Something that never comes up is that Jeremy Mincey has turned into a pretty good player for the Jaguars. We have added some players to our pass rush recently, but the player he has become is probably a guy we would not have let go.

I remember reading about Mincey and the Pats recently. I think it's fair to say that he was not the player then as he is now. Right now he'd be on any roster in the league, but back when he left the Patriots nobody was expecting that he'd turn out the way he did. He's a good player now and someone that I wouldn't mine having on the roster. Unfortunately it didn't work out for him in NE, but I'm glad that he found success elsewhere.

Vollmer and Fells expected back this week . . .
Maybe some pass protection is coming too!

So Ridley hurt his knee? No word on the severity but I don't think it is bad. Tavon Wilson got banged up too.

Nice write up, definitely curious to see how the secondary matches up with Phillys passing game. As you mentioned the eagles got plenty of production out of their backups so the depth guys should get a tough test

Reiss is reporting that Brady, Lloyd and Gronk (possible hernandez as well) may not play at all tonight. I wouldn't mind getting Hoyer and Mallet two full halfs to play.

I'm assuming that Vollmer is probably going to be inactive this week, so an extra benefit would be avoiding a Nate Solder/Marcus Cannon vs. Trent Cole/Jason Babin showdown with Tom Brady in the pocket. The Saints game didn't inspire much confidence in the offensive line's ability to prevent Brady from getting killed.
I'd be kind of surprised if Gronkowski and Hernandez were inactive considering the lack of depth at tight end right now. Shiancoe hasn't been practicing lately and Daniel Fells will probably be inactive as well. The only other tight ends on the active roster are Alex Silvestro and Tyler Urban.
Does anyone think Silvestro may be able to beat out Shiancoe for a roster spot?

Silvestro could be a decent roster spot gamble considering he's going to be used for STs mostly anyways.

Running back Jeff Demps has been assigned No. 42, which was BenJarvus Green-Ellis' number last season. Demps is not eligible to play in tonight's game, per NFL rules.
|
Makes sense, but I wanted to see him play tonight. Then again, KR specialist may not come into effect until late in the season when kickers stop booming the ball into the back of the endzone.

Nice pressure and nice coverage by Hightower on that 3rd and short. And god damn Mallet is looking terrible right now after only three passes. Offensive line looks pretty bad still as well.

The 6th TE, who was a DE a few days ago, just caught a TD from the 3rd QB being protected by the 2nd string linemen and the other targets were the second string RB and second string (and third) WRs.
edit: This was against the Eagles first string defense during their "dress rehearsal."

Solder and Cannon really not looking good thus far. Both are getting beat badly.

I think Vollmer needs to play RT and Cannon needs to get guard reps. He simply can't handle the speed outside.

I think I prefer Vollmer on the left side to be perfectly honest

Wow, it looks like New England is going to release Jonathan Fanene today. I wonder what will happen to his $3.85 million signing bonus.

Well there's the first surprise move. I thought he would have a nice role here as an early down base end and an interior guy on passing downs, I know he's been hurt maybe younger guys are playing well. It is a numbers game on the dl but this makes things a little clearer in an unexpected way

I really am shocked. He was the first player NE signed this offseason. Usually that means there is an extreme interest level between the player and the organization.
Either he's hurt beyond help or he couldn't establish himself as a starter and the Patriots just felt like they were paying him too much to be a backup... but almost 4 million to sit on the street seems a bit nuts.

NE needs him at RT, because they don't have a RT without him. Solder and Cannon are not RTs. Cannon isn't a tackle at all really and Solder is a LT.

Ebner looked pretty good last night. He had more defensive PT in an NFL preseason game than his entire OSU career.
I think he has a chance to be a solid and sometimes spectacular player for you guys. Hell of an athlete that is a fantastic tackler and hitter.
Does he have a shot at the 53 man or is he going to be a practice squad guy this season?

James Ihedigbo has been dealing with an injury recently, so Ebner has a decent shot at making the team. It may be risky for New England to subject Ebner to waivers.

Who is everyone projecting at defensive tackle now that Jonathan Fanene is gone? I'm holding out hope that Ron Brace and Gerard Warren make the team. Do you all think it's unrealistic to hope for Wilfork, Love, Brace, Warren, and Deaderick to all make the final 53?

If that's the case, I would imagine Warren is cut with the wink wink agreement.
This could be the week for injured players to return or be waived/released. I wonder if Dennard comes back or is waived (or sent to IR later).

I agree with Descendency that Warren doesn't make the initial 53 but will be let go with an agreement in place that he stays by the phone for later in the season.
I think at DT they will go into the season with Wilfork, Love, Brace and Deaderick and hope Pryor can come in after week 6 and add a pash rushing threat from the interior.
