This game showed me again why i dislike Gomez in the Nationalmanschaft. He makes our attack so one dimensional. It works with players like Robben and Ribery that constantly can beat their opponents on the outside, but the german team is build to play the short pass. Thats how we succeeded in South Africa. Klose, even when he doesnt participate in the attack, helps the attack by creating rooms. he can switch places and lets guys like müller or reus roam up front, creating matchup problems. Gomez will just stand their.

In my eyes, playing with Gomez up front leaves you with 10 vs 11 in the buildup. He will not help in the buildup. I felt in the Netherlands game he showed he can run. he can create chances. Today, he got 3 passes or so, couldnt properly control any of them and had 4 meaningless headers.

This. This. And more this. **** Gomez. So hard. That and Kroos, I understand the idea of having a naturally central attacker to be in position to pressure Pirlo when we lose the ball, but not only did it not work, because Kroos was falling too deep, but it also made our offense so much less effective by taking away our strength out wide and exacerbating how static we become with Gomez up top. I've never been a big fan of Kroos in attacking position as he's not just mobile enough, and he just hasn't ever risen to the occasion yet. Reus needed to feature in this squad much more heavily, he was our best winger and is likely our best hope to replace Miro. His runs were great, his touch sublime and he's got wisdom beyond his years.

And hell **** Badstuber to, he's a great passer of the ball, but he's so unbelievably slow that he just makes it impossible for us to play a great high defensive line against good teams. Boateng-Hummels need to be our starting CBs in Brazil or once again we'll be too susceptible to long balls over the top.

Finally, kudos to Italy. They defended well, although we were frustratingly wasteful, and those counterattacks were vicious. He won't get the love he's earned, but Montolivo has put together two simply excellent games for Italy after a career of not fitting into the squad. Not sure if he'll take over and actually replace Pirlo, but they do a great job of sharing the burden of creating with their passing. If they play this well against Spain Italy will win the final.

Props to Spain for putting on a great showing in the final. This was a lot more like how they played in 2008 when I didn't hate watching them play. For most of this tournament they were playing a lot more like the frustrating 2010 team. Kudos to italy as well, great run to get there and they will be amongst the favorites for 2014 if Pirlo and Buffon haven't retired.

If only Loew were a little more cocky in his selection. Instead of trying to counter our opponents we should've been more focused on doing what we do but at the best level we can. I know our defense looked awful against Italy, but I don't think they'd have played as poorly against Spain had we gotten past the Italians, especially since we would have been playing a lot deeper and not facing the type of direct Striker that could burn the offsides trap off long balls.

2014 can't get hear soon enough, and Loew needs to be more arrogant with his team selection and not over-tweak. Reus, Mueller and Klose, those should've been our 3 forwards from the get go, maybe Start Poldi or Schuerrle in Klose's spot til Miro was healthy enough to start, but that's the group we played the best with and that's the group we should've been breaking in much earlier. Just like the backline, Loew was experimenting so much that Hummels never really got to develop an understanding with Badstuber or Boateng, and with how slow Badstuber is, him n his partner need to be on the exact same page.

*sigh* at least 2014 would be 18 years since the last german championship, which is how long we have serious draughts. So, there's that...
