Exactly. Miles is actually our best slot guy. I am really hoping Coale/Beasley come into their own during camp and seize the job because it means more of Miles playing outside. He's fully able to defeat press coverage and if you want to minimize the abuse he'd take he's VERY effective in the flanker role.
My second comment was really the damning one from my perspective. I honestly don't think Gordan's skillset is any greater than say Andre Holmes. From my vantage point we have three guys competing solely for outside WR positions, five competing solely for slot, and two players capable of both. Keep in mind I'm talking about at this point in time.
Outside Only: Dez, Holmes, Radway
Inside Only: Coale, Harris, Beasley, Hakim, Benford
Both: Miles, Ogletree
Gordon DOES fit what we target for our outside receivers (he's pretty much the same build/speed as both Holmes and Radway) the question that needs to be asked is even if we carry SIX WRs would he make the roster?
Miles and Dez are locks. (2)
Coale might save the 'Boys a slot early and be on PUP and join the team mid-season. I don't think he's getting released without getting a camp. (1?)
So far you have 1 definite outside, 1 injured/slot, 1 both. The rest?
JJ stated that Holmes has the inside track going into camp for the 3rd WR slot (meaning we'll kick Miles inside in 3WR sets. I think unless he has a horrendous camp he's a lock. (4)
Harris has recently noted by JG as "He is looking leaner, and I think that's an important thing for him" and placed him firmly in the mix for the slot role. I think he's competing with Beasley and that special teams will heavily come into play. (4.5)
Radway was the camp darling last year and JG admitted he wouldn't of cut him during final cuts if he hadn't of broken his leg in the last preseason game. I don't think he's fully recovered from his broken leg and think he'll slide onto the PS again.
Beasley was the star of mini-camps and was repeatedly raved for his exceptional route-running and the the fact he didn't drop a single pass. I think he's competing with Harris and that special teams will heavily come into play. HOWEVER if he plays like he did during mini-camps we won't be cutting him. (5.0) or (6)
Hakim struggled during camp and dropped a number of passes however he's 6'0 and runs a 4.29 so he's going to get a shot. I think he's destined to land on the practice squad. Immensely gifted athletically but has a lot of work to do with his route running and hands. Hope to stash him on the PS but I think he'll be signed somewhere as a 5th or 6th WR for KR/PR duties.
Benford is also touted as a great route runner and has the build of a RB rather than a WR. He's solid in the deep speed department (4.48) and showed well during mini-camps. Long-shot to start with and I think he'll lose the numbers game. I have a feeling he'll be stashed on the PS.
So the way my eyes see it :)
1) Dez
2) Miles
3) Holmes
4) Harris
5) Beasley
PUP) Coale
I just don't buy that he would be a lock to make the team. If we were talking about someone fitting Garrett's mold (lunch-pale to work/intensely hard worker/team captain/upstanding citizen) I would be less hesitant but he doesn't fit the RKG mold.
