After almost 9 nine months of recovery since having ACL surgery, Batch is not yet ready to participate in off season work outs with the team. Even though he feels great, he says in his tweets and blog, he's apparently not yet ready to put that knee through the rigors of an NFL workout just yet.
Ed Bouchette wrote about this today in his blog, and how this also could be a sign of Mendenhall's status for this season. (excerpt below)
Barron Batch will not practice with the rookies and some first-year players over the weekend, even though he is eligible to do so.
Batch isn’t yet ready to practice after having ACL surgery in the middle of August. So, nearly nine months later, he apparently has not been cleared to go.
It’s another reason to believe that Rashard Mendenhall might not play this season. He had surgery in mid-January. If he follows Batch’s schedule, he still won’t be ready to go in mid-October. He’ll open the season on PUP. After six weeks, he can practice for three weeks (or not, if he cannot). After those three weeks, the Steelers would have to decide whether to put him on the 53-man roster, or keep him on PUP for the rest of the season.
That means the Steelers will have the week before their Nov. 18 game against Baltimore to decide whether to activate Mendenhall or put him on the shelf for the season and, if that happens, likely never see him in a Steelers uniform again.

I wonder if the Steelers try bringing in a vet before TC.

If they think Mendy won't play they have to find another body. I don't think it's a good thing to go into the season with the options we have. But like you said theres no much out there.

I wouldn't mind taking a look at Ryan Grant or Tim Hightower either.

i think our Running Backs are fine ... Redman and Dywer can handle the load ... with Rainey being change of pace here and there ...
I'm really expecting big things from Dywer ... everytime i can remember that he got in he seems to produce really well...his main concern was coming into camp over weight , and supposedly been training with Ike Taylor in the offseason, i think he knows this is a make or break year for him

Yeah, he's always been a good runner, problem was he couldn't do anything else. Nothing on special teams, struggled with pass-pro, not particularly good hands. They kept him because as a runner, he was good, but as a complete RB he was mediocre.
FWIW, Batch is refuting what Bouchette said. Redman, Dwyer, Clay, and Rainey should hold up fine though. Redman the workhorse, Dwyer spells him, Clay the
Ower back, and Rainey the third down/receiver.

I hate to actually bring up kickers, but does anybody think that the team should look into trying out recently released Vikings kicker Ryan Longwell?

No. He's pretty much done IMO.
