Put Jay Cutler in the same situation and I don't think you have Kaep leading them in the playoffs.

I heard this in 2011 and 2012 from 49ers fans. Maybe they were too jaded but what wasn't a maybe is their wrongness back then.

Even so the 95 passer rating over the past 2 years is a QB you can win with. Not gonna be a fantasy football star but 200 some yards a game 1.5 TDs can work in an offense with a balanced approach.

Alex Smith was kept out by 2 horrible blunders by the punt returner Kyle Williams. Had Williams torn his knee last year instead of this year, Alex would have played against NE in that Super Bowl last season.
Smith played terrible in the NFC Championship game last year. Only 1 pass completion to a WR and that was for 3 yards. I don't think he converted one 3rd down either on a pass attempt. He was kept out by his terrible play along with Williams.

Really? See the game over, and look at the box score.
He was 1-9 throwing to Crabtree and Williams.
Crabtree was not the same Crabtree as he was this year, and Williams should never be a #2 WR.
Those WR's sucked.... you wonder why they drafted a WR high, signed Randy Moss and Mario Manningham? Hello.....

Again, you seem to have forgotten how your big blue Giants got to the Super Bowl last year..... it was a gift from the punt returner.

Perhaps you forgot that in that NFC Title game, Alex Smith was better than Elisha Manning.

Both QB's had 2 TD passes, 0 Ints.
Manning avg'd 5.4 per attempt, Smith avg'd 7.5.
Manning's passer rating was 82.3, Smith's was 97.6.
Both team's leading RB had 74 yards rushing (Bradshaw & Gore).
Alex Smith added 42 yards rushing, to Eli's -2.

It's pretty funny that you put it all on the QB for the loss, even though the SF quarterback played at least as well as the NY QB.

Even more funny is you saying Smith was not good enough to win it all. No chance. Why are you the way you are?

you know what's REALLY funny? Eli Manning got the CRAP kicked out of him that game. Do people forget how much San Fran DOMINATED the Giants up front? BUT IT'S NOT IN THE BOX SCORE

Alex Smith did absolutely nothing that game. Eli didn't either, but Smith wasn't destroyed like Eli was. If you remember anything about the game, you know that.

Oh, and the niners were guaranteed gonna score on that possession if Williams didn't fumble, that's for sure

Alex Smith is what he is. There's no further development. I've said it before, just bc this is the first year in like 10 years that an elite qb isn't in the SB doesn't make it a good idea to build your team with this blueprint in mind. If anything it illustrates the opposite point: that it's much more difficult to succeed in this model vs the other.
Why is Flacco still a developing QB but not Smith? They have both played in 80 games, Flacco actually has started more games than Smith, and Smith is only a year older.

It's clearly not. BC HIS HC BENCHED HIM IN FAVOR OF ANOTHER QB WITH HIGHER UPSIDE.

Clearly, if Smith's play was good enough to win the whole thing, no HC in their right mind would make that move. Why is this so difficult to understand? If Alex Smith could win it all, he'd be starting right now. He's not.

His coach tried replacing him in the offseason. Didn't work. Then had to fumble around and pretend he was down with Alex Smith. Then the second Kaepernick shows that he's capable of starting, he benches Smith.

Does that sound like something you do to a qb who could win it all?

Come on guys. Seriously.
The coach tried to replace him with arguable the greatest QB of all-time, hardly an indictment on Smith's play especially when you consider that both QBs were free agents. You have a good shot at two QBs, one an all-time great and the other a middle-of-the-pack starter. Which one do you go for first? Almost every team in the league would have done the same thing if they currently didn't have a starting QB on the roster.

Kaepernick replaced Smith because Harbaugh felt that he gave the 49ers enough to win the Super Bowl as well, not because he felt like they could with Kaepernick but could not with Smith.

Flacco played 5 years. Alex Smith has been in the league for 8. There's no more development for a 8 year player.

Are you kidding me right now? Smith was sacked half as many times as Eli, true, but he also dropped back less than half as many times. The 49ers offensive line was getting eaten alive. Smith was running for his life on almost every dropback and Frank Gore managed a whopping 74 yards on 16 carries. Not to mention that Smith had Brett Swain in for >50% of that game while Eli was throwing to two of the best receivers in the league.

Eli is massively better than Smith. It isn't even funny how much better Eli is and I never said anything about Smith being the next Eli. But using the NFCCG last year as your support is ridiculous.

