I just checked there is no great divide within 100 miles of me. I'll have to go to NJ the next time I go to Philly.

On my Road Trip I picked up Deschutes IPA, Odell's Stout, and Odell's Wheat for a friend. On my Pac NW visit I overdosed on IPA. Love it.

I just moved to Oregon last month. It's like living in IPA heaven.

this is officially the greatest beer i've ever had. even black racer, my absolute favorite last year, couldn't hold a candle.
also, from gabf... nearly the entire mid-west and east coast aisle had nothing that was even drinkable. and this is from a friend who doesn't like ipas. they were, almost as a whole, utter trash.

I'm also surprised Bell's didn't have anything. Goose Island has really decreased in quality so I understand that. Destihl has awesome sours usually so I am surprised nothing was good there.

PBR won for American Adjunct Lager. Troges won for Amber, Pilsner, and German Style Hefeweisen. Not exactly poor styles. Iron Hill won Bronze for Imperial Stout. Unless you are saying that the awards don't matter then fine, I guess, but I doubt he tried the entire East Coast selection.

I saw online that Fireman's 4 took home a few second place awards
Good stuff right there.

we certainly didn't try every single beer. but when you have roughly 20 consecutive undrinkable beers across various styles, across various brewers, it's not really coincidence anymore when they're all undrinkable. further, the medals aren't everything. the american style ipa winner truly deserved it. and american black ale? not even close. and some of the medal winners aren't even present. regardless of any of that, a single brewery winning 3 medals doesn't mean that the entire rest of the region wasn't horrific.

So reading this thread off and on recently has inspired me to step up the quality of my beer drinking, but most of the stores around where I live suck and carry a limited selection. I've had some decent IPAs and found that I like most of them, and stouts and porters I LOVE. The other day I found a place an hour-ish from where I live with a much better selection and came home with:

and
****ing loved both of them, especially the Ruination, and I will no doubt be using this thread to guide me in the future, haha.

Apparently, beer/wine companies cannot ship from out of state directly to customers in Texas. So, my order from Rogue has to go to my relative in CA, then they have to open it, remove the UPS call tag from the box, and send it to me. Lame.

in the half-assed research I did, it's because Texas wanted to give its wineries a leg-up on out of state competition

Honestly, it's not all that bad. There are a few wineries near where I live, and they're okay. The only wine type I really care for is cabernet sauvignon, and they grow so much in this state.
