We know how methodical Baalke was in FA after last offseason. If they get Alex, Goldson, and Brooks locked up before FA I'll be happy. The whole offseason builds to the draft, for the 49ers front office, so I would prefer they nail that over FA.

Free agency stars are overrated anyways. They never workout like people think they will. Well, 90% of the time.

Signing one or two solid guys....like we did last year can defintely put you over the top as a team. But sigining a slew of high-profile FAs......like the Eagles did is bound to mess up chemistry and locker room dynamics.

Important part in the front 7 so its good he stays. Only OLB i would no doubt play every down. Aldon isnt that great in coverage and Parys isnt that good of a rusher so i must say its a good thing.

According to ESPN's Josina Anderson the max value of the deall is $44.5 million.

YES!!! Brooks was the main guy who I thought that we would lose. If true, im happy and things are going good. Just hope that Goldson can be re-signed so we dont have to use the franchise tag on him. Then, of course Alex Smith and hopefully Ginn and Snyder. Still hoping they let Rogers walk and use that money towards a WR in FA and I'll be happy.

Brooks locked up at a reasonable rate for a starter, especially a pass rusher. I hope he'll get into the double digit sack totals next season. With him and Aldon, where does that leave Parys? I'm sure he'll get approached about taking a paycut soon, if he hasn't already.

SO PUMPED about Brooks re-signing! This is such good news for our defense. This may be the best front seven in the NFL

On the surface it looks like we overpaid, but the contract could contain a lot of fluff. I imagine more details will come out soon. It's nice to lock up our most complete starter.

As it relates to the draft/FA....this puts us out of the bidding for Mario Williams for sure, and most likely a 1st round OLB as well. I also wonder if Brooks/Rogers are an either/or scenario, or if we can re-sign them both.

Excellent news. I'm so glad we have Brooks back. He was the one guy I really didn't want us to lose. This was the first time in like a decade we had a good front seven and more importantly, a good pass rush. So it's nice to know we are keeping that intact. Brooks is a beast.

Brooks back in the fold is a great sign. Now we can use the draft to grab some young depth guys. And the contract is very fair to both parties. Kudos Baalke. Re-signing Spillman and Brooks is a very good start to our off-season.

Extremely happy about re-signing Brooks. On rotoworld.com, it says 6yrs/$44.5m with $17.5 signing bonus. An average of $7.4m a year isnt bad at all because there's no one else in FA except for Williams and he would probably want at least $5m more. Of course, I still think that Williams goes to a 4-3 team to be a starting DE. Just have to wait and see what the other details of the Brooks contract are but I would have been willing to give Brooks $8m a year so less, is definitely better. Im guessing the guaranteed money is now and next year with huge base salaries the last three years.

The contract is max 44 mil. I would gather its heavy backloaded and is really around 4-5 mil a year. With the kickers and incentives, would avg to around 7 mil, if he meets those requirements. The key is the 17.5 guantanteed. Thats the main number and a steal really for a very good 3-4 OLB, still in his prime. No question, Brooks could have scored a more lucrative deal if he hit the market. Even if he plays out of his mind, its doubtful he'll still be around to recieve the max(he'll be 34 if he reaches the final year of the deal). So maybe early in the deal, with stellar play, yes the 7 mil per year is a reachable figure. But if he's the steady, solid contributor he was last year, more around 5-6 mil a year. Will have to wait until the details of the the deal are made public but I believe its something along those lines.

Either way, a damn good re-signing and keeps our front seven intact, adds more of a pass rush to the starting seven and adds better depth with Haralson coming off the bench. We can now draft an OLB in the late rounds for special teams. Inside, have to wait and see what happens with Grant but im hoping that they re-sign Costanzo and to a lesser extent, Gooden in case Grant leaves.

Interesting quote from Brooks...

Quote:
Q: Why did you decide not to wait to test the market and see what you could get from other teams? Why did you sign now with the Niners?

Brooks: I donít know. Just something was telling me to sign here. I feel like this is where I should be. These are the people that gave me a chance to go out there and get this contract. From the time I got into the NFL I felt like I should have been starting. And coaches were always giving me an excuse like, ĎWell he doesnít know the defense, he canít learn the defense.í Thatís a lie. Thatís always been a lie. We practice the same things every day. How can I not remember what I practiced every day? Iím just happy to get this chance at just having a coaching staff that believed in me to go out there and showcase my talent. So, that also plays a big part in that.
http://sfo.scout.com/2/1162892.html

I remember when reports surfaced that Brooks had trouble picking up the defense under Nolan/Manusky. So is that a little jab at them? Or is he talking about his time with the Bengals? Normally guys would just give a tpyical PR answer there, being happy they just signed a big contract. But he made it a point to refute that notion. I always found that hard to understand, being that he played in a pro-styled defense in college, having a myrid of roles and he never missed a beat. Just found that quote rather interesting.

6 six 37 million with the first year 2,85 million couting for the cap. Seems like a great deal to me.

He probably just didnt fit in the Bengals or Niners scheme back then. Of course, it was Nolan/Manusky who I hated and Singletary was right behind them. So happy, that all of them are long gone.

WR DeSean Jackson has been franchised by the Eagles and Steelers management says that they will NOT franchise Wallace and instead, place the first round tender on him.

What looked like an awesome list of FA WR's is going to look average at best by Monday because I still see V. Jax and Bowe getting franchised. Possibly Steve Johnson too.

And yes, im actually happy Jackson got franchised since I have wanted Wallace more than him since day one.

I doubt VJax will get franchised - 13M cap hit for the season if the Chargers apply the tag. They haven't made any motions like the Steelers to clear cap room (Chargers reportedly have around 9-10M in cap space).

Bowe I can see getting franchised.

Yeah the maximum yearly salary breakdown has come out. This deal is absolutely amazing for the 49ers.

2012 - $2.85 Million
2013 - $6.65 Million
2014 - $7.50 Million
2015 - $8.35 Million
2016 - $6.35 Million
2017 - $5.30 Million

2015 is the only questionable number. By that time contract averages and the cap will be much higher and he'll either be worth it or he'll be a cap casualty. So he's a bargain for at least 3 seasons.

Yeah, great signing by the 49ers. I think the same will be done with Goldson too. And regardless of which top tier WR they go after, im going to say that it will be similar but with more money next year when the cap goes up to $150m and large base salaries.

Probably not but then again, I wouldnt be surprised if they did franchise him by Monday or work out a long term deal. If they let Jackson go, they mine as well trade Gates, Rivers and rebuild because there's no one else there on offense. Its amazing that Rivers even does as good stat wise as he has done.

Bowe is a guarantee franchise tag if he doesnt re-sign.

And here's something I was thinking of -

What if SF is letting Rogers test FA and they sign Carr to a long term deal? Or even Nicks/Grubbs to replace Snyder at RG? Honestly, I wouldnt be surprised. Not really happy but not surprised.

With Dielman retiring, it should free up cap space for the franchise tag (if they decide to add it).

Obviously, the Chargers will be looking for a long term deal, which would benefit their team more (cheaper than franchise tag, stay under cap, don't need to cut any players).

I want a upgrade at RG in the worst possible way. Probably more than I want a WR. But I dont want to give a huge contract to Grubbs or Nicks. I'd take Evan Mathis or Jake Scott as a cap friendly upgrade from Synder.