Flip your schit around then regarding Vernon Davis.
His numbers dramatically decreased when Kaepernick took over.... so by your brilliant logic, that must be bc Kaepernick sucks.

You're an idiot, and a douchbag.
But also quite funny because you actually think you're pretty smart.

The Overtime fumble, obviously, christ.

Oh. He did enough to win the game? GOOD THING HE WON THE GAME.

no, no no no no no. WHAT. The Niners front is SO much better than the Giants' as a whole and the difference in offensive lines is incredible. You can't be serious with that. Take that box score that you're fellating. How many WR's had a catch? Smith was absolutely incapable of making the throws to beat the Giants D. It was obvious from the game. He had SO much more time than Eli. But hey, the box score says stuff so let's follow it religiously. EL OH EL

No. His #s increased bc Alex Smith sucks.

And please don't ever discuss football with me again. You're a complete moron.

I won't even waste my time responding to the rest of it.
On the flip side, Davis' numbers decreased because Kaepernick sucks. Crabtree has massively improved his route-running, catching and YAC this year. It is obvious to anyone watching the games. Crabtree has half as many drops on the same amount of targets and has 1.2 more YAC/reception. Maybe that has something to do with Crabtree's increase in production? But the drops and Crabtree going down on first contact were probably all on Alex Smith, right?

His coach tried replacing him in the offseason. Didn't work. Then had to fumble around and pretend he was down with Alex Smith. Then the second Kaepernick shows that he's capable of starting, he benches Smith.

Does that sound like something you do to a qb who could win it all?

Come on guys. Seriously.
This. So much this. Since Harbaugh was hired, the 49ers did this:

1. Drafted CK.
2. Tried to sign Peyton Manning.
3. Benched Smith the first chance they got.

There's a certain segment of 49ers fans (certainly not all of them) who just don't see this.

And Bradshaw had the same on 4 more carries. What's that have to do with anything? Eli was also throwing to the studly threats of Henry Hynoski, Jake Ballard, Bear Pascoe, Travis Beckum and Brandon "stone hands" Jacobs.

The Niners D all around are such a better D than the Giants, but hey, JMike's box score says differently. Re-watch the game. While we put decent pressure on Smith, he had loads more time than Eli. Also, Alex is more elusive than Eli. He can escape pressure better. When Eli's got Justin Smith blowing up Kevin Boothe, that's a whole different story. JMike's just throwing out stats and nt actually factoring the whole football game thing

Smith was injured and not even throwing the ball for two of those years. How can you expect a player to develop when they can't practice and their coaches hate them or are awful? The only decent OC that Smith had from 2007-2010 was Mike Martz and he reportedly tried to ignore Smith.

Harbaugh drafted a QB who he thought had the potential to be great, nothing wrong with that. 49ers fans, at least speaking for myself, always expected CK to take over eventually. Smith was just a placeholder. I have already addressed the Peyton situation and in regards to benching Smith the first chance he got it simply isn't true. If Harbaugh thought Kaepernick was the better option then he would have started him from the beginning of the year. He wouldn't have even resigned Smith. He could have benched Smith after the Giants game and no one would have batted an eye.

Four whole carries more? Wow. If Bradshaw had 16 carries he would have had a whole 14 yards less than Gore. Watch out for that 14 yards.

Don't even try to argue who had the better targets because it was Eli and it wasn't close. You know that.

Look at what the Giants defense did leading up to that game. They had been suffocating the last four games. They shut out the Falcons and held Aaron Rodgers and Tony Romo to almost nothing. They held the Patriots to only 17 points. I think you are underestimating how good the Giants defense was playing in the postseason.

My point was to counter your point on a ground game. Don't act like the Giants had this saving grace ground game. And I think you're severely underestimating how much havoc the niners front 7 caused on the Giants. Perhaps a bit revisionist history on your part. I vividly remember Eli just getting the hell knocked out of him whenever he dropped back

Ok guys, arguing this is leading nowhere bc both sides feel strongly about their opinions and nothing said will change that.

So why not just wait until next year plays out, and we'll see how Alex Smith does with his new team? And if the Smith supporters are right, bump this thread.

If he sucks, then admit he sucks. Simple solution right?

The 49ers weren't running the ball super effectively, either, and that was my point.

I don't deny that Eli was getting destroyed. The 49ers were all over him on a lot of his dropbacks and he took a lot of big hits. But Smith was under just as much pressure.

The fact is that neither offense was going to do anything to win that game. It was going to come down to whoever made the last mistake, and that was the 49ers.
