Didn't see that coming. I'll wait for the assistant hires before I reserve judgement.

I would give them credit for being innovative in many respects, but that would not be one thing I would put on their resume. That's been around for a while.

Where were Schefter, Caplan, Breer, Glazer, etc??

All they've done is "confirm" this. I thought they were insiders.

Aren't you already reserving judgement by waiting on the assistant hires? Or did you mean you will wait to pass judgement?

My intial reaction can be swayed by what type of staff he surrounds himself with, knowing the type of offense we wants to play. Plus I'm interested in what direction he goes defensively. A lot of questions still left to be answered.

well the two people that he took to the woodshed every year are doing pretty good in the NFL. No reason to think he can't.

Haurbaugh and Carroll are both way different in their background and experience. One was a former player and the other had former NFL head coaching experience. Both of those guys love the running game and strong defense - Kelly is all about his basketball on grass offense so it will be interesting to see if that works out for him.

Forget the zone-read, offensive scheme stuff. There are two different aspects of his approach that I want to see how he adapts.

A.) His no-huddle, up-tempo approach. At Oregon, he loves to put the pedal to the metal and run green light until the defense breaks. Yellow light is going to be a bigger part of the gameplan in the NFL though, I think. The accumulation of hits and wear-and-tear is too great. Expecting veterans to push the pace for five months of football is far too taxing. And it doesnít give the defense much cover either.

B.) His practices. Iíve heard he runs grueling, intense practices. Practices that often turn into non-stop sprints. Veterans HATE practice. A lot of their bodies are breaking down and itís becoming a week-to-week struggle to just recover in time for the next game. Adding a relentless training camp and practice week to a demanding NFL schedule is going to sap some strength from a squad.

If those elements of his football regimen donít change, the biggest question I have isnít scheme-based. Itís whether the Eagles will be energetic enough to sustain those schemes.

That said, Iím looking forward to see him in the NFL, too.

Crazy that Chip Kelly will be in Philly next season. I hope it turns out well. it will be also interesting to see if they hold onto Vick or not and what his offense is going to look like next year. I just think he won't be able to use similar to Oregon offense he may have to throw in some one back set or I formations. It can't all be in the spread offense .

Apparently his assistants learned of this via media/twitter.

A recruit tweeted "he was just at my house two days ago!!!"

Very much agree with this. A lot of his offense is already run in the NFL. Its how he tweaks his overall philosophy to fit the pro game and how he deals with managing personnel, having only 45 players active on gamedays.

I really believe the NFL, if they're really into promoting player safety, need to look at expanding overall rosters and actives on gameday. 58-60 man rosters, 50-52 active on gamedays allows for less starters to see less time on STs units, as well as rushing injured players back to soon due to lack of depth. Know I veered off topic there but it was something that just caught my attention, thinking how Kelly used a lot of different packages and personnel at Oregon.

Maybe they should have made a call to David Shaw or something. Couldn't they have done a little better?

When David Shaw's name started to be talked about in the NFL he called Stanford himself and redid his deal on his own. That guy is not going anywhere

2 massive points that may well determine his NFL coaching success.

People have mentioned Belichick already in this thread and it is no secret that what the Pats have done this year, and last is due in big part to what he took from meeting with Chip Kelly.

However there is a huge difference in these situations. Belichick has a long, proven track record in the NFL. Guys buy into his approach (the so-called Patriot Way) because it has worked, and worked consistently for over a decade. He also has Tom Brady who is always on the same page as the coach. When Belichick decides to run up tempo practices and really test player's stamina they go hard. They go hard because if they don't they are gone. This is all on Belichick's reputation. When someone joins the Pats they automatically must respect what Belichick does. That doesn't be automatic for Kelly in the pros.

Sure guys can look at Oregon and see the success they had, but it's not proven his offense can work in the NFL. Likewise, Kelly doesn't have the track record of success that makes veteran players automatically buy in. There is also a big question mark at QB. The QB is the leader of the team. Who is the Eagles QB? Do the players look up to this guy? If Nick Foles buys in to Chip does that mean Desean Jackson will? Or Jeremy Maclin? And if they don't what is going to happen to those guys?

What Chip Kelly needs to do to have success with what he has had success with is change the culture in Philadelphia. It's pretty tough to do that. Schiano had success in Tampa Bay this year, however he isn't asking guys to practice harder than ever before.

I think Kelly's offense can have a lot of success if everyone buys in. Not just the no huddle, but a lot of his zone read plays as well. But right now, it's a big if
