I'm inclined to agree. Not that great, and not really close.

Yep, I definitely agree. Really disappointed. They tried to fit way too much stuff in one episode.

The only thing I was disappointed by is that they only had 10 episodes. It's impossible to fit all of that in to 10 episodes. The finale was bound to be a disappointment on some level because of the limitations they were given with only 10 episodes.
Think about that for a second... The audio book is like ~40 hours long. The show had less than 10 hours to get all of that in.

which is something I don't understand. Why they didn't split book 2 and 3 into 4 seasons, would have been much better.

I thought it was amazing but do agree... they should be doing 24 episode seasons like most shows do at the very least they needed another 5 episodes to really flesh things out.
Still... it's awesome and now the painfully long wait begins.

24 one hour length episodes? You serious? I can't think of one show that does that. 10 might be cutting it short 2-3 episodes but I can't imagine adding 14.

They should just do 12 like every other HBO show worth a damn.

I haven't read the books enough to know what a truly good split would have been, but it seems like the Stannis/Renly conflict (when the smoke monster from lost comes out of the woman's vagina and kills Renly) could have been the end-point of an entire 12 episode season with the very end we got from Season 2 being the end of another.

They have more than enough time to have made extra episodes, don't want to finish or leave the show hanging before the guy finishes writing the books.

A lot of shows have 22 episode seasons. Some start out at 13 and get a back 9 order depending on ratings and other factors. GoT could easiny do a 22 episode season if they wanted to.

Well, Game of Thrones cost about $5 million an episode and Blackwater alone cost about $15 million, so no...they couldn't.

You're right, HBO doesn't have enough money for that. It isn't like the season finale set a record with 5.1 million people watching it or anything.
They can easily afford it, they just don't want to. The problem is when they have episodes like this season finale that are completely underwhelming for a lot (most) fans of the show when they could easily extend the season 3 more (or however many they want) episodes and put out a better show.

Except that their entire motto is to do shorter seasons to maximize quality, which they have always done. Wire averaged 12 episodes per season, Oz averaged 8, the comedies averaged 12-13, Sopranos about 12, etc. Non-network dramas just don't work in full lengthed schedules.

You don't want 22 episodes seasons of GoT. The show does a good job at covering everything important. Instead of all episodes being solid and moving the story forward, with 22 you're going to be getting episodes devoted solely to armies marching and other filler ****. I've read the books, it is known. Ten episodes fits most of it in, if more were needed, about thirteen would suffice. The past two seasons have maybe left out two-three episodes worth of story total, none of it being critical.

A standard season is 13 episodes, so I don't see how their seasons are "that much shorter"..

I never said I wanted 22 episodes a season, I said they could easily do it if they wanted. He writes like Robert Jordan.. you could probably stretch a season out for 40 episodes if you really wanted to. :P

24 is a pretty common number, that's why I went with it. Most of the 1 hour shows I watch have season lengths somewhere around that. Hour long shows off the top of my head that do it include House, 24, Gossip Girl(bite me) and Friday Night Lights(pre ban-hammer) amongst others.
I reckon this could have used at least 15, so much stuff gets glossed over that wouldn't need to, I haven't read the books and I still know that a heap of stuff is being glossed over, it always feels rushed in the season finale as well, like they've got to tie it all up but don't want to!
I'd say about 18 would be perfect.

I thought it was fine. Set up next season, which is what last seasons finale did. The real impact 'finale' with big moments that everything leads to is always going to be episode 9 with this show.
12 episodes would be the absolute maximum id want for Thrones. 10 has resulted in brilliance week after week after week, and negative reaction to one episode (especially an episode designed to calm things down after last weeks 'holy ****'-fest and build up for next year) shouldnt result in an outcry for change.

I've read the books, and I can tell you 18 would not be perfect. There is stuff left out, but its a lot more minor, and most of the time it would dilute the show. If ten isn't enough, 12-13 would be 'perfect'.
