I don't think we have one.

And even if we did, why can't we have more than 1?

I mean, I suppose you could. I imagine if we did have a current assistant head coach they might be offended though.

Nonetheless it probably won't happen anyways.

I still can't believe he its nor brought on a staff yet. I really hope we don't extend fewell after this season. Can you imagine I'd he gets a 2/3 year extension.

Unless we have a top 10 overall D this year there's no way he gets an extension.

hell, if we're a top 10 D, he may get a HC job somewhere! win-win

Depends. You know how loyal Coughlin is to his staff. The only guys he willfully fired were Waufle (who I miss) and Sheridan, bc the defense was about to revolt on Sheridan and he had no choice. And he had to let go of Waufle bc he got too close to his players and didn't grade them properly, which almost caused a revolt by Osi.

We kill Sheridan but Fewell has actually been worse than Sheridan. Think about that. That's how bad Fewell has been.

The most likely way I see Spags here is as consultant or assistant head coach.

Greg Williams brought in LeBeau as a one year ast head coach in buffalo after being fired in cincinnati before he returned to the steelers.

There is a lot of merit in it. Firstly we need to shake up our defense and having a guy like Spags in the brains trust is an asset.

Secondly Spags knows a lot of our players, coaching staff and schemes, a one year deal to rebuild his coaching stock would be good for him. We are only one year removed from winning it all and are a playoff calibre team. Plus he has had proven success here under Coughlin.

The only real con would be if Fewell felt he was being undermined. But I don't think that is an issue.

Is Thomas Davis an option at OLB in free agency

Davis did have 3 ACL tears in 3 years, but he did come back quite strong last year:
15 GP, 12 starts, 105 tackles (70 solo, 35 ast), 3 PD, 1 Int, 2 FF

It seems like he could be a good cheap option at LB. He also seems to get on well with Terrell Thomas.

It's actually a pretty good DT fa class. I like vickerson a lot. We have some cheap able bodies available in fa that opens up the draft for us. I'm interested in some of those guys.

I'd like to see what Glenn Dorsey's got if he can come reasonably priced. I think he can play well on our line, next to Linval.

I hope he doesn't. Even with a top 10 defense, I want us to change the page on him. His scheme isn't a good fit for us overall. I thank him for getting his act together for that Sb run. That saved his job, but I am actually ready to change the page.

I never liked him. I thought he was a pass rush specialist, who reminded me of Simeon Rice. DF was way over rated as a player and wasn't a complete DE like a Strahan, Tuck, Allen or Trent Cole

As a fan base that's got to enjoy Osi we can't **** on Freeney, cause frankly Osi hasn't even been as good as Freeney at defending the run in over 5 years.

It's a shame Osi stopped playing the run. I remember way back in like 05 or 06, back before Osi's knee injury and when Walter Jones was still dominant, we played Seattle and Osi was just bursting past Jones or tossing him aside to shut down the run to his side on almost every play. I had never seen Jones get beaten like that time and time again, and I still haven't seen an end of ours dominate the way Osi did back then since, not Tuck during the first SB run or JPP during the latest one, that Osi was ferocious. Then he realized he'd still get paid big bucks and hold up better if he just focused on getting strip-sacks and we end up with current day osi.

My current thinking on our needs as we head into free agency are:

1. OT
2. LB
3. DE
4. CB
5. DT
6. TE
7. OG

With Beatty off contract and our issues at RT, OT has to be the top priority

LB has to be the second priority, we need to upgrade this position, although the front office might like to build around Herzlich, Williams and Paysinger

we need to imporve our CB dpeth; this may become higher depending on what happens with Webster.

DT is a need, but I don't see it as a priority (unfortunately)

TE is a possible need if Bennett isn't resigned.

G is a position we would like to upgrade, but not likely a priority.

It's interesting we seem to differ so much, especially since I value your knowledge and opinion a lot. I think we re-sign Beatty (it seems to be our top priority I read somewhere, which makes sense) and him and Brewer and a vet (Locklear? Diehl?) as a backup swing seems to be pretty good. I think we've got faith in Brewer and I wanna see what he can do.

I do agree on LB, but I'd put it at 3 behind DE and DT, maybe even 4 behind CB depending on what we do. Free agency will shake all of this up, obviously

I think we've got faith in Brewer and I wanna see what he can do.

I am qualifying this based on what I expect to happen, and what we can afford.

I expect we move Kiwi to DE, giving us three veteran DEs. We also have Trattou, Ojomo and Tracy who can fit as the 4th/5th DEs. Sure this is something we would like to upgrade, but we aren't going to be able to afford a big name free agent. This is definately a position we want to upgrade, just not priority need. (With that said, I would be very happy to trade up for Ansah in the draft.)

At DT I expect a cheap FA, maybe Dorsey or Hill to be signed. With Jospeh, Rogers, Kuhn and Austin we are solid. We don't prioritise DT as much as DE in general.

At LB, there is a chance we bring back Chase. But we are still likely to need a couple of LBs. We really need, speed, athleticism and tackling ability. This is the area we need to improve the most, but likely won't be a huge investment in resources.

CB is a real need, we have Amukamara and if Webster's back, he can be solid but Hosley is still raw. We need to add CB depth.

Then OT, sure I hope Beatty returns, but it does depend on the price. Boothe will only return if he is cheap.
Even if Beatty is back, we need to likely look at replacing Diehl and Locklear.
We do have Brewer whom the front office is fairly high on, but it is a big step up. Even if Brewer can start, we have no depth at either tackle spot. (We are hoping that Mosley and McCants can develop but there is a ways to go at the moment)
Even if Diehl returns, you don't want him protecting Eli's blindside (and Beatty has has issues with injury at times), so who steps up? At this stage our backup LT is likely Brewer.

Last year we didn't adequately replace Kareem McKenzie; Locklear and Diehl were ok as stop gaps, but Diehl is not the player he used to be and Locklear had that nasty knee injury.

Currently we have Brewer, who may or may not be able to step in.
Don't forget Brewer becomes an RFA after the season as well.

I think Brewer is a big key. i think it'd be nice if we envision him as a starter and give him a longer contract extension now at an obviously cheap price. a 3 year extension at under a mil per or so would make sense for both parties. I just really won't a defensive overhaul

I want a defensive overhaul as well. It's all going to be about bang for buck and the best use of our resources.

You have to remember that we tend to use free agency to plug holes and look at the draft to build for the future.

There is no need to extend Brewer now (particularly when we are so tight with cash), we can get him on his cheap deal then an original round RFA tender next year.

You can't accuse Reese for failing to invest in defense. The Giants spent $68.8 million (57 percent) of their 2012 salary cap on defense. That is more money than every NFL team except the Denver Broncos ($70.6 million) spent on defense.

This year we have four key offensive players to resign: Beatty, Bennett, Cruz and Nicks. If we can resign all four we will be doing quite well.

If we can resign those four, the only area we need to look at in the draft is the Oline. We either need a top talent or a couple of mid round developmental guys. The problem with the latter is that they take time.

Most of our holes are on defense. We will need a few vets to plug holes, but most of the defensive overhaul will come through the draft. I think most of our draft picks will go on defense.

I have two targets in the first round who I think would be ideal fits for the Giants. The first is Ezekiel Ansah (who I would be happy to trade up for) and the second is DJ Fluker.

My thinking on Fluker is that he is the mauler style RT we had with McKenzie and could compete with Brewer. If he beats out Brewer, then Brewer comes the swing tackle job, backing up both spots. If Brewer beats out Fluker, we can slot Fluker into LG and immediately upgrade the left side of our line.
