If McCarron played in a wide open spread system like at Baylor or Arizona, I think his numbers would look more like a possible franchise QB at the next level.

Because all Nick Saban QBs are coached to be game managers, IMO people are underestimating McCarron's pro upside.

At some point I believe McCarron is going to be given a serious look as a potential starter but he'll probably start his career as a backup.


McCarron is better pro prospect than Dorsey, arm strength isn't even close.

McCarron reminds me of so many NFL backups - it's not even funny.

He plays the kind of offense I want to see in college, but he just doesn't impress me in a way that makes me think he could do it when everything gets just a bit harder.

To me, McCarron is Sam Bradford without a basketball on grass offense. Very accurate. Not super mobile, but nowhere near a statue, underrated pocket presence. Doesn't have the 5-star arm strength to rip the ball thru a defense, but can make all the necessary throws and makes them accurately. I also think they have similar height and body types. Bradford put on some weight, I think McCarron can/will also before he gets to the next level. Definitely should stay in school.

That being said, I wasn't all that big on Bradford. I figured he'd become about what he has in the NFL. I don't know that McCarron is much more than a 2nd/3rd round talent, but I'd bet he'll get drafted in the first because of the NFL being a QB starved league, and being a "winner".

I do think McCarron is an NFL starter. But I don't think he's ever going to be a top 10 QB in the league. Like Bradford, he'll settle into being anywhere from "not going to lose games for you" to slightly above middle of the pack.

No they wouldn't, they would look like the numbers of a typical system QB who won't translate to the NFL.

THe point was that since McCarron never has the opportunity to throw the football 30+ times a game, there's a very small sample set to evaluate what he's really proficient at doing throwing the football other than not committing turnovers.

His physical tools are fine IMO, but since he's never allowed to push the throttle from the pocket it's hard to get a clear picture of what his actual skillset is as a passer.

Wide open college offense = built around the the QB passing the football.
You can call that being a 'system QB' or whatever, but in Saban's offensive scheme the QB is a complimentary piece and never the focal point.

The way you use the phrase 'system QB', I assume you mean a prospect who lacks both the physical tools or skillset to succeed at the next level.
I don't necessarily have that opinion about McCarron.

I won't say Saban ruins QB prospects, but they sure don't seem to develop under his coaching.
Alabama recruits 5-star talent at the skill positions on offense and the oline so I could see how a top QB recruit might consider playing for the Tide.

It's just that IMO Saban treats his QBs like they're the least important part of the offense.
