They should just change this to the top offensive player. Nothing against Manziel, but Te'o deserved this. He was the heart and soul of the top ranked team. He won games for his team, which is difficult for a pure defensive player. Johnny Football was more exciting to watch, but I think Te'o was a bit more "outstanding." If he can't win it, no defensive player can.

A defensive player can win it IMO but they're going to need a bigger season statistically than Teo had.
Suppose Manti also had 15 sacks, 20-30 TFL and oh, 6-10 defensive TDs by himself this year, then I would have been more open to him winning.

His 2012 season just wasn't spectacular enough to overtake your standard Heisman QB candidate.

The problem for Teo is that his biggest moments were routine tackles. Yes, they were in a crucial situation, but heisman moments tend to be 80 yard runs with stiff arms at the end to win a game or a huge pick six or something. Teo had 0 touchdowns.

It's the biggest reason why no OL will ever sniff the award.

I think being second in the country in interceptions as a linebacker is pretty outstanding. Yeah, it would have been nice if he had a few more sacks, but that isn't their defense.

I think Clowney may have a chance next year. 15+ sacks in the SEC, some of those being strip-sacks, maybe pick a few up for TDs could do it, but even then I doubt it. QBs are just so much sexier.

I think Clowney brings it home next year if healthy. Will have as much hype as any DL we've ever seen going into next season and will back it up unless he gets hurt.

I'm sorry but this is just incorrect. It's silly that Te'o finished 2nd let alone went to New York. Te'o wasn't even the best defensive player this season let alone best overall player. And it's not like Manziel just won it by default either. He was amazing this season and probably would have won more decisively if the hype train for him started earlier.

Mark Ingram and Toby Gerhart were really outstanding in 2010, so it's hard to say Suh got shafted.
