many teams like Leinart better and several others didn't want anything to do with a QB. Heck, even if we had swapped picks with the Saints, we could have lost Mario. My guess is we thought that was a real option considering how high they were on him.

This trade doesn't get me excited but I'm certainly going to give Schuab a chance. Moving from 8 to 10 really isn't that big of an issue. We need help in a number of areas so it's not like we might get in a bad sitaution. And now we have room to use a later pick on another lineman - somthing we desparetly need. David Carr wasn't going anywhere here and Schaub has plenty of talent and should bring a high level of confidence with him.

I agree, this trade isn't really something that I jumped for joy over when I heard the news. The last backup quarterback that was in the situation that Schaub is in now was AJ Feeley, and god knows he sucked. I am not going to write off Schaub by any means, I just think we gave a little much for a so far career backup with only a handful of starts in his career. I also think that those second round picks were very valuabe. The second round produces many great players perenially and for a team in the situation that the Texans are in the second round can become a gold mine.(Demeco Ryans) Although I guess I still think that we should have given up less to get Schaub, I am excited to see him play next year, he definately has potential. And I don't know if I am the only person with this feeling, but i am also excited to watch David Carr next year where ever he ends up. I still think that he has enough talent to be a solid starter for a team for a couple of years.

When this trade went down I was really super pissed, I wanted to post, but I though if I have nothing positive to contribute... well you know. Anyways now that I look at it it's not so bad. Alot of people wanted to trade down so I think of it like this we traded down. We didn't get anything, but our staff likely was gonna pick a QB anyways so I guess it's like we only lost next yr.s' second rd. pick. Hopefully we do great this yr. and that pick doesn't sting us as much. I can't say I really like everything that transpired, but we could still trade down a few spots and get another second rd. pick this yr. or next. Ey, I'm trying to be positive so don't get on me for this.
