I don't see why not. He's more efficient, plays defense, his team is the current 1 seed in the league, and he's the sole scoring threat on the team on a nightly basis.

He's basically our Derek Rose.

Don't let past stereotypes of him effect your perception of him this year. He's a different player.

Because he's not that efficient at all, Durant is absolutely wrecking him in that department. Plus, more turnovers than assists isn't going to help you seem like an MVP candidate to anyone.

Efficiency is terribly overrated here. Sometimes you want your star player to be less efficient and take more shots. Jordan wasn't efficient, nor was Kobe. Nobody back then before the efficiency craze wanted those guys to pass it to Will Paxson and Brian Shaw more.

Durant is an awful defender too. Melo can D up even when playing the 4, Durant struggles playing defense as a 3.

LeBron is LeBron. No argument there.

Let me put it this way. When the Wolves were as bad as the Cavs were and Love was putting up better numbers than Varejao I never called him an MVP candidate even as a Wolves homer.

Jordan was very, very efficient and calling Durant an awful defender would have made sense 3 years ago, not anymore.

This year, not at all. Durant has been a much better defender this year, and Melo's defense is becoming crazy overrated. Durant is also a better rebounder (at the 3 while Melo is at the 4), passer, shooter, has more blocks and steals, and is on a team that would fall apart without him. Factor that in with Durant playing better D this year, and he wins.

But Melo should be at least top 5 consideration for the award.

On a bad team. He's a compiler. Those are your typical bad players who get traded for more than they're worth, then in hindsight we all laugh at why he was traded for so much when he sucks.

Compilers on bad teams put up stats that they would otherwise not put up on a more talented team. They compile because someone has to score/rebound/assist. Even terrible teams will have a guy who puts up decent stats. It's basketball, you're not gonna lose by 50 every night.

Remember when Gortat was putting up great numbers? Varejao is Gortat. He's compiling numbers bc his upper tier PG has to create for somebody, and he's the defacto guy on a terrible team who gets that honor.

Some contender will trade for him and he'll underperform and we'll laugh about it.

Yes, but you say it's overrated, then use it in your own argument. If it's overrated, don't use it as support, especially when you incorrectly say Melo is more efficient than Durant.
