The money Routt made this year:
$5 million leftover from the Raiders
$4 million signing bonus from the Chiefs
$1.8 million as the balance of his 2012 salary as a vested veteran
If no on claims him on waivers and he signs elsewhere, he'll also get money from THAT team. (Probably league minimum, but still, a few hundred K.)
Not bad for....7?....games worth of work.

If he clears waivers I would be very much of the opinion the Pats should try and sign him. The Talib signing indicates they are likely to move to more of a man coverage look. Talib, Routt and Dennard is a pretty sizeable upgrade over Dennard, Arrington and Marquice Cole from the Rams game

The thought is highly intriguing, but I'd be surprised if BB took another character risk at the same position at midseason. Still Routt and Talib would have the potential to be an acceptable duo which we haven't had since Samuel and Hobbs 5 seasons ago.

I think the Talib trade showed BB is in full win now mode. Routt is a definite upgrade over the current CBs

If the feeling is that the Pats could try to claim Routt, the Jets, Bills and Dolphins might put in a claim just to keep him away from the Pats. It's not like those teams are totally set at CB and they need to do everything they can to keep NE from pulling away.

And which top QB prospect will the team pass on with the #1 pick? They haven't drafted a first round QB since Todd Blackledge...gotta keep the streak alive!
Maybe, after the Jets cut Sanchez, the Chiefs will bring him in. They like their rehabilitation projects.

Don't fret. Maybe he'll be Trent Green 2.0 and lead you to mediocrity for like 3 years. That'd be....well, something.

We'll have a new GM who knows how important QBs are! Pioli doesn't, even though he was around Tom Brady for years! Bring on the new regime!

Shouldn't have let that Carr go.

Had to franchise Bowe to keep him around for one miserable season.

Carr wasn't worth what he got. He has been mediocre in Dallas too from what I've seen. He's not worth $10m a year and anyone who tells you otherwise is a dolt.

The Chiefs have given Matt Cassel 46 million dollars in the last 4 years.
In 4 years, Andrew Luck will make 22 million dollars.
I think the pendulum swung too harshly against the top 10 picks now.

You paid Routt $5.8 million for 7 games and aren't going to get **** for Bowe when he walks after this season.
It was just a massive cluster **** for the Chiefs. There was no good way out.

That sucks for someone like Luck, but unproven rookies didn't deserve anywhere near what they were getting. Bradford, without having taken a single snap in the NFL, instantly became one of the highest paid guys at his position. That was completely absurd.

Another interesting factoid about the draft salary caps: they are all guaranteed, which means that even if the Jaguars draft a QB with their top pick next year, it would make no sense to cut Gabbert in the next two years because they've already paid him in full.

Routt wasn't going to play for Kansas City next year anyways; he had a $10 million option bonus and none of his contract was guaranteed. He has allowed a QBR against of over 100. Sure, Routt was a free agent bust but the Chiefs would be continuing to sink costs otherwise (either financially or in terms of poor play in the secondary.)

That got me thinking about current NFL QB salaries:
The first number is their 2012 cost. The number in () is their 2013 price tag. All values include base salary and bonuses spread out over the life of the contract. #s are approximations of math in my head.
Peyton Manning- 18 mil (20)
Tom Brady- 16 mil (18.75)
Philip Rivers- 16 mil (18)
Eli Manning- 15 mil (17)
Michael Vick- 13.5 mil (16.5)
Big Ben- 14.5 mil (14.5)
Matthew Stafford- 13.5 mil (15)
Carson Palmer- 12.5 mil (13)
Tony Romo- 11 mil (13.5)
Matt Ryan- 13 mil (11.5)
Drew Brees- 10 mil (16.75)
Kevin Kolb- 9.5 (12.5)-which he won't see
Sam Bradford- 12 mil (9)
Jay Cutler- 9.5 mil (10)
Matt Schaub- 8 mil (10.5)
Aaron Rodgers- 8.5 mil (10)- His contract was frontloaded, but still a steal
Ryan Fitzpatrick- 9 mil (8.5)
Josh Freeman- 8.5 mil (10.5)
Joe Flacco- 9 mil (free agent)
Alex Smith- 7 mil (10 mil)
Matt Hasselbeck- 7.5 (7.5)
Mark Sanchez- 5 mil (10 mil)- Sanchez's contract is a lot of smoke and mirrors
Andrew Luck- 4 mil (5)-The rest of the rookie contracts are obviously below this

They signed the deal a few years ago before he blew up. Very smart front office.
