The last year and a half Alex Smith showed he is capable of being a middle of the pack QB who can be a capable starter. That we made the move to Kaepernick has more to do with the upside and talent he has than that Smith played poor. He was playing at a very good level but it's undeniable that Kaepernick has much more upside where with Smith you get what he is. A decent starter that can get a good team deep in the play-offs but won't be the main focus.

Did you know the Saints gave up the most yards of all time this season? Bragging about beating us by 1 score is like bragging about being really good in the MWC. Your team is substantially more talented than ours.
Couldn't even dream of? The 49ers were a punt off of the backup returner's knee away from being in the Super Bowl last year.

Kaepernick is not some scrub QB. He may be unpolished but he has the ability to be one of the best QBs in the league, and played like it at points this year. For the most part Kaepernick did not even outplay Smith this year. Harbaugh kept him in for the upside and because he is Harbaugh's guy, and a few years younger without all of the baggage that Smith has.

It isn't even about being an Alex Smith homer. People continuously give Harbaugh all of the credit for turning Smith around but they ignore that Smith ended 2010 on a streak with eight touchdowns and only two interceptions. Harbaugh obviously helped improve Smith but shouldn't a QB guru coach improve a QB who had only about three seasons worth of play time?

I don't care how good you think the 49ers supporting cast is, Smith's numbers speak for themselves. Since the streak I mentioned earlier started he has 38 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 7.4 YPA, a 64% completion, 96 QB rating, and a 22-6 record.

Smith lead offense in the regular season was actually slightly more productive when they had the ball in the regular season.

Speaking of bad defense. The Packers played one of the worst games could could imagine.
Kaepernick is also the guy who played the Saints this year. 2 TDs were scored by the 49ers defense that game so the box score might mislead others to how he played good not great in that game.

Isn't that exactly what Peyton Manning racked up this year, with everyone calling it an MVP season?

Smith is an accurate capable QB. His arm after the pounding of sacks and surgery isn't great, same as P. Manning. Manning can still be a top 3 QB with all his savvy and xp.

Smith is just somewhere in the top 15 but obviously you can do worse with 32 teams in the NFL.

It's attributing running yards to the QB, ignoring factors like Kendall Hunter getting injured in Kaep's 2nd start, and Gore wearing down as the year comes to an end/no Hunter to split carries with. Not to mention that our team rushing yards are inflated by the Jets game and Bills game, where it would be comical at best to attribute those historically gaudy rushing numbers to some sort of clairvoyant performance by Alex.

There's no doubt that Kaep was a little rougher around the edges. I was hesitant about going away from a steady veteran like Alex at first but it was evident from the first start that Kaep did things Alex couldn't do, and after a few weeks i think it was clear who the best QB was, even before the playoffs. Now the playoffs have cemented it.

Yes, it might happen anyway but why guarantee that it will happen.
I think Smith gets a bit of a bad rap as to what he's capable of. He was good enough to get his team to the Superbowl after the 2011 season and I have seen nothing in the playoffs that tells me he wouldn't be there this year.

In Smith's games this year the Defense was still on point for the most part. In 5 of Smith's 6 wins the games were close to locked up around half-time. No reason to keep throwing to rack up more passing yards and points.
And also when Hunter got a good chunk of his carries and yards. In clock burning garbage time.

So could Michael Vick or Newton. Romo, Stafford and Cutler are also talented. But too often screw themselves.
Plugging in Kaepernick has always been just as much good luck as coach know-how.

Did I just read that right? Let's calm down people, Alex Smith is not a top 15 qb in this league.

Alex Smith sucks.

Alex Smith sucks.
He performed like one with Harbaugh. Can another QB coach/OC/HC maximize his potential like Harbaugh did?

I believe Norv Turner could, maybe not to the same extent as Harbaugh. Alex had his best year under Norv pre-Harbaugh. Although i know Lombardi doesn't like Alex. I believe he said that if he took the 49ers GM job, he would have explored Brian Hoyer as a possible trade opportunity.

With rookie QB's making a huge impact lately i'm sure many GM's/coaches are going to try to find their next Andy Dalton, Russel Wilson, and Colin Kaepernick (none drafted in the 1st round, all starters), alongside KC/JAX likely making QB a priority at 1/2.

Any team looking to make Alex a long-term starter is making a mistake, but he's good enough to compete with another QB/be short-term insurance, and CLE makes the most sense in that regard if they can convince Lombardi to take him on.

No he didn't.

Please let's stop this. I thought the fact that he was benched this season was enough proof that he sucks.

Alex Smith is a game manager and would do well in a situation with a team that has a good defense and a good running game. I wouldn't mind him over Weeden, especially being coached by Norv and Chud. He's also younger...

He's a glorified bus driver at this point.

I know this is a draft scouting place but eventually production should matter.

Smith was top 10 in passing efficiency last year. 2nd and 3rd WR were injured/cut.
61% completion while having the 3rd worst drop rate in the NFL.

2012 he stepped up and the team around him stepped up. Was completing 70% of his passes. Not a soft 70%. Yards Per Att was 7.97 and not much boosted by 2 fluke plays or defense falling on it's face. His 2 long passes were 50 some yards not 75+

Why so defensive brah? I'm not saying he IS a top 15 QB. But he still had a good year with SF. Kaep is just better as a passer (for reasons that have been beaten to death) along with an added threat as a runner. My post was more about praising Harbs for the work he does with QB's but its evident you read 1 line and got offended.

He was having his best year. I doubt he all a sudden turned into a bad QB just on Harbaugh's say so.

Are you living in 2009 or something? Even then it would be hard to believe because Smith wasn't that low after 2009. The only time Smith has ever been a bottom 10 starter was his rookie season and maybe his second season.

No, he got benched because Harbaugh thought Kaepernick would be better and THEN Kaep played out of his mind.

I'd say probably right in the middle as far as NFL QBs go. One can argue whether he could win a Super Bowl or whether he's making too much money but he'll be in the discussion for a lot of teams needing a QB for next year.
