Cowboys begin preliminary extension discussions with Tony Romo
Source: Ed Werder (quote from Rotoworld)
Quote:
ESPN's Ed Werder reports the Cowboys have begun "very preliminary" extension talks with Tony Romo.
It was the Cowboys, not Romo's camp, that initiated the discussions. The six-year, $67.4 million deal signed by Romo in October of 2007 expires after the 2013 season. While there's been speculation that Dallas would turn to the draft to find Romo's successor next offseason, it has always made more sense to recommit to one of the NFL's top-10 quarterbacks. Romo is seen as a flawed signal-caller because his biggest flops have come on the national stage, but his winning percentage and passing statistics compare favorably to all but the elite quarterbacks in the NFL. He turns 33 next April.

How much is Romo worth? Take a look at some relevant statistics:
48-30 career record (averages 9.8 wins, 6.2 losses per season)
13 4th-quarter comebacks, 14 game-winning drives
1-3 record over three playoff appearances: 2006, 2007, 2009
16-game averages: 4337 yards (64.6%), 31 TD, 15 INT, 8.1 YPA, 97.3 QBR

For comparison, here's Matt Schaub's 16-game averages with Houston (excludes two starts for Falcons):
33-32 record (averages 8.1 wins, 7.9 losses per season)
Seven fourth-quarter comebacks, 10 game-winning drives
No playoff appearances
16-game averages: 4226 yards (65.2%), 23 TD, 13 INT, 8.0 YPA, 94.1 rating
Schaub's contract: five years, $66.15 million with $29.15 million guaranteed
Also worth noting: Schaub is one year younger than Romo.

Not too shabby. I never understood why some Cowboy fans wanted to move on from Romo. You don't find that kind of production on the street.

Even stranger: Peyton Manning's averages:
4216 yards (65.0%), 31 TD, 15 INT, 7.6 YPA, 95.0 rating
And Romo's again:
4337 yards (64.6%), 31 TD, 15 INT, 8.1 YPA, 97.3 QBR

To be fair the one BIG knock still on Romo is he struggles in big games down the stretch.
Look at roethlisbuerger. His stats won't jump out at you but he 'll win you those big playoff games.
That should come into play. IMO

This isn't really relevant, but here's how I'm feeling about QB rankings at this point, loosely grouped into tiers.
Cream of the crop
1. Aaron Rodgers
2. Tom Brady
3. Peyton Manning
4. Drew Brees
Lords of the rings
5. Eli Manning
6. Ben Roethlisberger
Could lose championship virginity soon
7. Philip Rivers
8. Tony Romo
9. Michael Vick
10. Joe Flacco
11. Matt Ryan
12. Cam Newton
13. Matthew Stafford
14. Matt Schaub
The future
15. Robert Griffin III
16. Andrew Luck
Just don't mess this up for me
17. Alex Smith
18. Jay Cutler
19. Josh Freeman
This is why we can't have nice things
20. Jake Locker
21. Andy Dalton
22. Mark Sanchez
23. Matt Cassel
24. Sam Bradford
25. Ryan Fitzpatrick
At least they're not in the final tier
26. Carson Palmer
27. Christian Ponder
28. Russell Wilson
Enjoy your top ten picks
29. Blaine Gabbert
30. Ryan Tannehill
31. Kevin Kolb
32. Brandon Weeden

Peyton won a Super Bowl though at age 30 I believe. I know Romo became a starter around 26, but he's getting up there. I think Romo can play until he's at least 37 barring some catastrophic injury.
In any case, Romo has never, ever been the problem in Dallas. The Cowboys have had other issues all over the past few years. The units that have not stepped include the running game (maybe that finally changes with Murray), the offensive line, and the secondary on defense.

I never understood the **** Romo gets. He is no Peyton or Brady, but he is still a pretty good quarterback. Who could the Cowboys realistically get who would better than him, and at what price?

No one. The Cowboys should ride Romo until they can't anymore. Unless they want to go back to the Drew Henson days.

I would'nt say Drew Henson had "days" in Dallas. Now if you want to say Quincy Carter or Chad Hutchinson days, then we're getting somewhere.

I like Romo despite the hate he gets I'd take him over just about everyone in that 'championship virginity' tier.

I think you're underselling Cutler.
I do think Romo belongs in that 2nd tier of QBs. I am not a Romo fan but I'll admit the guy will put up nice numbers.

All he needs now is for the defense to carry him through the playoffs.

What makes you say that? The way I see it, he's had one great season (2008), three decent seasons (2007, 2009, 2010) and two shortened seasons (2006 and 2011.) He's topped 4,000 yards once, never sniffed 65% completions, and is barely over .500 as a starting quarterback with one playoff appearance in four full seasons.

Look at the crap he's playing with. But I digress. This is a Romo thread not Jay.

How about a 4-$64 deal for Romo with the first two years guaranteed (~$30-32 million)? It's got to be higher than what Schaub got, although not quite in the range of Brady/Brees/Manning. Romo gets a bunch of guaranteed money for the two years he's most likely to maintain his current level of play, and then Dallas can either cut ties or keep him for a year or two without making any sort of financial commitment.

Jay Cutler can't hold Romo's jock. He shouldn't even be allowed near it.
And i wouldn't be surprised in the least bit if his extension makes him the highest paid QB in the NFL for the time being. I think Jerry will wanna give him fair market value, and he considers him one of the best in the league.

You cant really ignore the fact that he's a pretty damn good QB anymore. He carried that offense on his back last year. And he does it all the damn time. He's just getting better too.
