I'd also suggest Glenlivet. These days I wouldn't dream of drinking it any way other than neat; but if you're new to scotch, you might want to throw an ice cube in.
Whatever you do, stay away from Johnnie Walker Red Label. If you're going with the bottom-mid shelf stuff, Clan MacGregor is just as good at a lower price.

I generally don't stray from single malts, but if you want to go bottom of the barrel blended, McIvor tastes very similar to Black Label and is pretty damn cheap.

johnnie walker in general is pretty bad. i mean, blue is ok, but for the cost, you can do so much better.

Yeah, I haven't been at all impressed with JW. I just stick to my single malts, usually Islay, and call it a day.

I like Jack and Coke so maybe I should try whiskey neat.
What's a decent whiskey to start with? I'd try JD but one time I was completely slushed and ran outta coke so started chuggin the bottle of JD but even in my state I could tell it was not good.

Well, it all depends on the style you want to go for. I prefer scotch to bourbon myself.
For starters:
- Scotch: Glenlivet, Glenfiddich
- Irish: Redbreast
- Bourbon: I'm no expert, but Makers strikes me as a good starter

I'm in serious danger of killing the entire bottle of fireball or honey whiskey any time they are around.

Now you're all forcing me to have a scotch. I wasn't planning on drinking tonight either.

Yes, listen to Rob S ! Glenlivet and Glenfiddich are what I would drink all the time if I could. I prefer it on the rocks (usually just 2 or 3), but I know all the whiskey snobs say never drink scotch anything but neat.

A few months ago I discovered that I absolutely love gin. its pretty convenient for me, only one of my friends likes gin too, so I'll buy a handle for a weekend, drink all three nights and usually still have some of a handle left over. I get Seagram's gin, with an infused lime flavor that is only $23 per handle. I started on a gin and tonic and have tried a few different types of gins when I've gone out, so far Beefeater is my favorite to mix with tonic water, that seagrams is great for shots/etc and mixing with sprite/mountain dew/ginger ale, and Tanquerey is a solid choice in gin for me. Anyone else have enjoy gin who would have some suggestions?
