Yeah I like it a lot too. 3 extremely good tests against the 49ers, Ravens, and Texans but for the most part should be a schedule that they can run through pretty easily for 12 or more wins.

1 good team on the road. That could be another 12+ win season.

Add another WR who actually makes plays and improve the defense and we're ready to roll in 2012 it seems.

Undecided
Deion Branch

Definitely Let Walk
Shaun Ellis (retire)
RB Kevin Faulk (retire)
DB Nate Jones
S Bret Lockett
CB Antwaun Molden
DL Gerard Warren (retire)

Those are the numbers for this season. If you want a detailed analysis of who is getting what next year here is a link for you.

http://nyjetscap.com/Patriots/patriots2012.php

The number they have committed to players on the roster for next year is $85,187,806 with an additional $9,732,264 in dead money for a total of $94,920,070 in commitments for 2012.

The cap should be roughly around $120 million next year.

The relatively likely cuts of Light, Ocho, Barrett, and Wright will lead roughly to an additional $10,000,000 in savings as well.

Also if you want an additional smile, navigate your way to the Jets cap commitments for 2012 too. Lets just say it's a little more than the Patriots.

Well...it all looks pretty good until you really look at it.

I put a star next to the player that would be starting on that roster. There are a total of 42 players listed here.

Code:
QB (2)
Tom Brady*
Ryan Mallett

RB (3)
Danny Woodhead
Shane Vereen
Steven Ridley*

WR (3)
Chad Ochocinco*
Tiquan Underwood
Julian Edelman*

TE (2)
Rob Gronkowski*
Aaron Hernandez*

OL (12)
Matt Light
Logan Mankins*
Brian Waters*
Nate Solder*
Sebastian Vollmer*
Ryan Wendell*
David Thomas
Rich Ohrnberger
Nick McDonald
Marcus Cannon
Danny Aiken
Kyle Hix

DL (5)
Vince Wilfork*
Mike Wright
Ron Brace*
Myron Pryor
Brandon Deaderick*

OR (outside rushers) (2)
Jermaine Cunningham*
Rob Ninkovich*

LB (4)
Jerod Mayo*
Brandon Spikes*
Dane Fletcher
Jeff Tarpinian
Christian Cox

CB (4)
Devin McCourty*
Ras-I Dowling
Kyle Arrington*
Malcolm Williams

S (3)
Patrick Chung*
Josh Barrett
Sergio Brown*

ST (2)
Stephen Gostkowski*
Zoltan Mesko*
Counting guys that would be cut, they're like 22 players short of 53.

The FO has a ton of work ahead of them this off-season. And that's not a ton of cap room to do it with.

Dead money counts towards next year's cap.

I adjusted the list with cuts and re-signings. After cuts and assuming the cap is ~$125m (Football Outsiders projection), the Pats are sitting at $44.1m with a few big re-signings.

Code:
Re-Sign
QB Brian Hoyer* (2nd Round RFA Tender)
RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis (depending on how much he thinks he's worth)
WR Deion Branch
WR Wes Welker (~$9m)
OL Dan Connolly
DE Andre Carter
DL Kyle Love**
LB Gary Guyton
LB Tracy White
CB Antwaun Molden
ST Matthew Slater

QB (3)
Tom Brady*
Brian Hoyer
Ryan Mallett

RB (4)
BenJarvus Green-Ellis
Danny Woodhead
Shane Vereen
Steven Ridley*

WR (3)
Wes Welker*
Deion Branch*
Julian Edelman

TE (2)
Rob Gronkowski*
Aaron Hernandez*

OL (9)
Matt Light
Logan Mankins*
Brian Waters*
Nate Solder*
Sebastian Vollmer*
Ryan Wendell
Dan Connolly*
Rich Ohrnberger
Marcus Cannon

DL (5)
Vince Wilfork*
Kyle Love*
Ron Brace
Myron Pryor
Brandon Deaderick*

OR (outside rushers) (3)
Jermaine Cunningham
Rob Ninkovich*
Andre Carter*

LB (5)
Jerod Mayo*
Brandon Spikes*
Dane Fletcher
Gary Guyton
Tracy White

CB (4)
Devin McCourty*
Ras-I Dowling
Kyle Arrington*
Antwaun Molden

S (3)
Patrick Chung*
Josh Barrett
Sergio Brown*

ST (3)
Stephen Gostkowski*
Zoltan Mesko*
Matthew Slater
The team needs are
3xWR with one being a stud
1 TE (blocking backup)
1 DL (1 GOOD DL)
1 OR
1 CB
1 S (Starter)
1 LS

So the BIG needs appear to be S, WR, OR, DL (probably in that order). And they have 6 draft picks. I think those 4 needs can be hit in the first two rounds and the other two picks are probably best-used to grab a CB and the 3rd TE.

They hit those spots with the draft, and they're saving a ton of cash for contract extensions.

Nice to see us with a good amount of cap space in a good FA year.
On another note, played some NFL 2k5 today and boy do I miss having a great defense lol.

Bill O'Brien is going to be officially announced as the Penn State head coach in the next few days. I'm not a great fan of the move if I'm a Penn State fan. O'Brien has been steady, but for a guy with no expedience as a head coach and without a particularly distinguished track record...meh. Not a great fan of what he's done around here, as we've struggled to find meaningful production from outside receivers. We're good enough to make up for it with the tight ends and Tom Brady...but he hasn't really done anything to stand out one way or the other.

From the Patriots fan perspective; I really, really, really don't like this. His contract was up at the end of the year and he was probably gone either way(It was very possible he would have gone to another team, even as an OC), but I defiantly want everyone all in for the playoff run. Between trying to lay the ground work for taking over, smoozing with Alumni, and hiring a staff for Penn State(luckily, recruiting is in a dead period until February...although my understanding of that aspect of college football is a little limited, as I understand now, there may be some things that go on), there's going to be a whole lot more on his plate than helping with preparing a winning gameplan for a playoff game. Just horrible, horrible timing and not something I wanted to deal with.

In terms who who steps up and fills the void next year; Chad O'Shea is the leading internal candidate to step into the role, although we may just go with what we did before officially naming O'Brien and go without a named coordinator(which again, makes me leery of how much involvement he had)...or we go out and get Josh. I'm really all in on the last option, to be honest. McDaniel's wasn't officially let go in St. Louis and still may hang on there, but a new coach might not want him hanging around there, especially if they go with someone with an offensive background. He still has strong organizational ties, runs a similar system(one I like better, personally), and hasn't burned any bridges with our organization. Tom has been on record saying he really loved working with him, so the most important requirement in all of this is seemingly covered as well.

You worry too much about everything EE lol.

Obrien is a professional and as Weis did he will be able to manage both jobs for the time being I am sure. He knows winning a superbowl will intensely aid his work at Penn State.

I'm not going to assume that. Just because it worked with Weis doesn't guarantee it will with O'Brien. It certainly shows that it's possible, but this is a different situation, different team, and a different season. The Weis thing concerned me a whole lot at the time as well. It's great that it didn't affect things then, but I don't know how you can be anything but concerned when a coach takes on additional, outside responsibilities anytime, let alone during a playoff run.

You always assume worst case.

Sure, it could hinder him and effect him negatively.
It could also motivate him and encourage him to work harder.

It's silly to speculate because we really cannot know, and it could be good or bad, 50/50.
