First chance to get on since the draft. Overall, I am pretty happy. Think with a couple of breaks, this could be a big time draft but overall, as of right now, I say it was above-average.
1. Tannehill - Love it. There was no player at 8 worth taking over him. IMO, he should sit this entire yr and I hope they do not rush him. But, for the first time in a long time (except for Hennes 1st start vs the Jets, when I thought we might have had our guy), I feel really good about our QB future..
2. Martin - IMO, this was their biggest mistake of the draft. While I think he could be a servicable to good T, I felt getting a pass rusher like Vinny Curry at this spot made more sense.. Now, if in a yr, they do not resign Long due to the huge $$ and Martin is our starting LT, then I am mistaken. But, I really liked Curry and thought they should have gone that way..
3. Vernon - Like the pick, though he does scare me in the Merling kind of way. Talent is there, but can they get it out of him. Had to grab him there because they did not land a pass rusher in the first 2 rds...
3. Egnew - Really like the pick. See Philbin using him as Miami's version of Finley. A perfect fit for this new offense. Not worried about the blocking because that is not what he is there for..
4. Miller - LOVE the pick. Watched him all yr and I thought he was far and away the 2nd best RB in this draft and to me has almost as much upside as Richardson. (Though not nearly as tough or polished right now). Also like the fact that Ireland was clearly going BPA. That is the way good teams are made. He is a perfect complement to D Thomas if they go that way and also protection against Bush leaving after 2012...
5. Kaddu - Reading the reports here make me think that he should be a guy that could eventually blosssom into a starter especially considering Dansby's cap implications going forward. Again, he went BPA in his mind, even though the fan in me was rooting for McNutt or an OG with this pick.
6. Cunningham - Fits the suit for what they want out of a west coast WR, though again, I would have preferred McNutt. We'll see. He will have to fight for a roster spot...
7. Randall - A projection at DT, Ireland has always done pretty well in the late rds at this position and with guys like Starks and McDaniel's contracts expiring at the end of the yr, he should have a really good chance to make the team and potentially have a future here as a rotational DT..
7. Matthews - Another guy who fits the suit at WR. There is going to be a lot of competition at this position in training camp and I have read a lot of positive reports on him. Lets hope they are true.
All in all, I was really happy. Before the draft I thought Ireland needed to land 4 starters by yr 2 of their careers. I would say he accomplished that and potentially more. If Tannehill turns out to be as good as they think he can be, then this turns into the best Miami draft in a LONG time.... Lets hope so...
