OK so the franchise is with Spencer. Better than a long term deal.
Good to see Griffin is getting the Franchise tag from the Titans. That just means Carr will have competition in FA. If he were the only top CB in FA, his asking price could've gotten out of hand. At least now teams looking for CB help will have some leverage in working out a deal with Carr.

Hate spending 8.8 on spencer, but at least we have not committed long term to him. We could simply be renting him for a year.

I'm sure that negotiations for a long term deal got hung up because the Cowboys and Spencer's camp did not see eye to eye on his value. So if he steps it up this season (which I predict due to the other improvements made on defense), then there's a chance we get a better read on him.

I'm done complaining about him after this post, but nothing about signing Spencer to a 1, 2, 3, 4,.... year deal excites me.

Don't scare me like that. We franchised him. He did not get a long term deal.

It just takes $9mi off the table to play with this year. Whatever, moving on!

Anyone have a final list of franchise tag tenders? I'm more so looking to see if Chris Meyers got tagged.

Dez Bryant just tweeted that he is about to hang out with Perrish Cox. Maybe he'll put in a good word. Cox is from Waco, Texas. Low risk, high reward. Would be a great #4 CB and can play if somehow goes down.

Archer dropped this today.

For those wondering how this affects the Cowboys’ ability to sign players in free agency, don’t be too worried. They can still do whatever it is they want by moving some money around. The Cowboys were $12.6 million under the cap before the Spencer tag. The Cowboys can create about $8.6 million in space by the already agreed upon reworkings of the deals of Doug Free and Orlando Scandrick. By cutting Terence Newman, they could save either $4 million or $6 million. They can create more room by reworking DeMarcus Ware’s contract, too.

Yeah we have a ton of room to maneuver. We'll still make moves come free agency.

I'm more worried about spending it wisely than anything else.

Scott has us taking Barron in his latest Mock today. Why do I have a feeling this will happen?

Amen to that. Although I give Garrett a lot more trust in that department than our last few regimes.

The same Garrett that paid Marcus Spears and Orlando Scandrick?

It wouldn't make ANY sense. Barron would be a SS in our defense and Sensy is not a FS. -_-

Because it's a terrible nightmare. That's why.
lol. Barron isn't really a bad player, I just don't have a man crush on him.

Meh. Both were signed at a level at or lower than market value. We had to have someone more than Jenkins on the roster this year at CB. Spears falls into the same category as Spencer. Not flashy but fits the role he's been casted in to a T. In his case be the best run defender on his side of the ball.

Spears got starters money, but isn't a starter. Scandrick's cap hit was $7,700,000 last year. $4M+ the rest of the way out. I would disagree that he earned that, and last season was disasterous for him.
C'mon now. Let's not be the fan base that defends every move the organization makes. This team is NOTORIOUS for dolling out bad contracts. Garrett being promoted HC didn't change that because I doubt he gets involved at all on a contract level.

I'm not understanding the problem with Scandrick's contract at all. We had one CB on the roster for this season and took an initial hit (when we had cap space) to minimize a hit later. His contract for a slot CB is not terrible and hardly cause for kicking and screaming.
Spears I'll hand you although the organization loves his ability against the run. I still don't believe 19.2 over 5 years (3.84/yr) is as terrible of a deal that you are making it out to be...
On the same token lets not be the fans that buy into media perception and regurgitate back here.
