This is my whole argument. I will agree that Smith needs to let if fly more, but his unwillingness to "throw people open" is NOT because of his arm. Bayless was saying today that Smith can't throw it more than 15 yards. Many posters here have said similar things.

Alex Smith CAN throw it deep, and throw it deep well. He has often with Vernon Davis, and prior to that Antonio Bryant. When Smith has a comfort level with a player getting open deep he has shown the ability to do it.

Can't and hasn't are two entirely different things.

If Moss is getting open deep, Smith will hit him. I have confidence in that.

It seems to be a common feeling amongst many Niners fans. I read an entire thread about how 49ers' fans were upset that New Era is the hat company of the NFL because of all the "thugs" and "gangstas."

It must be a bit of cultural separation that exists in the Bay area. Just an assumption made on my part, being from Western Pennsylvania.

I want to see what they put out for the NFL draft. They make the fitted wide brim hats. And the traditional thing has been the rounded bill hats.

The draft hats are flat bills (5950) But they'll release 3950 (rounded) and other styles as well. It's not like you can't bend or round out a 5950 if that's your taste.

Here's the Draft Day hats...

It's not that it's impossible for them, it's just some guys don't do it well or consistently... like Smith.
Is your reading comprehension really this bad? Using that video wasn't to prove that Alex could throw it deep. He has the ability to do that. Using that video was to show he is capable of throwing a ball 60 yards in the air, which is a rarity in itself among all quarterbacks.

Yes same crowd. The same kind of people that try to act hard and probably couldn't name an offensive linemen on the team. They just wear the jersey to represent the bay area.

Moss should have waited to see where Peyton was going to play first. That would be an unreal tandem.

Come back and talk to me about Alex Smith when you've watched him play more than a few times. Until then, you sound like Skip Bayless.

He routinely hits Vernon Davis on deep throws. The WRs haven't been utilized in a deep passing game since Norv Turner was OC (Martz did, but Smith missed that season.)

The fact remains, that if he can hit Davis on deeps routes with consistency then he can hit other players that are creating separation as well.

And with Carl Nicks, Marques Colston, Robert Meachum, and Drew Brees still unsigned. Sean Payton likely to be suspended, and drafts picks likely to taken away, it's funny that you'd find an opportunity to attack the QB that knocked your team out of the playoffs. Yet you did. Well played.

Lmao, I'm not salty at all. We got beat by a good team. Score shouldn't have been as close as it was really. Alex Smith was mediocre and couldn't get the ball to his receivers even against our porous defense. Vernon Davis wasn't hit on deep routes either, he had some awesome catch and runs though.

If he can hit guys consistently, but doesn't, that's an issue. Having 1 catch of 40+ yards in the regular season is probably pretty "consistent" to you though, hahaha. Most QB's can get it 60 yards downfield, who said very few QBs can do that? Besides, Alex's physical ability isn't really in question, he's just not a very good QB.

You can keep trying to make me mad, it's probably the best feeling you can get when you know your team isn't capable of winning a superbowl, but you can keep telling yourself that Alex Smith is the guy, and keep making excuses for him forever. You guys got past us. Yippeeee, we aren't the 85 bears, and Alex's total inability to get the ball outside to his receivers murdered you and stopped you from going to the superbowl. Grats.

Oh, we signed Colston, but I'm worried about Nicks!! I hope Nicks gets resigned, but if not, it has everything to do with Alex Smith. Relevant!

Alex Smith is deathly afraid of throwing passes more than 15+ yards outside the hashmarks unless it's a single coverage fly route (one of the safer passes you can ask an NFL QB to make, btw). He is beyond afraid to make a mistake, and it's the reason the Niners offense is so stagnant and the WR's don't do anything. No amount of youtube videos of Alex Smith hitting wide open receivers downfield will convince anyone otherwise. He has zero faith in his own arm, and eventually, it's going to lead to Moss not caring anymore (or lobbying for Kaepernick).

As a fan of another good NFC team, it is just so awesome to me that Niners fans/coaches don't see that.

Now wait a minute, is he "deathly" or "beyond" afraid? Is he "beyond deathly afraid" perhaps? You seem to know Alex Smith very well. Seeing as you know he has "zero faith in his own arm".

Have fun watching your golden boy, gunslinging, "real" QB throw for 4000 yards and 25 TDs with 20+ turnovers. I'll have fun watching my 49ers making a longer playoff run than those other NFC teams. That is just so awesome to me.

Alex Smith had more 40+ yard completions than Jay Cutler last season.

But that's right, poor WR and O-Line play are a valid excuse for Jay Cutler.

Well, you got me. I used two different adverbs. I guess I know nothing about quarterbacks after all.

How about the fact that Jay Cutler has 33 in 78 games while Alex Smith is virtually equal with 29 in 70 games.

And is what official? Moss? Yes. The Hats? Yes.

I don't need to make excuses for Jay Cutler. Anyone else with a brain can do that for me with the added bonus of not looking like a total homer.

Edit: Didn't realize anyone mentioned anything about Cutler or his # of 40 yard completions either....
