Maryland's Kenny Tate Out for Season

Maryland OLB / S Kenny Tate will undergo surgery for an unknown injury and miss the rest of the season. The recovery time is estimated at six to nine months. Tate will seek a medical redshirt so he can return to the Terrapins in 2012. Tate was considered to be a potential early round pick for the 2012 NFL Draft. It might be for the best as Tate was not having a good year.

He was being mocked in the first round in the beginning of the year, and now he's fallen to the point where he may be UDFA.

Terps just announced the hiring of Brian Stewart, former Dallas Cowboys Defensive Coordinator. A lot of rumor that they will now be switching to the 3-4 and all but positive that Kenny Tate will be moved back to the starting safety position next year.

Coach Edsall really screwed Tate over by moving him to 'backer.
I hate when college coaches don't at least consider when a player is regarded as a top prospect at his given position, that maybe it's best to let him finish his career there.

It would be like taking LSU's corner Claiborne and moving him to WR.

There was a lot of talk that Tate was going to be one of those Darnell Bing type safeties that would have to move to LB in the pro's

After the one year trial run, I'd say that's probably not actually happening though

I'll be honest I was definitely one of those people who thought he would have to move to LB in the pros anyway. A lot of people were really high on him in coverage but I always thought he was kind of mediocre. He impressed me the most when he blitzed and when he played in the box, I thought he'd work pretty well as a WILL backer in college and at the next level.

For what it's worth Tate looked really good for his first game back this week. Ended up playing twice as many snaps as he was planned to but was playing so well that they kept him in. Will be interested to watch him as season progresses and he gets back into a rhythm.

technically linebacker but appeared to be more of a rover to me. was around the line of scrimmage a lot but also in coverage some.

Very well done, Shazor was never moved to linebacker in college though like Tate was, or at least I do not think he was. Seems like ever since Kenny Tate was moved to linebacker he has been injured and has not played great, wish he would have stayed at safety honestly.


Nick Moody is another that was moved to linebacker in college, not liking that choice, great athlete but would have loved to seem him stick it out at safety. And based on Terrence Brooks performance against Clemson maybe he should have stuck around at safety.

But Florida State likes those small fast linebackers, but interesting to see how guys like Telvin Smith and Terrance Smith do prospect wise in the future at such a light weight for a linebacker.

Corey Nelson of Oklahoma is another small safety type linebacker but he is putting on weight but not sure he won't be tried to move him back to safety.

Harrison Smith on Notre Dame started at linebacker and was actually moved back to safety and clearly that was a good choice to make.

Darian Stewart and Antonio Allen were the 'spur' on South Carolina, linebacker safety player and both play at safety in the NFL.

Then you have Terence Garvin on WV, who has complete linebacker size but would have loved to see him play as a natural SS instead of their "rover" linebacker safety player. Interesting to see what position he goes to in the NFL.

Eddie Pleasant of last season, had a linebacker body and played a rover type also on Oregon, but is getting a shot at safety in the NFL thankfully.



Myron Rolle is another, played safety all throughout his time at FSU, too slow in reaction time for safety in the NFL, tried at linebacker and that did not work out.

Another would be Cody Grimm, played basically linebacker in college, guess you could call in a rover though too. But because of his size is moved to safety in the NFL and is doing ok, still hanging around.


One player I can remember where they were a safety in college, moved to linebacker in the NFL worked out would be Cato June from Michigan. But not many others come to mind.




Love the increase in speed but if they are not big enough that is a huge issue. They can do that game in college, not so easy in the NFL.

Thomas Davis was a safety at Georgia and was taken in the first round as a Will. He has been very good for the Panthers.

He won't be a high pick but he will be drafted as a promising hybrid type..not sold on him but fits the mold of the speed-oriented nickel defense that doesn't have the 'optionable' OLB as its achilles heel.

He's the type of guy the Giants draft in the 4th as BPA and develop into their system as a package player

Yes. I couldn't help but lol when I saw others mentioning guys like Davis or June while missing the biggest success story of them all.

You are right, my mistake, I never did actually watch a game of him at New Mexico however so he never came to mind.

And I did forget Thomas Davis also, that was a good switch as well from SS to outside linebacker.


Karlos Dansby is another I believe, but I think he was moved to linebacker in college but started at safety for them at the start of his career.

Will Herring is another, played safety then moved up to linebacker in college and is a linebacker in the NFL and was a decent one a few years back.



So I guess on a closer look it is a little more common than I originally thought, but there is a long list of other guys who switched and could not make that move.

Any word on Kenny Tate's draft prospects??
I haven't heard a word about him other than during game broadcasts of terrapin football last season.

It sucks that new HC Randy Edsall took UMD's best defensive player and switched him to OLB, which I don't think he transitioned to well.

I still think Tate's best position is safety and believe he could be a player similar to Kam Chancellor in the pros.

I think everyone is on the same train of thought with why did Edsall do what he did with Tate....

If you asked two years ago - people would look at you crazy if you said Tate would make it out of the first round
