oh please do define "steeler football" that rah rah smashmouth **** from the 70s????? arians was a ****** gameplanner and a horrific schemer/playcaller. Haley was brought in to be more effective with what he has, which is offensive weapons from the QB to the top 3 Wrs right now. The steelers stable of backs leaves much to be desired but at least we shouldnt expect running single back out of 3 TE sets and single back out of 5 wide sets, and stuff like draws and tosses at the worst possible moments. I would expect him to use what he has to their potential, which isnt like the passing game he had in AZ and it isnt like the run game he had in KC...its somewhere in the middle

There was a lot of intended sarcasm in my statement. It's a lot of old timers and media folk who want that "Steelers football" to return.

I'm not positive, but I think "Steeler Football" is one of those things that never really existed in the first place.

Although he was always a horrible fit in a 3-4 nobody ever envisioned him being such a ***** regarding contact and have a lazy attitude towards working hard to improve. Big muscles can only take you so far.

Not official yet. But there's websites/sources saying the Jets swapped Wayne Hunter for Jason Smith (Rams OL).

I realize that Jason Smith is a massive bust, but who would actually want to trade for Wayne Hunter?

So the Rams are trading a bag of piss for a sack of ****? Seems like a downgrade.

I'm not a fan of the trade, but I guess it's the best we can do. Jason Smith being selected 2nd overall, god I just want to puke all over these Pizza rolls.

You know who Jason Smith lost his starting job to? Missouri's favorite Right Tackle, Barry Richardson!!

The Lions should take Aaron Curry or Jason Smith. Stafford might be a bust.

Jason Smith is owed like 4 million this year and has a 13 million dollar roster bonus due next year. Wayne Hunter is only owed like 1.3 million.
So it could be a decent cap move, especially when you consider Hunter and Smith have no hope of playing this year.

The only guy currently in front of Smith on the Jets depth chart at RT is a 2nd year UDFA who took this long to actually pry the job away.
If Smith goes into practice and shows even the slightest bit of competence, I look for him to be given the starting job. And it'll be even more important after 6 weeks when Sanchez is pulled for Tebow and that suddenly becomes the blind side...

No way that happens. Austin Howard has played better recently then Smith or Hunter have in the past year or 2. Neither one of those guys should even be on a roster, Hunter was given numerous chances because they had nobody better then him, Smith because he was the #2 overall pick. Howard is the best RT out of that group by a good margin, which isn't saying much, but Jason Smith would have to show more then be competent to end up starting.

You mean the one game in which he played against the opposition's starters?
The only reason he's ahead of those guys now is because he's an unknown and those two are known to be ******. It may not take much to be better than them, but it's highly unlikely he'd be a starting RT in the NFL otherwise.
Plus, with Smith, there's always the potential of him being "woken up" by the trade. It wouldn't be the first time we've seen a talented-but-lazy player improve after being traded. A lot of these guys go to their first teams as highly drafted, highly paid rookies and blow off anyone trying to give them instruction. Then, they get traded or cut, realize the honeymoon period is over, and begin playing better.
I know his problems include being frequently injured, but if he can avoid those, he could very easily play well enough in practice to earn a shot at the starting job. The uber-athletic pass blocker that we all saw draft #2 overall is in there somewhere...whether that guy shows itself again or not who can say. But I'd be willing to bet, if properly motivated and healthy, he can be a major improvement on Howard.
Let's see how he does week 1 against the Bills sporting Williams and Anderson, or week 2 against the always tough Steelers who should have both Harrison and Woodley healthy. That'll be a far better test than the Panthers in the preseason.

He faced the starters vs the Panthers, pre-season or not and fared really solid. They have a few pass rushers on that team too and he stonewalled a few guys. Of course he can't hang with Mario Williams and Lamar Woodley, not many can as it is, but he has most definately played better then those other 2, who have sucked something serious in pre-season and regular season for multiple years now.
It's only the 2nd year for Howard, I don't think that's a long time for a UDFA to become a starter. Draft stock to me means absolutely nothing at this point. Maybe the Jets feel better saying he was the #2 pick or something, but I'm positive they would be downgrading once again to start Jason Smith over Howard.
