With Kolb, you'd save his base salary (9M) + his 2013 roster bonus (2M) + his 2013 workout bonus (0.5M) - his remaining signing bonus (6M)

9M + 2M + 0.5M - 6M = 5.5M

On Snyder, it's harder to say. It doesn't specify what that 100k bonus each year is. I'm guessing it's a workout bonus with how small it is. Those aren't guaranteed if you cut him early enough each year. Cut him before he works out, he doesn't get it.

With Snyder, you'd save his base salary (2.9M) + his 2013 workout bonus (0.1) - his remaining signing bonus (4M)

2.9M + 0.1M - 4M = -1M

Yeah, you actually lose a million of cap room if you cut Snyder's turrible ass. That's really insult added to injury.

If you wait until after June 1st, you can spread the accelerated bonuses out over two years. You can only do that with two players per year, though. Unfortunately, they might get roster or workout bonuses before that time, too.

LOL! I can't believe Kelsay & McGee have survived this far.

Bills should cut Fitzpatrick, Smith, Kelsay, Barnett, McGee, Wilson & Lindell. You could talk me into keeping Barnett & Wilson since they're in the last years of their contract & if we draft right they'd be good depth.

Let Jackson, Thigpen, Rinehart, Johnson, Merriman & Scott walk.

Anyone that feels bad about not being able to cut any player can be cheered up just by looking at the Jets.

-If Mark Sanchez plays for the Jets all season, his cap number is 12.8M
-If Mark Sanchez is cut before June 1st, his cap number is 17.15M
-If the Jets find someone dumb enough to trade for Sanchez and pay his entire 2013 salary (trolololol), his Jets cap number is still 8.9M
-If Mark Sanchez is cut after June 1st, his cap number is 12.35M...and he bites them again in 2014 for 4.8M

Mike Tannenbaum r genius.

Yeah, I can agree on Barnett and Wilson. We could/should be drafting their replacements this year, but I would not at all mind them being here.

Lions are in better shape after their recent cuts but they still need to extend or restructure Stafford's deal. He is counting 20 million against the cap next season.

It'll have to be an extension. They've already restructured him twice and it's resulted in a giant mess. They did so much that his cap numbers for the remainder of the deal are all crippling.

2013: 20.8M (8.32M Guaranteed)
2014: 19.3M (8.32M Guaranteed)
2015: 17.2M (2.27M Guaranteed)

Not really any room to push more money back. The best they could do now is to convert 11M of 2013 base salary into a signing bonus, which would move 3.7M to 2014 and 3.7M to 2015, which would result in this:

2013: 13.4M (12.02M Guaranteed)
2014: 23.0M (12.02M Guaranteed)
2015: 20.9M (5.97M Guaranteed)

Even an extension is going to be rough. He's still got almost 19M in guaranteed money left on his current deal. They're gonna end up giving him like 60M guaranteed to get it done.

Will Smith: 14,541,666
Jon Vilma: 8,682,500
Roman Harper: 7,100,000

Equal: 30,324,166

Which would make us $15 mil under the cap. Restructure Evans and Greer and we would be looking very pretty.

Cutting a player doesn't just eliminate his entire cap number. You're not taking into account the penalties for their signing bonuses and prior restructures that gave them other guaranteed money.

Cutting Will Smith would only save 5.7M.

Cutting Vilma only saves 5.98M.

Cutting Harper only saves 3.6M.

Total: 15.28M. About half of what you'd hoped.

Restructuring Evans would save you a max of 4.5M this season, but would make future seasons even worse.

Restructuring Greer would save you a max of 1.75M this season.

Even after doing all of this, you wouldn't have enough money to sign your draft picks.

Oh, I forgot one. Sanchez's contract contains absolutely no language providing for a salary offset.

Translation: If they cut him, accepting that 17.15M cap number, and someone else signs him for any amount...even if it's more than that 17.15M, they still pay 100% of what they were going to pay, anyway. He'd get to double-dip. The lengths they went to to pump up his self-esteem after trading for Tebow are really incredible in the short-term.

Monomach you seem pretty good at understanding this stuff. I was hoping to get your insight on the Michael Griffin contract. It says he got $15m guaranteed, $9 million of that was his signing bonus and his 2012 base salary was guaranteed. He's due a $1m bonus in the next Friday, so what would it cost us/save us to cut him before then?

I've seen articles claiming that he could be cut because of that fully-guaranteed base salary and roster bonus, but they all ignore his signing bonus. He's got 7.2M of it left. If he's a pre-June 1st cut, which he'd have to be to avoid the stuff you mentioned, he'd actually cost 7.2M against the 2013 cap...900k more than it costs to keep him.

Basically, if he's cut, it won't be because his cap number is too big; it'll be because Bud Adams decided that 4.5M of actual cash savings going right to his pocket outweighs the chance of Griffin rebounding.

Basically, if he's cut, it won't be because his cap number is too big; it'll be because Bud Adams decided that 4.5M of actual cash savings going right to his pocket outweighs the chance of Griffin rebounding.
Thanks, so basically put a good SS next to him and try to improve the pass rush and hope for the best lol

Pretty sure the latest cuts have the giants more than 8 mil under the cap, with more cuts and restructurings to come.

Given that they have an $18 million cap reduction, the Redskins figure is not that bad.

They need to work the Dollars to try and help the Secondary not going to be easy but possible.

Does this account for the finalized cap adjustments that teams may or may not accept?

The only good way to do it is draft picks... So, their first picks will probably be in the secondary.

We would be on the hook for 6.8 million to Smith over the next two years. At the rate the leauge uses, it would equate to 3.8 this year if we cut him. That is 11 million right there. Salaries do get pro-rated, incentive bonuses are cut outright, so peppering a salary with bonuses is a way teams can slash numbers quick on players who they foresee as being cap casualties.
