Default Most Surprising and Disappointing Players For Your School

Florida State

Most Surprising
Offense: Menelik Watson, RT. Juco player with less than 10 games under his belt may have been the team MVP on offense. When he left the game there was a noticeable drop in offense production, most notably the second half vs. N.C. State.

Defense: Tank Carradine, DE. We all knew he was extremely talented, but no one could have seen a First Team All ACC season.

Most Disappointing
Offense: E.J. Manuel, QB. If you were to design the prototype QB, he would be damn close to the mold. Against Clemson he showed the promise, then from there just didn't produce at the same level Fisher QBs usually produce at and was the driving force behind the two losses, more or less single handily losing the Florida game with 4 turnovers.

Defense: Christian Jones, LB. Has all of the physical tools and did things that didn't necessarily show up on the stat sheet, but was just underwhelming all season long. NFL value far exceeds his college production.

Surprising: Matt McGloin or Zack Zwinak (I already knew that Allen Robinson was going to be good because I saw spring practice. Zwinak on the other hand wasn't even getting reps during the summer workouts because he was so low on the depth chart)

Disappointment: Bill Belton

Most disappointing by far is James Vandenberg. Leading returning passer in the Big Ten to one of the worst QBs in the country this season leading the worst offense in a BCS conference.

Most surprising is Mark Weisman. Weisman 4 Heisman 2013.

OFFENSE

Surprising: Carlos Hyde. Not that anyone doubted he could do what he did, but no one expected him to get the chance with Jordan Hall being ahead of him on the depth chart before he got injured. The real most surprising part of the offense was how awesome the Offensive Line was, but that is 5 guys, not just one (though shout out to Reid Fragel for having a very good year as our starting RT after being only a TE for 3 years prior).

Disappointing: Jake Stoneburner. Moved to WR, was just another guy. Heuerman and Vannett were good at TE and took a lot of snaps away from Stoneburner.

DEFENSE

Surprising: Zach Boren. Was our starting fullback and one of the best in the nation for 3 years. More than halfway through the season he moves to defense and had a great half year as a middle linebacker. What a great player.

Disappointing: Curtis Grant. Was a 5 star, #2 nationally overall ranked recruit who was supposed to start at MLB this year, didn't do anything early on and was benched and put in the dog house, replaced by Storm Klein and eventually Zach Boren at MLB. Michael Bennett was pretty disappointing this year too b/c he was injured all year and looked like a future all-american DT as a true freshman.

OFFENSE

Surprising: Randall Mackey RB/WR. Was our starting QB for a while last year but just wasn't a big time QB. This year he was moved to an all purpose role and has flourished. Nobody knew what to expect from Mackey, people had on and off the field questions about him, and he is leaving school a fan favorite. Great year. Bo Wallace exceeded expectations as well but Mackey gets the nod.

Disappointing: Korvic Neat WR. People have been thinking he could be the next McCluster since we signed him, but he was unreliable this year. Dropped a lot of passes and didn't make many plays. Still is young so we're not giving up on him, but just had an underwhelming season.

DEFENSE

Surprising: Denzel Nkemdiche DB/LB. Taz was an absolute monster this season as a redshirt freshman. He went from being the #1 recruit in the nations little brother to arguably the best player on our defense. Just an absolute terror, put up crazy numbers this year and was making game changing plays week in and week out.

Disappointing: Charles Sawyer DB. Sawyer is a good player but did not have the huge season people expected. Was the biggest name on our defense going into this season and did not have his best year. Will still be playing in the NFL next year, but an underwhelming season.

Vols

Surprising Offense -
I could go Antonio Richardson here, but he was very highly touted coming out of high school. I could also go with A.J. Johnson. Instead I'll say Zach Rogers. He had a fantastic year in the slot and became much more reliable in his final season. He had been plagued by drops until this year but he probably became our most dependable receiver with regards to sure-handedness. He absolutely dominated South Carolina and might actually get a shot to make an NFL roster now.

Surprising Defense -
It's hard to pick because of how bad the unit played as a whole. But I'll go with Darrington Sentimore. He appears so out of shape, but he made a good amount of plays in the backfield and actually lead the team in sacks rushing from the interior.

Disappointing Offense -
Tyler Bray. Just fell flat in too many big games.

Disappointing Defense -
Everyone.

Michigan

Surprising
Offense: Devin Gardner - Was moved to receiver during fall practice because the coaches felt that Russell Bellomy was just as good of a quarterback and wanted to get Gardner on the field. He was forced to move back to quarterback for the final four game after Denard Robinson got hurt and Russell Bellomy proved he is not a capable BCS-level starter. Gardner went 3-1 and looked very impressive. It looks like he's going to be our best passer since Chad Henne.

Defense: J.T. Floyd - He struggled a lot as a sophomore and junior but really stepped up as a senior. He was easily our most consistent corner after losing Blake Countess in the first game of the season. He held his own against most of the players he faced this year and was better than most fans could've expected.

Disappointing
Offense: Fitzgerald Toussaint - Showed flashes early in his career, despite being constantly injured. He broke out last year and was playing at a very high level. This year he missed the first game of the season due to suspension, struggled to run the ball effectively, and then suffered a season-ending injury.

Defense: Courtney Avery - He played very well as a freshman and was still a solid corner as a sophomore. This past year as a junior, he regressed badly and was consistently beaten. He was eventually benched for Raymon Taylor.

I'm surprised that I'm commenting about Minnesota football.

I'm disappointed that nobody cares.

ND:

Most Surprising:

Offense: Theo Riddick. Not much to be said, here. He had a great year at a new position.

Defense: Prince Shembo. A few of the players on the defense had better seasons, but none of them were all that surprising. Shembo was a very good pass rusher this year, and kind of came out of nowhere to do it.

Most Disappointing:
Offense: Tyler Eifert. Yeah, he had a pretty good season for a TE, but it could have been much better. Much of the blame should be placed on Golson for his lack of targets, but he was a non-factor through much of the games.

Defense: Ishaq Williams. I would have expected him to do what Shembo did this year. He made some plays this year, and provided some solid pressure in big games, but didn't make as much of an impact as I expected. There really wasn't much competition on the defense for disappointments.

i totally agree with this outside of eifert, he had an amazing year, was just used differently.

most dissapointing on offense id probably go with braxton cave or ben koyack

I guess my problem with this was that everyone who wasn't very good on the offense wasn't really a disappointment. Did anyone expect Daniels or Jones to have huge years? No. Did anyone really expect Golson to be an All-American? No. Pretty much every player on the offense either exceeded expectations or met the very low standards expected of them. Eifert essentially won it by default for only being really good when I expected him to be a key factor throughout every game. He disappeared in big stretches through really no fault of his own, which made me feel he could have had a better season and led me to be disappointed.

NCSU:

Most Surprising -
Offense: Quintin Payton - Unheralded recruit stepped in to a starting role this year and led the team in receiving yards. Very sure hands and made some huge plays in the FSU win. Need to find the endzone more next year.
Defense: Juston Burris - 2* safety turned CB really shined in his first season as a starter. Really excited to see where he goes from here.

Most Disappointing -
Offense: Rob Crisp - 5* OT has never lived up to his potential. Constantly hurt. Hopefully he can pull it together next year.
Defense: David Amerson - I think only because his play directly led to two losses (Tenn & Miami). The rest of the year, he was really, really good. But those two losses really hurt the team and cost his coach his job.
