Default 2013 Round 1 Mock Draft, February 19

1. Kansas City: Luke Joeckel [OT, TAMU]
The Chiefs want to move LOT Branden Albert to guard. Joeckel allows them to do that.

2. Jacksonville: Geno Smith [QB, WVU]
The team says they will stick with Blaine Gabbert. But in the NFL, people say a lot of things. The read option makes it's AFC debut with Smith.

3. Oakland: Bjoern Werner [DE, FSU]
The native of Germany brings a semblance of a pass rush to the Silver and Black.

4. Philadelphia: Star Lotulelei [NT, Utah]
The Eagles will have a 3-4 defense, and currently their only nose tackle is Antonio Dixon. Never heard of Dixon? Me neither.

5. Detroit: Jarvis Jones [DE, Grg]
Often a rookie defender has to make an adjustment from a 4-3 to a 3-4. If Jones goes to the Lions, he will do the opposite. But scouts say he can play in either one.

6. Cleveland: Dee Milliner [CB, Ala]
Sheldon Brown isn't the same player in Cleveland that he was in Philadelphia, so an upgrade at corner is needed.

7. Arizona: Mike Glennon [QB, NCSU]
This is another reach for a quarterback (like Geno Smith), but I get the feeling there will be a few of those. Glennon will wear a red jersey and white helmet like he did in Raleigh.

8. Buffalo: Damontre Moore [ER, TAMU]
New DC Mike Pettine has said he will bring to Buffalo the 4-3/3-4 combo defense he used in Baltimore. Moore would play the edge rusher spot that Terrelle Suggs plays with the Ravens.

9. New York Jets: Dion Jordan [ELB, Or]
The Jets won't be bringing back two of their edge linebackers, Calvin Pace and Bart Scott (who lined up next to Pace when New York used the 46 defense).

10. Tennessee: Chance Warmack [G, Ala]
Warmack is this year's David DeCastro. Steve Hutchinson is on his last legs.

11. San Diego: Xavier Rhodes [CB, FSU]
Even if SD doesn't lose Quentin Jammer to free agency, the other cornerback is Antoine Cason. That's not good if you got Peyton Manning on your schedule twice.

12. Miami: Cordarrelle Patterson [WR, Ten]
In the Dolphins 3-WR offense, the only decent receiver is the slot guy (Davone Bess).

13. Tampa Bay: Eric Fisher [OT, CMU]
Donald Penn has been slipping, and maybe TB could move him to the right side to make room for Fisher.

14. Carolina: Sheldon Richardson [DT, Msr]
It's hard to make any defensive game plan work if you get gashed up the middle with the run. Richardson may help the bleak DT situation in Charlotte.

15. New Orleans: Johnthan Banks [CB, MspS]
As you know, the Saints score in bunches and also give up points in bunches. A Round 1 paycheck will allow Banks to afford the missing "a" in his first name.

16. St. Louis: Lane Johnson [OT, OU]
Perhaps Sam Bradford would be a little better if he can stay in the pocket a little longer.

17. Pittsburgh: John Jenkins [NT, Grg]
The last huge defensive tackle named Jenkins worked out well for the Panthers and Jets. Casey Hampton won't be back (and will probably retire).

18. Dallas: Sam Montgomery [DE, LSU]
Anthony Spencer, who was mostly a coverage guy who won't fit the new 4-3 defense, will probably be released.

19. New York Giants: Kenny Vaccaro [S, Tx]
Assuming the Giants stick with the big nickel (three safety) defense, the former Longhorn could start right away.

20. Chicago: Tyler Eifert [TE, ND]
In this mock, the Rams pull the rug from under the Bears by taking OT Lane Johnson. They are also desparate for a tight end, so they reach for Eifert.

21. Cincinnati: Keenan Allen [WR, Cal]
In a lap faller, the Bengals find a partner for A.J. Green.

22. St. Louis: Alec Ogletree [OLB, Grg]
Ogletree was a great blitzer as a 3-4 ILB, and is fast enough to blitz as an OLB in a 4-3. (James Laurinaitis is already inside.)

23. Minnesota: D.J. Fluker [OT, Ala]
Fluker is a right tackle only, but could be the next Willie Anderson or Lincoln Kennedy and could make an amazing tandem with Matt Kalil for many years. The Vikings haven't been happy with ROT Phil Loadholt.

24. Indianapolis: Kiki Mingo [ELB, LSU]
Dwight Freeney was misplaced in the 3-4 D and will not be re-signed.

25. Seattle: Jonathan Hankins [DT, OhS]
Alan Branch was a bust in Phoenix, and didn't get much better in Seattle. In the 4-3 under defense, Pete Carroll (for whatever technical reason) likes the NT (Brandon Mebane) to be smaller and the DT and "heavy" end (Red Bryant) to be big. Hankins fits the bill at DT.

26. Green Bay: Kawann Short [34E, Pur]
With Charles Woodson out of town, the Packers will probably play more 3-4 and save the 2-4 for passing downs. That means they need more D-lineman.

27. Houston: Desmond Trufant [CB, Wsh]
Marcus Trufant's brother may help with the Texans getting lit up by elite quarterbacks like Brees, Rodgers, and Brady have done to them the last couple of seasons.

28. Denver: Manti Te'o [ILB, ND]
Keith Brooking had a very good career, but is probably done. Manny is athletic with good size.

