So the proposal is that when a team fires a coordinator, they interview a minority candidate to fill the job. That's nice and all, but it's still not going to work for offensive guys. There just aren't enough worthy minority candidates right now.
If implemented, it wouldn't apply to coordinator hires by new head coaches. Florio whines about it, throwing in his two ******* cents that no one wants to hear, as always. It's the right way to do it. New head coaches have their staffs put together before being hired 99% of the time. They can usually tell the person interviewing them who they're bringing with. Nearly every Rooney Rule interview conducted by a new head coach would be a sham.
|
That's the point though, you gotta start somewhere. There aren't enough qualified candidates for those offensive coordinator positions right now (superficially at least, none of us can say that for sure bc we don't work in the industry) but until you start interviewing some of these guys you'll never find out.
It won't provide immediate results but it will definitely help.

To be honest I'm surprised the minority HC issue is such a big deal this offseason. This was just a very weak year for minority coaching candidates compared to other offseasons. David Shaw would have been a popular candidate had he not been so keen on returning to Stanford.
I think everyone here is for equal opportunities, but for people to act indignant about the coaching hires this offseason as if superior minority candidates were ignored for white ones is ridiculous.

I think for most of us, or at least for me, pinpointing why there was such a lack of candidates was part of why it's a big deal.
6 of the 7 coaches coming from the offensive side of the ball is part of it. Minority candidates are underrepresented on that side of the ball in coaching circles. (Only two minority offensive coordinators in the league right now.)
And if you look at some of the prominent black head coaches lately, they're all from the defensive side the ball. (Tony Dungy, Herman Edwards, Lovie Smith, Les Frazier, Raheem Morris, Romeo Crennel, Mike Tomlin...all defense.)
Expanding the Rooney Rule to coordinator positions will help in the long run, but there is no good solution for the short term.

I think this could help a lot actually. Being forced to being in new candidates with fresh ideas could be great for teams looking to develop an offense. And it's so much easier to take a risk on an unknown OC than it is a head coach.
And I agree on the new headcoaching positions. Those guys have pretty good ideas who they would like to bring with them, and the ideas of who to bring with them are likely a part of the reason they get hired. Not really fair to anyone to ask them to conduct sham interviews when the positions are likely promised out already.

Why is the NFL trying to promote this so much? Many minorities have the/been given the opportunity in the past several years. I'm a little surprised that the NFL would rather be putting minority coaches in place who may not be as qualified or as good rather than the guys who are more qualified that are not minorities. Wouldn't that weaken the game? Just a little surprised that the NFL is so intent on doing something right now which may damage the product.
Side note, how many minority coaches have been hired the last ten years?
edit: not saying I am against it and am very much for giving more opportunities to minorities.

Dorsey probably can help get the most out of Cam.
He has been with him since Cam joined IMG Acadamies and got drafted. Apprently helped him learn the playbook.

Congrats Eagles on getting a very good coach. He played a big part in the Dolphins ST's improvement over the last couple years. Believe both years he was there, the ST's ranked in the top ten. Joe Philbin loved the guy.

This was a pretty big argument against the original Rooney Rule. Just saying.
Minorities being under-represented as coaches on the offensive side of the ball is a real thing. But the weird/faux outrage over "sham interviews" is always perplexing because it's never a bad idea to explore options you haven't thought of.
I mean, part of the problem as to why the NFL is so slow to evolve/adapt schematically is because there is so much incest amongst coaching staffs.

Raiders hire Tony Sparano as Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line Coach. I like it personally, a lot of experience.

Lot of well known coaches without jobs right now. Mike Mularkey and Cam Cameron on offense. Dick Jauron and Rob Ryan on defense. Lovie Smith as a HC.
I wonder if any of these guys will at least get assistant jobs, except for Lovie who i expect to take a year off.

All of those guys could presumably take a year off and still get paid by their old teams. Any new jobs they take would offset what their former team owes them by how much they make with a new team.

Has Alan Lowry been picked up yet? The Tits and him parted ways this offseason despite the ST's unit being quite good this year, so I assumed it was Lowry's decision to go (his contract ran out, so he wasn't fired). He's a good ST coordinator, so I figured he'd have had something lined up if he left here.
Same would go for Frank Bush. Our LB's last year were nuts. Akeem Ayers has developed into a stud, and had 4 sacks over the 2nd half of the season. Zach Brown came in as a better athlete than player, but when he finally took over the WLB spot, he was an absolute monster (4.5 sacks, 3 INT's after WK 10). Plus, when healthy, Colin McCarthy has been stalwart as well. But while a lot of that is just talent, I have to believe Bush certainly did his part in their development.
Really bummed the Tits lost these two.

Wash isn't gonna be DL Coach. He's going to be listed as just a defensive assistant. So who knows how much input he'll have on the defense when there's a DC and DL coach outranking him. He may be a "pass-rush coach," like some teams have employed lately. He's basically there to assist the DL coach and help the DL and LB's with their pass-rushing technique. Although, I don't think he's that good of a DL developer. Doesn't really teach technique all that well, in my opinion. I'll always remember the Haynesworth quote about working out with Chuck Smith in the offseason, and Smith blowing Fat Al's mind just by working on his hand-work. Made me wonder what the hell Wash was doing if he's not conveying how to use your hands well.

I love Fairley in it. I'm kind of with BBD on Suh excelling in a read 'n react system, but I still feel that Suh has the talent and ability to excel in any scheme or front. The Wide 9 is a 1-gapper 4-3 scheme, and it employs a NT. AH was the NT in Tennessee, but because he was such a freak, the Tits could play him at NT in a scheme that made you run, run, and run some more. Dude was like 350 lbs., but that also let the Titans run the Wide 9 with KVB and Kearse on the ends almost full time. Fat Al was a one man run defense, so his presence negated the massive liability against the run that the Wide 9 causes. It's why Tennessee's DL, and entire defense altogether, was so great in '07 and '08.
Suh isn't '07 Albert, but he needs to man that NT spot and have a similar effect on the run defense. The Titans didn't have a DT of Fairley's caliber to be the UT, so Detroit has an edge there. The duo of them in the middle should greatly help counteract the tendency for the Wide 9 to be gashed in the run game. Maybe they make Fairley shoot the gap each play, and then ask Suh to engage his two OL's and instead of rushing the passer, try to read the play so he can make a play on the ballcarrier if he needs to. If there's no run and it's a pass, then he has the strength to knock the OL aside a try to get after the QB who'll hopefully be moving around in the pocket trying to avoid Fairley. Not only would this suit Suh greatly, but it would also diminish the liabilities that the Wide 9's aggressiveness causes. Win/win.

Jim Washburn and his butt buddy Jason Babin both turned into insufferable douchebags this past season and the Defensive Line looked night-and-day better when they were both gone.

The Lions already run the Wide 9, so this is nothing new. Fairley has been fine in the scheme and was our best defensive player before getting hurt. Suh has been great as a pass rusher, but he hasn't been able to play the run.

Yeah I was always under the impression that Washburn was the wide 9 Godfather though, so maybe he can teach Suh some techniques that he wasn't being taught?
It's not a good scheme for Suh, its really not. But if he's gonna thrive in it now, this is the time to do it.
