Alex Smith's numbers coincide with winning football games. Matt Moore? Can't say the same.

Yes, because obviously if you put Alex Smith throwing for fewer yards and fewer scores than Moore on last year's Dolphins they win 7 more games to be 13-3 like the Niners.

Also, Vince Young is now an all-time great. Check out that winning percentage. Better than Brett Favre, Drew Brees, Kurt Warner, Dan Marino, and Don McNabb. Thank you for driving us right off the rails.

See Brody's gif? Yeah. He saw that you went full meatball on that one. "Derrrrr hey John, long time listener, first time caller. I wanna know why we don't trade for Timmy Tebow? He just wins games!"

Yeah bc I said Vince young was better? Shut up dude. You're an idiot.

You're bringing up Alex smiths bad seasons but don't mention what he's done lately. He only got better this year.

And to say Matt Moore would be better in the niner offense is moronic. Not to mention you projected his stats IF he had as many stats as Stafford.

Fact is: you and I both don't know how he'd be in different situations. Joe Philnin expressed interest in Alex Smith last year with Matt Moore on te roster.

You used wins as a QB stat. Made your bed, lie in it, my friend.

I very clearly have brought up what he's done lately. Meanwhile, you said Matt Moore failed when he became a starter in 2010, therefore he is a backup...complegtely ignoring the other two seasons he was a starter and moved the offense successfully. You used his one bad (half) season as the thing to condemn him to a lifetime of being a backup, so I quite fairly pointed out that Alex Smith was terrible for considerably longer than Moore.

Quote:
And to say Matt Moore would be better in the niner offense is moronic.
Explain why. Last year, Moore and Smith had similar production despite Smith having a better team.

Quote:
Not to mention you projected his stats IF he had as many stats as Stafford.
No, not if he had as many "stats" as Stafford. Rather, if his coordinator called as many passes as Stafford's. Scott Linehan calling more passes than Brian DaBoll doesn't mean that Matt Stafford was better in 2012 than Matt Moore was in 2011. Higher completion %, higher TD %, lower INT %, higher YPA, etc, etc.

Quote:
Fact is: you and I both don't know how he'd be in different situations. Joe Philnin expressed interest in Alex Smith last year with Matt Moore on te roster.
Let me follow that logic...the Seahawks signed Matt Flynn, therefore he's better than Russell Wilson.

Longhorns Legend mentioned 22 quarterbacks. You have an issue with the bottom 6. So you are conceeding 16 QBs are better than Smith.

What has Rivers done? His worst yardage season as a starter is better than Smith's best. His worst TD season is 3 more TDs than Smith's best. His career completion percentage is better than any season Smith had except this last season. He has a much better winning percentage. More playoff apperances. More playoff wins. Smith is not better than Rivers.

What has Dalton done? He made the playoffs his first two seasons. It took Smith 7 seasons to make his first playoffs. His numbers in his first two seasons are better than anything Smith has done in his entire career. Smith is not better than Dalton.

I'll give you Tannehill, Freeman, and Bradford. I don't think he is better than them and I am certain those teams wouldn't trade their QBs for Smith.

That leaves us with Cutler. Physically, there is no question. Cutler blows Smith out of the water. Smith will probably have less turnovers than Cutler. But Cutler can do more by himself. San Francisco had good coaching, a solid running game, a very good defense, and the best offensive line in the game. Cutler had no weapons until this season, a good running game, horrible offensive coordinators, and a bottom-five offensive line. Take Cutler away from the Bears (like what has happened the last few seasons) and the Bears are one of the worst teams in the league. Take Smith away from the 49ers, they make the Super Bowl. Smith is not better than Cutler.

So by my count, that is 19 better than Smith. So at best, Smith is the 20th best QB in the league. And other teams like Minnesota, Tampa bay, Miami, and St. Louis wouldn't trade their younger QBs for Smith.

i have an idea, let's all rage and argue about hypothetical scenarios for the purpose of coming up with some arbitrary bleacher report-esque ranking system; afterwards we can rehash a lebron/kobe debate

Rivers has been really down the last 2 years, but I think the situation out there has a lot to do with it. He can still dominate a game.

I have a huge issue with the bottom six. I don't see how any of them can be ahead of Smith at this point. I would put him ahead of a couple more of them.

Rivers has been awful recently, though. He has kept a fairly decent Chargers team out of the playoffs the last two years with stupid and awful mistakes that have nothing to do with the team around him.

Quote:

Smith made the playoffs in his second full season starting, if you want to get technical, and Dalton was not better last year or this year than Smith was last year. Dalton also has a very good defense supporting him and one of the best receivers in the league to throw to.

