Best RB's in Pass Pro
So with the emergence of the spread style offense, RB's who can block out of the backfield and catch have become a HUGE part of the game.
So i'm wondering who are the best backs in that aspect. And if you could, who are the guys who can both block, but are that explosive, shifty type back?

Quite a few smaller backs around this year. Taylor (Stanford) isn't that good - so I'll throw out Zac Stacy (Vanderbilt) - Missouri game a great example, matched up against Zaviar Gooden (probable mid round pick) a few times and won each time.

I don't know if he's shifty or explosive enough to qualify but Mike Gillislee is a very solid pass protector.

Randle's a really nice fit for today's NFL IMO. Blocks well, catches the ball out of the backfield, explosive with the ball in his hands so he can take advantage of the carries he gets. Don't think he gets enough love, although apparently whether or not he comes out is kind of up in the air.

riddick will get some love from an NFL team looking for a player in the passing game, the kid is a good blocker and an unreal receiver (admittedly not part of the thread title). Not a special running back but a special player in the passing game as a running bakc

Mike James, like most backs at the U, is a pretty good blocker. Jack of all trades and master of none, James could be a decent pick-up late in the draft.

If you watch Stanford games, pass protection is an area where Stepfan Taylor excels. It is a noticeable drop-off in pass protection when another RB comes into the lineup.

Cut blocks too much - which might even be outlawed moving forward. Just a big question for me why such a physical back would do that - stand up and stick your face in there.

I don't think that means he isn't good, which is what you said earlier in the thread. He cuts block because he is taught to cut block. I'm sure with his size and strength, plus physicality, he would learn other techniques just fine.
I also don't see the NFL outlawing cut blocks out of the backfield. Maybe on the line. It would eliminate the small, quick running back from the game in most cases.

Yeah, Randle easily. His blocking ability gets lost sometimes in that crazy offense, but his chipping is the key to them being able to get the ball downfield the last couple years. And he's not that big at 6', 200.