29. New England: Justin Hunter [WR, Ten]
Overrated WR Brandon Lloyd may be one and done in suburban Boston.

30. Atlanta: Tavon Austin [WR, WVU]
Geno Smith's favorite target played in the slot, and will be limited to the Y spot in the NFL. But in the Falcons 3-WR offense, that's still a starter. Austin is a small but fast Wes Welker type, and Harry Douglas is all hype.

31. San Francisco: Datone Jones [34E, UCLA]
At only 280 pounds, Jones can be a nickle DT until the aging and banged up Justin Smith hangs it up, which could be before 2014. But that's enough time for Jones to gain some weight at whatever pace he wants to before replacing Smith.

32. Baltimore: Barrett Jones [C, Ala]
Matt Birk might retire this offseason. If he doesn't, he has one year left. This pick could also be LSU ILB Kevin Minter if they lose Dannell Ellerbe in free agency.

51. Washington: Arthur Brown [ILB, KSU]
When you don't have a first round pick, you hope your first pick turns out to have first round talent. With London Fletcher being old (although still good) and the other starting ILB being Perry Riley, this is a big need for the Redskins.

The Chiefs do not want to move Albert to Guard. He has come out and said he isn't moving to Guard.

If you need to make things up in order to justify a pick, you're already behind.

I read that the Chiefs want to move Albert to guard. I don't make things up. If he had to say "I don't want to move to guard" like your post says, that means it was something they were thinking of doing.

Even though its not set in stone, it sounds like Birk will be back for one more year: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap100...kely-to-retire
Furthermore Ravens spend an early 4th round pick on Gino Gradkowski last year, planning to groom him as Birks successor.
Finally, even if we resign Ellerbee ILB is still a big need, since #52 is gone. Minter or Arthur Brown at #32, please.

This. Jones isn't really a good value at the end of the first round anyways.

I saw Gradkowski on the Ravens depth chart, but I wasn't sure if he was good enough to start or if he's there just to be a backup. A Ravens fan would know more that me.

I was thinking Jameel McClain (back from IR) would replace Ray, and Ellerbee would stay at the ILB/OLB spot (which I like to call "Larry") in their 4-3/3-4 combo defense.

Well, at least link so we can make fun of the source.

BTW...the fact that Albert had to say "I don't want to move to guard" doesn't mean the Chiefs were thinking of it, it means someone nitwit asked the question because some other nitwit speculated about moving him to guard. Move him to guard after he gave up a total of one sack last year. Genius!!!

Thanks for the source but it says "they at least have kicked around the idea of making him a guard." When did "kicked around" equate to "want to?"

Allen would be a sexy pick but I doubt the Bengals will take a WR in the 1st.

Gino has looked good in the limited playing time he's had. With as many other needs as the team has I don't think it would be smart spending a high pick on a position that already has somebody with the potential to take over.

As good as Ellerbe was for Baltimore this last season he struggles in space. That position is actually referred to as the WILL for the Ravens and it shares a lot of responsibilities that WLBs in a 4-3 scheme have. It is somewhat of a hybrid between ILB and OLB though. Ellerbe is better off in Lewis' former role. McClain is too and that's why the Ravens need somebody with some range if Ellerbe is re-signed. If he isn't they could go with any kind of ILB since McClain is coming off a late season spinal injury and he's not that good anyways.

uhm, where's Ziggy Ansah and why is he not the Giants pick at 19?
The Giants pass rush that was all over quarterbacks the last few years fell off in 2012, and Ziggy Ansah may be a good pick. There's always about 50 players that are supposed to be first rounders, so you have to leave somebody out. That will not be a problem for me when I post a five round mock later in the draft season. But I read that Ansah might drop (but of course there's still the Combine and BYU's pro day).

what a horrible steelers pick and a completely useless explanation that serves zero relevance to anything

the steelers have mcclendon, al woods, evander hood, and hebron fangupu...im confident that out of those 4, we will find a starter at NT once they stop giving hampton any and all snaps

Vaccaro, Mingo, Eifert, and Allen are all much better picks

but DE is such a bigger need than S and Ansah fits perfectly for us.

to say our pass rush fell off is an understatement. Osi's gone. Tuck's garbage. Ansah makes perfect sense

If you need to make things up in order to justify a pick, you're already behind.

Buc's won't take a OT that early, Dominick likes to get his Oline via Free Agency. Penn and Dotson are fine, if anything we draft a late round guy for depth.
Our Secondary and Pass Rush are pretty bad, we will go defense in the first round.

Vikes GM Rick Spielman is already on record saying he intends to re-sign Loadholt, no way Vikes go OT round 1.

While it's true that Mebane is the smaller DT, he only plays 1-tech because he played at 3-tech (and was smaller) a few years ago, before they signed Branch, and wasn't nearly as effective. Note that when he did play three tech, the Seahawks played the much bigger Colin Cole at the 1-tech spot. While Carroll prefers bigger DTs in general, he's not necessarily going to only use massive guys there.

As for the pick, the Seahawks are more in need of a pass rusher than a run stopper at DT. Hankins doesn't have the pass rushing ability to be a real three down starter and while he is a "space-eater", because the Seahawks don't blitz very often a space-eater isn't especially valuable to them.
