Oh you can find players like Wallace in the 3rd round or in other rounds BUT the %'s are not in anyone's favor. Between 2005-2009 (WR's with at least 3 years to be evaluated for discussion purpose) here are the 3rd round WR's taken :

2005 :

3 68 Courtney Roby
3 83 Chris Henry
3 96 Brandon Jones

2006:

3 78 Travis Wilson
3 82 Derek Hagan
3 84 Brandon Williams
3 90 Maurice Stovall
3 95 Willie Reid

2007 :

3 73 Jacoby Jones
3 74 Yamon Figurs
3 75 Laurent Robinson
3 76 Jason Hill
3 78 James Jones
3 79 Mike Walker

2008 :

3 70 Earl Bennett
3 81 Early Doucet
3 84 Harry Douglas
3 95 Mario Manningham
3 97 Andre Caldwell
3 80 Paul Williams
3 99 Johnnie Lee Higgins

2009 :

3 82 Derrick Williams
3 83 Brandon Tate
3 84 Mike Wallace
3 85 Ramses Barden
3 87 Patrick Turner
3 91 Deon Butler
3 99 Juaquin Iglesias

If you look at the first or second round the %'s are a little higher for the 2nd round and even better for the first but even then it is less than 50 (in the first).

Odds are not in our favor, when turning to the draft. While Baalke did a very good job last year he won't always hit on all his picks so there is a higher % chance we lose on the gamble of drafting our guy.

With Wallace you have a 25 year old player (thus a 5-6 contract) would allow us to soak up all of his prime years, a player who only has 3 seasons under his belt (thus he has yet to fully reach his potential) and a player who brings speed and playmaking ability to our WR core which are 2 things we sorely lack. Oh and his development as a pro is MUCH farther along than whoever we would draft.

But again, it is rare for something like that to happen. Most rookie wideouts who are not top 10 talents usually don't become #1's right out the gate.

Capt Comeback is throwing to Randy Moss today and 49ers could be close to a deal with Alex.
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/49ers/2...n-dotted-line/
Quote:
Then again, might Alex Smith be around to throw passes?

Smith, who was in Arizona over the weekend for Kurt Warner’s charity event, could be on the verge of signing a three-year contract to return (as expected) to the only team that’s employed him.

Smith told CBS 5 that he is not commanding a five-year contract and instead both sides are working out the details of a three-year offer.

Last summer, Smith returned for seventh season under a one-year deal that paid him $6.5 million, including $2.5 million in incentives during a career-best year that culminated with a berth in the NFC Championship Game.

Free agency begins at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Will Smith be on the market? Will Moss, who is able to sign anytime after sitting out last season?
If Harbaugh likes what he sees I have a hard time seeing Moss leave without a deal.

High praise from Michael Lombardi for Josh Morgan:
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d...eeagent-period
Quote:
When free agency begins, big-name players will fly off the market, but you should also expect some lesser-known guys to go as quick -- and become very wealthy in their own right. For example, wide receiver Josh Morgan is a hot name right now. He is hot because he will cost less than some of the more recognizable wideouts, like Vincent Jackson and Marques Colston, yet might play as well. Morgan has the potential to become a star if he goes to the right team and can stay healthy. He only started five games last year for the San Francisco 49ers before a broken leg put him on injured reserve for the rest of the season. Yet his talent is undeniable and teams will pay well for his services. He will be off the market before Sunday.

Alex Smith, agent working on details of three-year contract offer from 49ers

Quarterback Alex Smith is happy with the three-year deal the San Francisco 49ers have offered him. In a report by CBS5, Smith denies that he has demanded a five-year deal, saying he is content with the 49ers' offer.

San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Alex Smith told CBS5’s Kim Coyle tonight that reports of his demand for a five-year contract are “completely false,” and that he’s happy with the three year deal offered by the 49ers. Smith said his agent and the 49ers are working out the details and that he expects to sign a new contract with San Francisco.

The only issue at the moment are the numbers of the contract. Smith and his agent Tom Condon are "working out the details" and once that is settled, Smith will re-sign with the team. If Smith can sign his new contract before 1 p.m. on Tuesday, he will avoid free agency.

So, basically every negative post from the past week was based upon false information.

Gotta love the offseason, and the reactive nature of fanaticism.

Don't get me wrong, I feel that exploring Wallace should be done. But the idea that the 49ers can't get tremendous WR play out of the draft is simply a falsehood.

Not technically. He was pretty much the slot guy, 3rd WR his rookie year. Holmes was still there and Hines was still a effective starter. He didnt become a starter until after Holmes was traded that off-season.

But there are countless examples of it happening. And really, that isn't point of drafting them.....so they are #1 WR out the gate. We dont need a rookie to be a starter from jump, especially if we re-sign Morgan and add another WR through free agency. We just need them to be effective when they're number is called and gradually get better as the season progresses enough to the point where we could see them as a potential starter heading into their second year......like Wallace did in Pittsburgh and like Cully and All-Done did for us this past season.

They thought the same in Minnesota and Tennessee in 2010. Don't get ahead of ourselves.

I think his problems came from motivation. In NE, he was on a winning team. As of a few months ago, we can now refer to the Niners as such.

If we motivate him then he can definitely offer us something. I'm not certain he's still capable of doing everythng but he'll certainly stretch the field and he'd bring the sort of WR experience we haven't seen in a long time to our unit. Could also serve as a mentor to Crabs/whoever we pick up in the draft. We could always stick him in the slot and watch at the chaos he and VD cause with regard to matchup nightmares. I wonder if he'd be happy with a lesser role though?

And yet, he asked the Pats to trade him because he "didnt feel wanted" so evidently winning isn't enough either. He wont be happy in this offense. I see him going to NO. Especially with Colston and Meachem leaving. That's alot of catches and yards for someone to come in and benefit from. A guy doesn't wait for the twlight of his career then he's suddendly this team first guy. Moss still wants to show how good he is. The Saints offense would be a better place to showcase that. Which is fine by me because I rather we looked elsewhere anyway.

49ers going to pay him straight cash? Hey if Harbaugh is for it what the hell but I'm worried about him being a ticking time bomb if he isn't getting the rock. I also hope this doesn't stop SF from adding another WR through FA or high in the draft.

It can't turn out worse than the Braylon experiment...

I honestly see no downside in this. After spending a year off he is going to be motivated, and not a problem

I'm on-board. One year deal is perfect.

Kinda cool to be able to say "Randy Moss, SF 49er". That might be the best part of this. I'm not expecting the once-great Randy to show up.

My biggest concern is his run-blocking and, well, does it exist. Not sure about the fit there.

Maybe they are still eyeing Stephen Hill and want him to learn body control etc from Moss.

My biggest concern would be things like this:

One year deal + likelihood of losing Joshua Morgan

Expect more WRs in FA and draft, most certainly.

This is amazing. Three months ago, NO ONE HERE wanted Moss but now that he's signed, everyone favors the signing. WOW!!! Whatever, I could care less.

Oh I still don't want him Dan. I would have actually gone for the Mike Wallace scenario instead of this...and of course, I didn't want that either.

Just wait until Moss starts bitching.