I think you may want to go look a few pages back where we discussed Cutler vs. Smith. Even when Smith had a bad offensive line and just as bad if not worse offensive coordinators, in 2009 and 2010, he was still just as good as Cutler was this year. Cutler, over the past three years, attempts two more passes per game with a massive eight more passing yards per game than Smith. And Cutler has had a better defense and running game than Smith, plus this year he had one of the best receivers in the NFL. In Smith is nothing more than a bus drive than so is Cutler.

No, that is BS argument. He didn't begin 2005 as the starter, so we'll ignore that. He started every game in 2006 and went 7-9. In 2007, he started 7 games and went 2-5. Even if Smith stayed healthy, the 49ers aren't making the playoffs. Yes, he didn't start in 2008 because he was injured, but he was beaten out by JT O'Sullivan. 2009, he lost to Shaun Hill. At one point in 2010, he was behind Troy Smith.

Yes, 2011 was only the second time he started 16 games, but it was because he was constantly injured and lost out to the great J.T. O'Sullivan, Shaun Hill, and Troy Smith. Most people on this board don't even think Dalton is that good and you are the only person here that would take Smith over him.

If you put Cutler in SF, they never draft CK and they'd have probably won at least one Super Bowl in the past two years.

Screw stats. Cutler is just better.

Cutler is a hot head who commits a ton of turnovers and is extremely inconsistent, most of his success has come with Brandon Marshall, and 49 receivers have been awful until this past year.

He only started three games in 2007 before separating his shoulder. He got the injury on the first play of his fourth start that year and then started three more games before they realized the injury was a grade three separation.

He was injured in 2008 and didn't start all 16 games in 2009 or 2010, though admittedly 2009 was not because of injury. The 49ers actually probably would have made the playoffs had he not gotten injured in 2010. They only had to win one more game and they likely would have beaten the Rams the second time if Smith played. Troy Smith was awful, something like 7/20 iirc.

He only really lost out to Shaun Hill of that group, the other two only even played because of his injury. That really has nothing to do with him now, though. Smith has improved by leaps and bounds this then.

And I disagree. Cutler, at times, looks like one of the best QBs in the game. But more often he just makes boneheaded plays that an NFL QB should not make. I would rather have a QB that is consistently average or a little above it over one that goes from great to terrible in the span of three plays.

People here have bought heavily into a Jay Cutler narrative that isn't even really true.

I know he looks like a douchebag so the first instinct is to hate, but if you watch him play a significant number of snaps, you're going to be high on him.

When you see Johnny Knox and Devin Hester literally fall down on a combined total of four routes in one game while the ball is in the air, you're gonna understand where the bulk of those INTs come from.

When you see Johnny Knox and Devin Hester literally fall down on a combined total of four routes in one game while the ball is in the air, you're gonna understand where the bulk of those INTs come from.

Jay Cutler has way too many flaws in his game for a 7 year veteran. Plenty of his poor play/ lack of production can be blamed on supporting cast, but it still doesn't excuse his play entirely. He is what he is at this point.

Screw stats. Cutler is just better.
I don't think so. Who was it at that said Cutler reminds them of Jeff George? That comparison isn't starting to look as farfetched to me. If you press Cutler he'll make some bad decisions and turn the ball over. He has a much better arm than a lot of guys in the NFL, but he makes some bad decisions at times. In San Francisco with a better offensive line, I still wouldn't be too keen on him leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl. I'm a Cutler fan, but I don't think he's any better than say Joe Flacco for instance.

Flacco is good enough to know when to trust his receivers (and admittedly has a better offense around him).

Flacco is honestly probably my least favorite player in the NFL, but at least he knows when to just toss the ball up, and figured out in the playoffs that Anquan Boldin is one of the most reliable pass catchers in the game right now.

I think this whole comparison of QBS and ranking is pretty stupid, no one knows how everyone would do in different situations with different coaches and personnel around them. I mean, so far the knock on Smith was that he came in and did well with Harbaugh etc. and was never asked to do much but check down or whatever.

However, he did what he was asked to do and did it extremely well. He managed games very well and played to his teams strengths. Would Peyton Manning have won the super bowl for the 9ers? Probably, but that shouldn't take away from someone still playing well in the situation they have been placed in.

I agree to a point with Cutler. His offensive line is horrid. He barely can finish a drop back without getting hit.

However, he needs to handle his emotions on the field. Playing QB is a mental game. He loses composure to easily and then gets to gunslinging mode.

I could see the Eagles sending their #4 overall pick to the 49ers for Alex Smith.

I'm not saying it would be a good decision necessarily, but I could see it being done.

I'm sorry, but there is no universe in which a QB who has started what, 10 total games? is better than Jay Cutler. It just isn't true. And once people figure out the pistol I think we'll see a decline in effectiveness from that SF offense.

Yeah, that isn't enough to give up for the great Alex Smith.
