He's the most cookie cutter director possible and if his name weren't spielberg his movies wouldn't get reviewed nearly as well. I mean even Munich got good reviews and that film was garbage.
**** Spielberg. He is talented and he does have so much money and backing and yet he continues to churn out ****. Munich was decent but then you look at a movie like The Terminal or War of the Worlds, both awful. He makes mindless drivel most of the time and I hate him for it. At least when someone says their favorite director is Spielberg I know they are full of **** and not someone who;s opinion I care about. He consistently does not challenge with his films, what you see is what you get and they always could have been better. He comes up with some good ideas but his execution is ****.

Nor would I say those films are overrated and get undeserved praise because Spielberg directed them.
Like all directors? No, not true. Not great is also incredibly generous. He has made some ****** films. Just look at A.I. The minute he has challenging material, something ambitious that requires good directing to make it a great film (Kubrick would have made a masterpiece) he ***** it up because he is a hack. Now to be fair he has made some movies I do really enjoy but the one thing they all have in common is they were great ideas with great actors involved (because the biggest name in directing obviously attracts that biggest talent except for maybe E.T.) but universally they could have been better in the hands of someone more talented. Is he a bad director? No. He is average. Good for him.
Life of Pi was pretty freakin' spectacular too. Might seem kind of stupid to those who have never read the book but it's a really interesting story. The visuals were freakin' amazing too and the 3d was done exceptionally well. Usually I'm not much of a fan of 3D movies but this was one of the few exceptions. Great movie, go see it now!

Killing Them Softly was just alright. Kinda boring.. lots of talking, which is always fine.. The acting was good enough though, especially Pitt and Gandolfini. The movie is not subtle about its political message at all. I'd give it a 7/10.

Ya it was pretty underwhelming. Like you said there was some good acting from Pitt and some decent dialogue but the plot was really straightforward and it was pretty easy to see where everything was headed from the start.
The fact Dominik was trying to hit the audience over the head with the political diatribe at every turn bumps it down a few notches for me as well. Probably could have gone without the slow motion drive by also.

I think it looked cool, but it felt a little out of place.. also, Gandolfini's character didn't even need to be in the movie at all. He did nothing of consequence, aside from being an alcoholic sex addict.
So my brother is coming home next week, hasn't been around in 6 months. All he wants to do for the first few days is sit around and watch movies. Anyone got a top 10 "must see" list? for movies that have recently come out.
