CARDINALS DEFEAT TEXANS IN OVERTIME, WIN SUPERBOWL XLVII
Fitzgerald has a huge day as the Cardinals win.
It was a Superbowl for the ages. "One of the best ever played" said some long time sports writers in attendance.
This one had it all. Both starting QBs, Manning and Schaub, threw for over 400 yards, and both of their top WRs, Fitzgerald and Andre Johnson, caught for over 150 and 2 TDs each. Arian Foster had a great 80 yard TD run where his o-line opened up some great running lanes. And of course, who could forget Patrick Peterson's epic 90 yard spinning, diving, juking, field-reversing punt return TD.
Overall, there were 8 lead changes and the game was tied several more times until Arizona kicker Jay Feely knocked through a 35 yard game winner in OT, clinching the 41-38 victory for the Cardinals.
Peyton Manning had a stellar season, winning Comeback Player of the Year as well as his 5th MVP award in leading the Cardinals to the #1 seed in the NFC. Things were looking grim for the Cardinals when he was blown up while throwing by Houston's JJ Watt, causing the pass to sail and get picked off by Danieal Manning. The Texans went up 38-35 with just under 3 minutes remaining in the game, but Peyton rallied his troops and drove down for the game tying FG, sending the game into OT for the first time in Superbowl history.
The Texans started off hot in overtime, with Arian Foster running hard and Matt Schaub hitting Andre Johnson to get into Cardinals territory. But Calais Campbell, who received a contract extension just last offseason to remain with the team, tipped a Schaub pass intended for Owen Daniels that was picked off by Adrian Wilson and returned deep into Texans territory.
The Cardinals ran a few times to center the FG and Feely knocked it through.
This will surely be a game that forever lives in the hearts and minds of NFL fans everywhere. "Epic" is truly the only way it can be described.
